00:00Wawasan Information Chief Wan Ahmad Faisal, Wan Ahmad Kamal, is urging the government to explain
00:06how its proposed hybrid tax system, combining elements of the sales and service tax and goods
00:11and services tax, would work. In a statement, Wan Faisal argued that such a major policy shift
00:17should not be introduced through trial and error because of its potential impact on consumers and
00:22businesses. He called for details on the mechanism, tax rates, scope of goods and services,
00:28registration thresholds, and how input tax credits would be handled. Wan Faisal warned that small and
00:35medium enterprises were already facing rising costs and changes, such as e-invoicing, with another tax
00:41system potentially adding further compliance expenses. He urged the government to table an
00:46impact study and compliance cost assessment before announcing any new tax policy. Prime Minister Anwar
00:52Ibrahim said the government was studying a system combining elements of GST and SST to create a
00:59more progressive tax structure. Wan Faisal also questioned why GST elements were needed if the
01:05government considered SST a more targeted system. He stressed that businesses and consumers needed
01:11policy stability, rate certainty, and assurance that tax changes would not ultimately raise the cost of living.
