04:33lock down where every match is a cage match but every match has some variation on the rules that
04:37makes things still kind of interesting in their own way where every match is kind of a bubble
04:41but this one's every match is survivor series match and there's stories therein the full context of
04:46which i don't understand because i didn't grow up and watch during this time i i've done some
04:49some research for this for this review but i feel like just watching these matches kind of at a
04:54distance looking back in hindsight it's gonna be a little difficult for me so i'm gonna try my best
04:58to rate these as objectively as i can without totally like losing interest but i mean that
05:03was kind of the struggle that i had to deal with watching the show this next match is probably the
05:09most positively historic moment of this pay-per-view there is a very negatively historic moment later on
05:14which i'll get to but this is the million dollar team of ted dibiase rhythm and blues and a mystery
05:18partner versus the dream team of dusty rose coco beware and the heart foundation first of all what
05:24the hell was the deal with rhythm and blues did honky-tonk man really need a tag team partner and
05:28did they have to basically take greg valentine and dye his hair jet black i thought that was just a
05:32weird thing for greg to do it seems you know we're talking about things that are beneath people i
05:35thought this was kind of beneath greg valentine to also become an elvis impersonator it was like a
05:40parody of honky-tonk man who in and of itself was a parody although i do have to say i
05:44got to give
05:45him credit for doing the elvis lip a couple times that was pretty hilarious and speaking of weird
05:49what in the hell is going on with jim neidhart's hat i was so confused because when he first walked
05:52out
05:52oh my god was he bald this time and he had a weird lumpy head no he's just wearing this
05:56pink
05:57leather skull cap it was just such a weird look from jim neidhart always had like the strangest
06:02looks he had the parachute pants with the new foundation with owen hart he had the pink skull
06:07cap not good looks for jim neidhart dibiase brings out his mystery partner who of course is the
06:12undertaker making his wwf debut it's really one of those things kind of like a few weeks ago i reviewed
06:17bad blood 97 and when kane debuted it really could have gone either way with kane and just the same
06:22thing with the undertaker here a gimmick that just different from everything else going on at the
06:27time this was an out there gimmick in a culture that still had a lot of out there gimmicks this
06:32was
06:32the most out there and so it really could have gone it was a 50 50 it could have failed
06:37it could
06:37have succeeded of course we know it succeeded now and then just looking back at just the which of
06:42these things is not like the other you've got teddy biasi a couple of elvis impersonators
06:46and this zombie character the undertaker when i was becoming a fan for like for the first time
06:51in wrestling in like the late 90s and i thought the undertaker was awesome oh so cool undertaker
06:55and kane i love them both oh how'd the undertaker debut oh he was a mystery partner in the survivor
07:00series thing where he was like being paid by ted dibiase sounds like the least interesting debut for
07:05someone who had become one of the biggest stars in the history of the business so that really was a
07:10shock to me when i first learned about that i spoke earlier about you know trends in wrestling that are
07:15you know a bygone thing that don't really exist anymore as we know them here's another one like
07:18heel managers oh my god so many damn managers in this whole show but also this match in particular
07:23you have jimmy hart with rhythm and blues you've got virgil who's technically a manager with teddy
07:27biasi and you've got brother love now with the undertaker you have three managers on a four-person
07:32team that is a little much and i think just like the reason that you don't see a lot of
07:36managers
07:37anymore in especially in wve is because there is that possibility of so many managers together in one
07:42place or just like manager after manager after manager comes out i think every match on this show
07:48has manager involvement or at least a manager appearance at some point let's talk about taker's
07:52action in this match i think that's the big story as far as i'm concerned here of course he's a
07:56big
07:56dude but he's also very agile has a lot of interesting moves i've never really seen before
08:00at one point he takes down bret hart not with a choke slam but he's kind of like grabs him
08:04by the
08:04throat and then bret just takes a quick bump it's almost kind of like a sidewalk slam but without
08:09like grabbing the body and without the rotation same basic premise there he eliminates coco beware
08:13with the tombstone fairly early he just absorbs everyone's attacks didn't sell anything because
08:17that's his gimmick at the time he's the zombie man basically taker eliminates dusty roads with a
08:21axe handle from the top rope after he walked on the rope so it's the first time we see taker
08:25doing
08:26the rope walk thing then he gets eliminated via count out in a very weird and i think technically not
08:31not correct way because he he beats up dusty road and then taker's counted out oh he's the little
08:36man no he's not then bret rolls up valentine on a small package so it's down to he and dibiase
08:41they have good back and forth here really could go either way dibiase is kicking out a lot of bret
08:45stuff bret goes for a cross body ted rolls it into a pin and wins the match so ted dibiase
08:50is the sole
08:51survivor of his team and i forgot to mention the winners of all these matches will face off again in
08:56the main event of the battle of survivors so it has the potential to be a big old goulash of
09:00wrestlers
09:01who weren't part of the same team originally facing off in the main event i give this one two and
09:05a
09:05half stars probably my favorite survivor for my favorite match of this card uh because they're
09:10all survivor series matches so it's kind of hard to compare them i think what really sets it uh over
09:14the edge for me is the fact that it's taker's debut it's very historical there and also the work that
09:19you know bret and dibiase do as well something i really appreciate up next the vipers jake roberts
09:24jimmy snooker and the rockers take on the visionaries of rick the model martel warlord and power and glory
09:30of course the real story with this match is you've got jake and you've got rick martel
09:33who really rick does everything he can to avoid jake in this matchup because it was a little bit
09:37before this where jake was blinded by rick martel's arrogance perfume and you can see jake's really
09:43selling the blindness too because he even got a white contact lens in that eye to sell the vision
09:48impairment also i love this i don't know i'm sure this is this has to be intentional this cannot be
09:53a coincidence the fact the heel team was called the visionaries i imagine that they were named that
09:57to take a dig at jake roberts like haha we have vision and you don't ah classic heel heat also
10:02look at the
10:03the team the vipers jake roberts jimmy snooker and the rockers think of all the drugs those four had
10:07on them at one time in that one moment that locker room must have been a fun place to be
10:11uh snooker
10:12by the way is 47 years old here he's i think the oldest guy by far in this match he
10:16looks amazing for
10:17his age too the first elimination is marty janetti warlord eliminates him after marty goes to the well
10:21too many times with the high flying moves martel eliminates snooker in the exact same manner
10:26that dibiase beat brett in the finish of the previous match so i thought the timing of that was a
10:31little
10:31uh too close together
10:38so it's down to jake roberts all by himself four on one jake tries to violently fight back he does
10:43hit warlord with the ddt well that's going on the referee is distracted martel tries to to spray the
10:48the arrogance in jake's eyes again but he get they say he gets out of the way but i think
10:52he took
10:52pretty much all that he just didn't sell this time so then uh roberts pulls out damien the snake so
10:57he
10:57chases martel out of the ring with the snake jake gets counted out so the visionaries with the
11:01clean sweep the flawless victory uh gorilla monsoon says on commentary it's the first time in survivor
11:06series history that a team has won a match with all four members of the team still in place still
11:11intact i'm going to give this match two stars i like the story being told here of jake really
11:15trying to fight and get his hands on rick martel he doesn't quite do it and the valiant fighting back
11:19despite the odds being so insurmountable uh really good stuff here so i give them much i give this match
11:23two
11:24stars backstage we see hulk hogan's team cutting a promo and i just realized watching this promo here
11:30how have i not noticed this before that when you see his body and the way he's moving around it
11:34looks
11:34like he's doing the pp dance he's doing a promo he really has to go now that the whole world
11:38is in a
11:39state of confusion and especially that wwf is turning topsy-turvy up next the hulkamaniacs hulk hogan
11:45tugboat big boss man and jim duggan taking on the natural disasters earthquake dino bravo haku and
11:51the barbarian this of course was one small part of the large feud that hogan and quake were on for
11:56several months here hogan would eventually win that feud with some stretcher matches then go on
12:00to face sergeant slaughter the next year for the championship at wrestlemania 7 interesting that
12:05the heel name here is the natural disasters then it would be later repurposed as a tag team name
12:10once tugboat uh turned heel and joint earthquake became typhoon also haku was a last minute replacement
12:16for rick rude in storyline they said rude was suspended for insulting big boss man's mother which
12:21is kind of a silly reason to suspend somebody in wrestling but it turns out in real life is because
12:25rude left the company and so they need a replacement also very interesting kind of callback because if
12:30you consider what boss man did later in his career like 98 tormenting the big show over his dying father
12:35and then later his dead father so oh my god maybe boss man was so traumatized by rick rude making
12:41fun of
12:41his own mother that he snapped and now he wants to take that aggression out on other people i've never
12:45seen
12:45boss man as much as a babyface before so looking back at this era and seeing boss man who's still
12:49like
12:49very agile for some of his size like doing the stuff he was doing and getting so over with the
12:53fans like
12:54man it's too bad that hogan had such a stranglehold and warrior has such a stranglehold in the company
12:58as far as top babyfaces go i think boss man i think he could have had a real good run
13:02as a
13:03maybe not maybe not may have ventured so much or as a champ world champion the fact he never won
13:06an intercontinental championship even though he fought for it a lot i thought was very interesting
13:10the fact he never really won a championship in that first run douggan gets disqualified in a very
13:15weird wonky way it's down to hogan and barbarian hogan's the winner he's the sole survivor for
13:20his team he moves on to the grand finale in the main event i give this one one star this
13:25i think
13:25was by far like the least interesting of all the survivor series matchups i think it had like the
13:31people who are the most the biggest guys the slowest guys the most plotting guys uh haku really
13:36didn't get a whole lot in this he was only in the match for like i don't know a minute
13:39or two like
13:39he didn't get a whole lot offense in so if haku stayed in the whole thing that might have been
13:43interesting but uh he was the first one gone and it was just a bunch of people who are you
13:47know when
13:47you compare to the people who you had in previous matches like deviasi and brett hart and sean
13:51michaels and marty jennetti and all these really cool people and you know greg valentine all these
13:55good guys and undertaker what he would eventually become then you've got like all this and it's like
13:59nah this match didn't really do it for me me and gene oakland interviews the macho candy striper
14:03randy savage not much to say in particular about this promo savage does call out ultimate warrior
14:07for a championship match sometime in the future he will eventually cost warrior the title at the royal
14:12rumble and sergeant slaughter will beat warrior for the title and then savage and warrior will face
14:17off at wrestlemania 7 so that's savage's contribution to this up next the alliance of
14:21nikolai volkoff tito santana and the bushwhackers versus the mercenaries sergeant slaughter boris
14:27zukov and the orient express the heels are coming out with you know the camo face paint sergeant
14:33slaughter had just turned heel doing the old iraqi sympathizer gimmick he's got general adnan with
14:38him and then slaughter before the match cuts a very drawn out promo against the troops
14:54this promo went on forever and i was getting so sick of it like that then again that delivery i
15:00mean
15:00it did the job because it went on forever i wanted him to shut the hell up so badly so
15:05he was doing his
15:06job i guess zukov and the orient express are eliminated pretty much immediately like in the
15:10first three minutes of this matchup they're all gone so slaughter's by himself and at first you
15:13think oh slaughter's gonna go pretty soon too because it's four on one and they're gonna you
15:17know yay america how dare you insult the troops but no slaughter holds his own and eliminates you
15:21know volkoff butch and luke all by himself oh but also by the way what the hell i mean i
15:25i missed
15:26the point in which volkoff went from singing the russian national anthem to going yay usa waving the flag
15:31what's going on oh wrestling so it's down eventually to the future awf superstars tito santana and sergeant
15:37slaughter they have a bit of a fight back and forth going on slaughter shoves tito into the
15:41referee causes a rev bump tito hits the flying forearm he's got the match one but while the
15:45referee is down general adnan comes in hits tito with the iraqi flag slaughter puts him in the camel
15:50clutch you think that the oh my god the heels are gonna walk away with they're gonna steal this one
15:53but the referee apparently while he's selling he sees what's going on it's right this field of vision
15:58folks i mean then he disqualifies slaughter and tito wins the match so after all that work of
16:02slaughter work it all by himself and eventually he screws himself over in the end due to his cheating
16:07ways catching up to him i'm gonna give this match one and a half stars so remember how i said
16:13that the
16:13undertaker's debut was the most historically positive moment of this show now it's time for the opposite
16:18end of this we go to gene oakland presenting the gobbledygooker they look at the egg the egg hatches
16:23out comes hector guerrero in a turkey suit the fans crap all over it you know how this goes
16:27if you want more detail about this whole segment just go to my worst debuts countdown uh spoiler
16:32alert he's number one and the one thing i thought was interesting about this the whole point of you
16:36know being a booker or a promoter anything you do the whole goal of it is to make money to
16:41draw fans
16:42so where is the money where is the audience appeal in the gobbledygooker what about him
16:47makes people oh my god kids and families are going to come from miles around to see this guy jumping
16:53around the ring in a turkey suit because this goes on forever after he gets out of the egg he
16:58and
16:58oakland do this whole song and dance schtick for it feels like it might as well have been 20 minutes
17:02it's more like five but it felt like it went a lot longer i'm just oakland trying to copy the
17:07the
17:07gooker who's doing all these acrobatic things and and just all these prat balls and stuff really
17:11oakland i think was kind of the saving grace of the segment because he had a few funny one-liners
17:15talking about the gooker and then like some of his you know face plants were pretty funny too
17:19and you know god bless piper he's doing his danos to put this thing over saying oh the kids are
17:23loving it and they're not loving it like you see some shots of the fans dancing and stuff i think
17:27they're doing it just out of desperation please if we dance then maybe they'll wrap this thing up
17:32faster we can we can all go home sooner so we have our main event the match of survival the
17:36all
17:37remaining winners from the previous matchups yeah hulk hogan ultimate warrior and tito santana
17:41taking on ted dibiase and all of the visionaries rick martel warlord and power and glory very interesting
17:47the way these teams were seated do you all the faces and all the heels are in their own respective
17:51teams funny how that works out so yeah it's three on five tito pins the warlord instantly so it becomes
17:56a four on three thing then dibiase pins tito after dropping in the throat first onto the top rope
18:00nice knowing you tito but we all know where the focus this is going on it ain't you tito sorry
18:04you
18:05have to wait a few years when you go to awf to get your time your time in the sunlight
18:08so it's down
18:08to hogan and warrior taking on the rest of the heels power and glory hit hogan with their double team
18:13finisher the same one that took out sean michaels earlier the night but hogan totally no sells it
18:17he eliminates roma all by himself then hogan hits martel with like a really bad looking clothesline
18:21but really hogan never should have thrown it because of the way that martel was hitting the
18:24ropes i guess he was just trying to like get him to clothesline out of the ring but it was
18:28very sloppy
18:28so martel just takes this really awkward bump out of the ring and he runs away he abandons his team
18:33so martel is counted out so it's down to two on two and from this point everything just falls apart
18:37in rapid succession for the heels hogan eliminates dibiase with the hogan special big boot leg drop of
18:42course then like a second later he power slams hercules who's the last man on the heel team
18:47hogan tags in warrior and he does his whole song and dance where he runs off the ropes
18:50and splashes him warrior eliminates hercules each of the top baby faces gets a chance to shine
18:55and that's the whole thing one and a half stars is probably the best i can give this match and
18:59i know
18:59the the match ratings for this show they don't go very far it's like one mat one star to two
19:04stars
19:05and there's not a lot of variation in between again i think it's just the way these matches are paced
19:09and the way the fact that it's all survivor series matchups so it's like there's none that are there's
19:14nothing really stand out there's none except like i said for the one with a million dollar team and
19:18dream team not a whole lot of things that make these matches stand out as this as me this kind
19:23of like neutral observer watching many years later so there you go yeah hogan and warrior posing with
19:28each other and they're celebrating together at one point like one of the last things you see is the
19:31camera looking way up right in the crotches and the buttoxes of the of hogan and warrior and just
19:38so ridiculous shot you couldn't have backed out just like three feet cameraman that was a little
19:42much so that that's the show hogan and warrior stand tall so my final grade for survivor series
19:461990 is going to be a c plus like i said kind of hard to really fairly grade these matches
19:53when
19:53they're all so similar so every match had the same variation of like some guy gets dq'd somebody gets
19:58counted out some wonky stuff happens where people get eliminated in ways they don't i love the fact
20:02that you'd see people get disqualified or counted out and they always get surprised when they got
20:06eliminated like what oh my why am i getting disqualified like everyone had that reaction
20:10who got dq'd i thought it was hilarious there were no real bad matches on this card like nothing was
20:14a stinker i don't think there were any survivor series matches that i hated really the one negative
20:18part about this whole show was gobbledygooker's debut you can't really blame that on the other
20:22wrestlers uh you can't really blame them on the gooker either he's working with what he's got
20:25but yeah there weren't a whole lot of great matches either so really this one's kind of a middle
20:29of the road uh show it's known for two big things taker's debut and the gobbledygooker and that's
20:35pretty much it and really everything i've read some things was like a taker could have been the
20:39guy in the egg imagine again could have failed could have succeeded you know it's one of those
20:4350 50 things you just never know in professional wrestling so thanks once again to josh fitler for
