00:00These past few days, our hearts have all been broken again.
00:04An earthquake measuring 7.7 magnitude rocked Mbai, Nagekeo, NTT on August 15th.
00:13which was followed by a series of earthquakes, including a M5.8 earthquake right on the morning of our independence day,
00:21not just numbers on television.
00:23Before we discuss why our nature is so fragile,
00:26I want to invite all my friends to stop for a moment.
00:30Let us send our deepest prayers and condolences
00:34for our brothers and sisters in Manggarai, Nagekeo, Ende, Sika, and all of NTT.
00:40A total of 53 lives have been lost, and thousands of people have been forced to sleep in refugee tents.
00:46May those who have left get the best place in God's sight,
00:49and those who survive are given fortitude as wide as the ocean.
00:53In moments like these, as humans,
00:56we often ask,
00:57Why is the earth we stand on suddenly so angry?
01:07Imagine that the crust of the earth where we live is not one solid ball,
01:11but rather like a giant puzzle with cracks.
01:14These puzzle pieces are called tectonic plates.
01:18These puzzle pieces keep moving super slow,
01:20as fast as our nails grow.
01:22But sometimes, they get stuck, rub, and lock together.
01:27The pressure builds up over tens or hundreds of years,
01:30when the rocks are no longer strong enough to withstand the pressure.
01:34Snap!
01:34The key is broken.
01:36A huge energy is released in a matter of seconds.
01:39That's what we feel as an earthquake.
01:42So, what about the tsunami?
01:44Tsunami occurs when the puzzle fault is located on the seabed.
01:49Imagine pushing the bottom of the bathtub with your hands up very hard.
01:53The water above it will definitely rise.
01:56The water that is pushed up will form giant waves that sweep across the land.
02:00That is why the 7.7 magnitude earthquake in NTT yesterday triggered an early warning of a 1.6 meter tsunami on the coast of Flores.
02:10Then the question is,
02:11Why Indonesia?
02:13Why do we seem to be prone to disaster?
02:16The answer is geographical destiny.
02:18We cannot choose where our country is built.
02:21Indonesia happens to sit right on what scientists call the Ring of Fire.
02:29Not only that, we are like a house built right at the intersection of three of the busiest toll roads.
02:36Indonesia is the collision point of three of the world's giant plates.
02:40The Indo-Australian Plate from the south, the Eurasian Plate from the north, and the Pacific Plate from the east.
02:45In NTT itself, the activity of the Indo-Australian plate subducting under the Eurasian plate is the main engine that causes earthquakes there.
02:54This is the bitter fact, until now there is no technology on earth, even the most sophisticated AI, that can prevent
03:03the occurrence of an earthquake.
03:05We cannot stop the earth's plates from moving.
03:08But, we cannot prevent earthquakes as natural events occur.
03:13But we can prevent the impact from causing many casualties and severe damage.
03:18Earthquakes rarely kill people.
03:21What killed us was the building that collapsed on us.
03:24That's mitigation.
03:26First, build an earthquake-resistant house, either with the right concrete structure,
03:31or return to the local wisdom of traditional wooden houses that are flexible when shaken.
03:36Second, memorize the 20-20-20 formula for the coast.
03:41If the earthquake is felt for more than 20 seconds,
03:45we have about 20 minutes to run to a place that is at least 20 meters high.
03:51Third, don't wait for the sirin to sound.
03:53If the shaking is so strong that we have difficulty standing,
03:57make the shaking itself a natural alarm to immediately move away from the beach,
04:02as is directly done by our brothers and sisters in Labuan Bajo
04:06when the sea water receded shortly after the earthquake.
04:09At the end of the day, disasters like the one in NTT remind us of one thing,
04:15We are just guests on a very dynamic earth.
04:19Nature has its own cycle.
04:21Our task is not to challenge nature, but to learn to live in harmony with it.
04:26Educate ourselves, care for the environment, and prepare a disaster preparedness bag at home.
04:32Once again, big hugs and best wishes for the land of Flo Bhamora NTT.
04:37You are not alone.
04:39For friends who are watching, if you have extra money,
04:42Let's channel donations through official institutions to help them get back on their feet.
04:47Stay safe everyone.
