22:07because like i remember sitting in front of like the fat ps2 and like just being so immersed in the

22:19i i remember because i was older at that point so i remember how much more
22:25i remember much more of my experience with it um and feeling it and seeing it all for the first
22:32time
22:32and feeling more more obviously emotional because i at that point loved the franchise
22:40so when kingdom hearts 3 came out i was so excited but i was a bit disappointed with like the
22:44story
22:44and like the kind of over the top um fighting like to the point where it wasn't enjoyable
22:50like it was almost silly um and i missed that little
22:54it's the darkness of the second a bit more
23:00yeah sora will retent will sora will return in avengers doomsday
23:06body shaming the ps2 the fat one was the best one i'm not shaming nothing i'm hyping it up if
23:12anything they literally call it the fat one
23:16blew my mind blew my mind man uh was there a particular disney world or character that you
23:23three had the most fun creating and breathing new life into tell us give us a hint give us a
23:29hint
23:31of course of course of course i was really disappointed with the frozen world there's
23:35like two levels in it exciting areas for me personally um on kingdom hearts 4 is the world
23:40of skull out kylem so you get to finally play with mickey so that's yeah that's very big for us
23:45oh okay that's that's some good information
23:50you get to play with mickey and you jump into a book
23:52oh well we saw that it looked cool
23:55in this paper sort of world
23:56it almost reminded me of alice in wonderland of one
24:01create like paper thin mickeys um giant mickeys um tiny mickeys and box mickeys and um when you
24:08when you're a paper thin mickey you go through the cracks in the walls for example if you throw
24:12him he becomes an airplane and paper airplane you fly around that's so cool and by using these utilizing
24:18these special abilities of these copies of origami mickey who brought their baby you could solve
24:22puzzles it's a disney showcase what am i talking about of course you can bring a baby
24:25design that's very different from um sora's adventure and i think it's yeah it's really refreshing
24:30and interesting i think you'll enjoy it at all i enjoyed it very much
24:38no that was great i loved all that information that's so cool
24:41all the worlds are always genuinely fun to work with for for different reasons
24:46but if i had to choose um with a toy story um yes i recently played final fantasy 10
24:52and 10 2 um but digital so i was gonna get like a physical
24:57come up with a completely original story um that took place after the events of the first film
25:02that baby shut it up to be able to put a muzzle on it we're talking about kingdom heart sports
25:09it's a huge deal that bay will forever be remembered in this panel
25:14are always really fun in the bod um like hercules for example or um hercules
25:21those are always timeless stories and characters that um really love and so being able to keep them
25:28relevant olympus was my favorite um that and the tangle world were my favorites in kingdom hearts
25:38somebody said fortnite world oh no fortnite please stop stop letting them taint everything
25:50i do have my muscles do you i'm so glad we all do we all got some muscles
26:00people are saying keep marvel out of kingdom hearts please
26:03sora car i love how some of these are just like the most deranged like
26:10comments i've ever seen like they don't think before they type and it's funny
26:17i love that hades is in it he's one of my favorites of course fortnite stay away
26:27really did you like it better than 10 though tom this is very important
26:34quiet danny stop it you're watching the showcase with me i'm gonna i'm gonna label you a fan too now
26:41danny is the biggest kingdom hearts fan i've ever seen in my life actually it puts me to shame
26:46you know as shown a little bit in the trailer just now um i do feel as though we were
26:50able to
26:50create some especially entertaining interactions between for example donald and goofy and hades
26:55um and maleficent also plays a very important role in the story so i hope you look forward to her
27:00wait she's in it
27:03wait maleficent i didn't see her in the trailer she's in it
27:08i love that you each have a different feeling for every world and every character for me
27:13agrabah was so cool to see because agrabah was a very cool level to see it in kingdom hearts
27:18dream come true uh that was a good one always found fascinating are the worlds that are inspired
27:24by disney so what was it like creating these unique worlds like the mysterious tower and disneytown
27:31which aren't directly represented in film ty yeah so i guess um disneytown um wasn't based on a
27:38specific film but um it was built around the feeling of disneyland and toontown we really love disneyland
27:44a lot so yeah so really wanted to capture uh the sense of excitement oh you wanted to skip cut
27:49scenes i watched all of them but it builds the emotional um the things of the park so component to
27:57it you know it gets you a little bit more attached being forced to watch the cut scenes in my
28:01opinion
28:04it just didn't grab me like oh you feel like that danny i feel honestly i think i i liked
28:1210 more than
28:15yeah i think i think i like 10 more to be fair i felt like it was just a bit
28:20more emotional
28:21and you get a lot of reward and yuna felt so different um they also filled the world with
28:26classic disney characters we really love the classic characters and like course danny what do you mean
28:31you're supposed to watch the cut scenes you're killing me i'm gonna get you a game that has only
28:36unskippable cut scenes it's all cut scenes it's just a movie i'm just gonna make you watch a movie
28:42because it's so special yeah with disneytown it really wasn't about just creating a location
28:49right it was about creating that feeling and then so you know like like ty was ty was talking about
28:54we really encourage the team to atlantis imagine if atlantis was in kingdom hearts
29:02oh my god please show us more world please i need it
29:08yes so i i like the story much more
29:13and it hit a lot deeper i think especially with like how it ended up with sin and stuff like
29:19so good i just feel like it definitely it the team came up with just it caught it caught me
29:25up
29:25in the story a lot more
29:28really enrich this world while still maintaining the core identity um and it was really
29:34present evil 3 yeah
29:36it really empowered the creativity it kind of offered a framework for the artist to to explore
29:42while i'm still sort of maintaining that the experience stays undeniably disney
29:56like i'm happy they're talking about it
29:58but but i want information
30:11so imagining something new the incredibles i don't know how i feel about the incredibles
30:17is something that's very funny did my story even post one second
30:21in some ways less daunting because there's no expectation of having to replicate something
30:25exactly as it is
30:28okay
30:42moana world i feel like that's a given to be honest i feel like that will definitely happen
30:47but it's not one that i would personally be like looking forward to
31:07release date i don't think that was given was it wait where are we uh get them clear obscure
31:13though yeah clear obscure oh i still need to finish that i think i might do it in my free
31:18time i don't
31:18know i couldn't skip that one level and it drove me crazy show thanks for following
31:24favorite final fantasy 10 character or on or on i think is my second favorite
31:30difficulties i think it was riku or
31:34i also like lulu but lulu i feel like she didn't have too much
31:39she was more of like a background like although she was part of the main crew she just felt more
31:43like
31:44she wasn't as focused on but i like riku's like energy you know
31:49one of the most compelling parts about kingdom hearts but or on i think is like my second favorite
31:53but i also like titus so it's like it's i don't know it's tied they're all like different levels
31:58but in for different reasons they're on i don't know i like them all for different reasons
32:03in the disney and pixar worlds you're on the last act i think i was on the second or third
32:13which is um inspired by tokyo she was more mom for sure
32:18um we really committed to creating yeah tokyo being in it was very cool
32:22and so we actually recreated all the city i need to see what the treat stream was
32:27walking around tokyo taking pictures um because we really wanted all the buildings and lighting
32:31the patterns on the roads for example to be exactly like tokyo um i actually wore a dorky headband
32:37and running shoes and i was running around tokyo and everyone thought it was weird whenever this
32:40gets released i'll you don't have to do that because i what i'm gonna do is i'm probably gonna
32:44do a digital copy to like um to play for stream but then i'm also gonna get a physical just
32:50because it's so sentimental to me i should i should have gotten a physical copy for kingdom
32:55hearts 3 but i just didn't because it's a huge sort of city one of the most because now i'm
32:59gonna
32:59have like a sealed collection because i have one i have two i have chain of memories sealed
33:03and then i'm gonna do three and four when i can just so i can it's my favorite series so
33:07i want to
33:07like have it you know i've kind of gotten into collecting recently you could slide down the
33:13power lines in tokyo you could twirl around um poles and signboards and so it's very realistically
33:18tokyo but you can also do all these dynamics um actions you lost your save card i'm so sorry warden
33:26hey holocron um i don't know i feel so bad because like i have a bike i've gotten really
33:33big into final fantasy in my free time as well so i might be like throwing stuff on there too
33:37i don't want to you know push it it's not going to be the same when physical discs stop selling
33:45that's that's exactly why i'm kind of like maybe i should collect the things that i like
33:49um while when physical discs stop existing
33:59did you really i didn't do anything with the gummy um ship builder because i didn't understand it
34:05i just was like i just want to get to the next planet

34:37certain ideas that you know i'm not able to i feel it's difficult to realize or you know
34:42certain ideas that i really can't compromise on uh and so between the team and i we're you
34:47know always trying to constantly push ourselves to find that balance
34:50somebody goes spider sora
34:52i feel like zootopia is going to be in zootopia is a good point
35:03that baby still shrieking
35:05it's like it's being squeezed what are these sounds coming out of him
35:12somebody goes just answer if roxas will crack nomine

35:36whose baby is that the baby everybody talking about the damn baby
35:44so yeah and you know this applies for a coco as well uh you know that was a world that
35:49um

35:53which is very different
35:54they're wild
35:55or you know the circumstances that he found himself in the past
35:57um and so we try to always pick our world uh based with that kind of theme in mind and
36:03that's
36:04really always the forefront of our approach
36:05okay
36:06uh and in order to ensure that you know the story still uh feels cohesive um and you know continuous
36:12as a whole
36:12um you know i work very very closely
36:15very
36:16incredibles would be pretty good actually
36:18within my team
36:19uh even before
36:20because they just like have their own powers and stuff
36:22lots of discussions
36:23the baby will return in avengers doomsday
36:36one final question
36:38why do you think the story of kingdom hearts has transcended generations
36:42and has continuously grown in popularity over the years
36:46and how does it feel preparing for
36:49is this gonna be the end it's only like a 30 minute panel
36:52yeah no wow you know
36:53let me look up how long this panel's gonna be
36:55coming up to the 25th anniversary
36:57but but honestly it's really thanks to to all of you you know fans out there
37:01who have really supported us and been with us through this incredible journey
37:06so thank you so much for that
37:07um i think one of the reasons why um the franchise continues to
37:12okay one hour
37:13one hour
37:14generations is the um
37:16i want them to stay all night
37:17they need to be here
37:18of friendship you know loss and and hope
37:21these are all themes that everybody can relate to
37:24and really this this fusion of nomura-san's amazing storytelling
37:28and disney's um timeless stories and characters
37:31is just truly magical
37:33and brings all of these really important themes together
37:36and and another thing is is the the connections that fans share with each other
37:42i think is really special and just vital in keeping the franchise alive
37:46i i think you know many of us who have played the first game are now adults
37:50and have been sharing the passions and experiences with with friends and family
37:55in some cases they're their children over the years
37:58and that's precisely the kind of things that ensures that kingdom hearts franchise
38:02this one guy with the phone down here just like zooming in on this lady
38:06we're so very grateful for that

45:38You wear a few different hats on Kingdom Hearts.
45:40You're one of the main voice directors,
45:42but you're also the lead English dialogue editor.
45:44So you're part of shaping the script through several rounds
45:48with Square Enix, Disney, and sometimes the filmmakers.
45:51Once you receive the Japanese audio and animation,
45:54how do you prepare the script for recording?
45:58Painstakingly so.
46:00I go through every line, every reaction.
46:03So we're not going to get more information now.
46:07Even with a beard, he's a babyface.
46:09He is.
46:11Would it be bad if I didn't pay as much attention?
46:13No, because there's no way they can give us any insight.
46:17They're just like, not that they're just,
46:19but they're part of the talent.
46:23They're not the directors.
46:24So they will definitely not be able to give us the information that I want.

47:51He is the Mickey we all know in love from all of Mickey-dom.

48:14The script changes in the room so much because of what these guys bring to it.

48:27And that's just to capture all they are bringing
48:30because they know these characters so well.
48:34And then there's I want to be open to surprises.

48:38I can't tell you how many times Jim Cummings has made a Pete line
48:42a thousand times funnier with an improvisation
48:46that totally fits the moment,
48:48but none of us could have anticipated.
48:51And then with the characters...
48:52I'm low-key thinking about going and getting a snack

49:39I found this incredible true fact about you guys
49:42that despite playing Sora and Riku for nearly 25 years,
49:47you guys have never actually recorded together ever.
49:51Is that right?
49:52Really?
49:54It's one of the crazy aspects of voice recording.
49:57I think in all the voice recording jobs I've ever done,
49:59rarely have.
50:00I think Hey Arnold was the only time I've ever been in the same room
50:04with the other actors.
50:05Really?
50:08I hear the Sora cadence.
50:11Okay, yeah.
50:12I'm not going to hear more of this.
50:14I mean, it's not going to be more information.

50:42and it's been a journey.

50:51A colleague of mine who worked a ton on the first two games,
50:55his wife made this beautiful scrapbook after Kingdom Hearts 1.

51:28What comes to mind when you look at those photos?
51:30You know, making the first Kingdom Hearts.
51:32For fans who have never seen how the game is recorded,
51:36you know, what was the experience like from your side?
51:38What do you remember?
51:39Were there anything new surprising about it
51:42as the process was going on?
51:43I had done a lot of Disney voiceover jobs
51:46before Kingdom Hearts,
51:47but taking this on was a completely different animal
51:50because I'd never recorded over dialogue in another language.
51:54That's our big challenge is, as Renee mentioned,
51:57getting the right spaces and the right lengths,
52:00but also conveying the same meaning
52:01and matching the gestures that he does,
52:03sometimes really big gestures.
52:05And it's been such a delight
52:08to learn how to do this over 25 years.
52:12And now it's like a really specific skill that I have
52:16and that we have as a team together
52:18that I'm really proud of.
52:19I also am confronted daily
52:22with how high my voice was back then.
52:24Yeah.
52:25And that's another challenge of the job
52:27is that Sora's just a little bit younger than me.
52:30And so I'm unable to use about 70% of my natural register
52:38and you have to try and find ways to have variety
52:40and expressiveness using a very limited part
52:43of like the top part of your voice.
52:44Because another fun thing is,
52:46and you might see this at some point,
52:49doing the really young me,
52:51the way that it has,
52:52the shape has to happen inside my head,
52:53it kind of feels like my eyes are popping out of my head
52:56when I'm doing it.
52:56So that's an interesting part of it too.
52:59I look forward to seeing the BTS on that one.

53:06for me, it really represents
53:07like two really special milestones.
