00:00:35The End
00:01:12The Treasury Department is your symbol of service and protection
00:01:16and has been since 1789.
00:01:19Its responsibilities are great and its duties far-reaching.
00:01:23Through its many subdivisions, it comes in direct and personal contact with every United States citizen.
00:01:30The Treasury Department maintains the oldest United States naval service, the Coast Guard.
00:01:39It controls merchandise crossing our borders and prevents smuggling.
00:01:51It is responsible for the collection of internal revenue.
00:02:00Enforces federal narcotic laws.
00:02:06Suppresses counterfeiting.
00:02:13And finally, engraves and prints the money you use.
00:02:21The making of paper money requires the precise skill of individual artists and steel engravers.
00:02:27No one employee engraves a complete design.
00:02:34All the separate engravings are eventually combined to form one composite design
00:02:38from which is prepared the multiple plate used in the actual printing.
00:02:43Here, still another specialist is involved.
00:02:46The printer.
00:02:47Expertly polishing the plate with the palms of his hands
00:02:49so the clear, sharp images will result.
00:02:56The sheets of banknotes pass through trained fingers and under-practiced eyes
00:03:00as one complicated process after another
00:03:03sends them on their way to final completion.
00:03:06If a counterfeiter were to duplicate exactly a United States banknote,
00:03:11he would have to possess not only the combined skills of a great many artists,
00:03:15but all the elaborate equipment as well.
00:03:18For there is no question that each individual note made here
00:03:22represents the finest example of the engraver's art.
00:03:29Yet counterfeiters have been trying to duplicate U.S. currency
00:03:32from revolutionary days right on up.
00:03:35These are counterfeit notes picked up by the Secret Service during the past 85 years.
00:03:40Despite the fact that each can be detected as counterfeit by careful and alert citizens,
00:03:44thousands of people are needlessly victimized every year.
00:03:48Mostly the general public, small merchants, neighborhood trade people.
00:03:56Well, Mrs. Flaherty, how's business?
00:03:58It's good at noon. We got a nice crowd.
00:04:00Our dinner trade's awful slow, though.
00:04:02It'll pick up.
00:04:03Of course it will.
00:04:04If I do say so myself, we set a fine table.
00:04:07You ought to come over sometime.
00:04:09I will. Next week, maybe.
00:04:11Excuse me.
00:04:13Fred.
00:04:21That's one of them, all right.
00:04:24Is there something wrong?
00:04:25Mrs. Flaherty, do you remember where you got that bill?
00:04:27The 20th.
00:04:28Mm-hmm.
00:04:29Around noon.
00:04:30The rush hour.
00:04:31I was very busy.
00:04:32It was a young, dark fellow with a mustache.
00:04:35It's good, isn't it?
00:04:37It's good counterfeit.
00:04:38Counterfeit?
00:04:39You should watch these things, especially in a bill of this size.
00:04:42I've got to turn this into the Secret Service.
00:04:44I can have it back, can't I?
00:04:45Afraid not.
00:04:46You're just out $20.
00:04:48But I can't afford it.
00:04:49I don't see how they can expect me to take this loss.
00:04:52People who handle money have to learn to spot the bed when they see it.
00:04:55It's their only protection.
00:04:57I'm off this side.
00:05:07Mrs. Flaherty's bill was sent to the Secret Service Laboratory in Washington.
00:05:11Here, counterfeit bills are analyzed for distinctive characteristics.
00:05:15Mrs. Flaherty's bill, it turned out, has some very distinctive and rather familiar characteristics.
00:05:33Remember this note, Chief?
00:05:36Yes.
00:05:37The old Stuart note.
00:05:39Oh, no.
00:05:40Don't tell me this has come out every time.
00:05:42After three years.
00:05:43New crop, too.
00:05:45A million of these phonies floating around isn't exactly a happy idea, is it?
00:05:48It's fresh, all right.
00:05:49Almost perfect.
00:05:50Think Stuart would know about this?
00:05:52He might.
00:05:53But he didn't have the plates.
00:05:55We knew that when he took the rap.
00:05:58That case was a heartbreaker.
00:06:00It'd break your heart again if they fled the country with this stuff.
00:06:03Why don't you drop in on him?
00:06:04He might talk.
00:06:05His address is still Atlanta.
00:06:07Why not?
00:06:08We haven't any choice.
00:06:18Stuart hasn't got such a bad record here, has he?
00:06:20It's very good.
00:06:21Model prisoner.
00:06:22He's too sharp to make any small rules.
00:06:25I'll talk to him now.
00:06:29Bring Stuart in.
00:06:30Yes, sir.
00:06:32You got another seven years to go?
00:06:34It'll be cut to four and a half with his good time.
00:06:45That's all, guard.
00:06:46Yes, sir.
00:06:47Stuart, this is Mr. Raymond of the United States Secret Service.
00:06:52You don't seem very glad to see me.
00:06:55Sit down.
00:06:55Mr. Raymond wants to talk to you.
00:07:03Familiar?
00:07:05What do I do with money in here?
00:07:07Look at it.
00:07:09$20 bill.
00:07:10A couple of bets at the $10 window.
00:07:12A tip to the cigarette girl.
00:07:14Ah, Stuart.
00:07:15Don't snub an old friend.
00:07:17At the time of your arrest, you had $50,000 worth of those 20s old phony in your possession.
00:07:23I did?
00:07:23Just because you got caught, don't get sore at the money.
00:07:27Oh, I'm not sure.
00:07:28Okay, it so happens that we are.
00:07:30The bills are popping up again, mostly out west.
00:07:32Frisco, Reno, Vegas, and L.A.
00:07:33I'm amazed.
00:07:34I don't think so.
00:07:35Come again.
00:07:36You figure I've been floating about the window.
00:07:39Don't kid with me.
00:07:40You know what I mean.
00:07:41Somebody's got those plates and is circulating the money.
00:07:43You might know who that somebody is.
00:07:45No, I don't get around much socially anymore.
00:07:48Stuart, you've got seven more years to go.
00:07:50A little cooperation might cut that down.
00:07:53Might even get you a recommendation for an early parole.
00:07:56Stool pigeons don't live long, Mr. Ray.
00:07:58I don't expect you to be a stool pigeon.
00:08:00I'm asking you to be loyal to yourself.
00:08:02To think of your own welfare.
00:08:04Your mob's in action again, but what are they doing for you?
00:08:07Nothing.
00:08:08What are you doing for them?
00:08:10Seven more years.
00:08:15Who's printing that counterfeit money?
00:08:17I didn't know then, I don't know now.
00:08:19Who was your contact man?
00:08:21He was a guy named, uh, Joe.
00:08:24He always wore dark glasses and had his, uh, hat clamped low over his face.
00:08:28If he had a face, I never saw it.
00:08:30Gee, I guess I really couldn't tell you what he looked like.
00:08:32Is that all you have to tell me?
00:08:34That's all.
00:08:37Stuart, I guess I owe you an apology for interrupting your routine in the prison and dragging you into the
00:08:41warden's office.
00:08:42I misjudged you completely.
00:08:43You must really like it here.
00:08:45Like it well enough to consider it home sweet home for the next seven years.
00:08:49All right, warden.
00:08:51Think of the next seven years, Stuart, and try to refresh your memory.
00:08:55All right, guard.
00:09:01What do you think?
00:09:03Oh, I think he'll come around.
00:09:14Some weeks later, on a federal district court order, Chris Stewart was being transferred to Kansas City in the custody
00:09:20of the United States Deputy Marshal.
00:09:23No rest for the wicked.
00:09:26I'm doing all right.
00:09:31Do you mind raising your flipper?
00:09:35You're in central time now.
00:09:38Gained an hour.
00:09:39Yeah?
00:09:40I can sure use it.
00:09:45You're in central time now.
00:09:46You're in central time now.
00:09:51You're in central time now.
00:09:55You're in central time now.
00:09:58You're in central time now.
00:09:59You're in central time now.
00:09:59You're in central time now.
00:10:00You're in central time now.
00:10:01You're in central time now.
00:10:01You're in central time now.
00:10:01You're in central time now.
00:10:01You're in central time now.
00:10:02You're in central time now.
00:10:02You're in central time now.
00:10:02You're in central time now.
00:10:03You're in central time now.
00:10:03You're in central time now.
00:10:04You're in central time now.
00:10:08You're in central time now.
00:10:21All right, unlock the jewelry.
00:10:31Get up.
00:10:33Get up.
00:10:49Pull her up and stop.
00:10:52Go easy on those brakes.
00:11:15What are you waiting for?
00:11:15Open the door.
00:11:39The gun's empty.
00:11:43Hand it over.
00:11:45Come on, give me.
00:11:47Afraid I'm going to hit myself?
00:11:48There's anybody that looks sideways at you, Stuart.
00:11:51No, not this trip.
00:11:52I do what I'm told.
00:11:55Now, Marshal and me, sure put on a good act in that bus.
00:11:58I'll start cheering when you give us some results.
00:12:01In case you're wondering, I've got another gun here.
00:12:03Loaded.
00:12:04What's the matter?
00:12:05Don't you trust me?
00:12:07Never.
00:12:08Calling SS-972.
00:12:11Calling SS-972.
00:12:13Over.
00:12:14This is SS-972.
00:12:16Go ahead.
00:12:18Agent Foreman reporting.
00:12:20We're on Highway 40.
00:12:20I've got the boy.
00:12:22Did everything go all right?
00:12:23Yeah, no trouble.
00:12:25Perfect cooperation.
00:12:27Good.
00:12:27Keep checking with us.
00:12:29Right.
00:12:29When we get to Kansas City.
00:12:33Well, how's it feel to be free?
00:12:34I like your plate.
00:12:36Why should you?
00:12:37You're getting a square shake.
00:12:38All we want are those plates.
00:12:40And your pals.
00:12:41Don't worry, I'll find them.
00:12:42Only give me a little time.
00:12:44The quicker you do it, the quicker you'll be considered for parole.
00:12:46We'll keep our end of the bargain.
00:12:48Listen, I'm pulling my end, too.
00:12:49Only keep out of my hair.
00:12:50I've got a lot of contacts to look up.
00:12:52Old leads.
00:12:53Not going to help any with you tagging along, you know.
00:12:55Sorry.
00:12:56Until we catch this bunch, you and I are going to stick so close together.
00:12:58When you scratch your back, you'll be scratching mine.
00:13:01Get used to it, Stuart.
00:13:13Long distance?
00:13:14Uh, that call to Chicago, Fred Simpson.
00:13:16Any answer yet?
00:13:18Well, keep checking out.
00:13:22Bill Branch is out.
00:13:23Call me back.
00:13:25That call to Chicago is doing nice, too.
00:13:28Up, we'll keep checking.
00:13:29You're doing great.
00:13:30Yeah.
00:13:31Gum?
00:13:32No, thanks.
00:13:34By the way, whatever happened to your old girlfriend, Meg Dixon?
00:13:37Not a bad-looking thing.
00:13:39Let me see.
00:13:45Nosy, Bert, aren't you?
00:13:47Where is she now, Tris?
00:13:49She's not in Detroit.
00:13:49We checked there.
00:13:50Oh, no, then she got married.
00:13:52Last I heard she was living in Newark, raising a family.
00:13:55You're lying, that's for sure.
00:13:56Yeah.
00:13:57Okay, you tell me that.
00:13:59I wonder what's become of Meg.
00:14:01Sounds like a title to a song.
00:14:17You cut yourself?
00:14:18Yeah, that's how many glass.
00:14:19Bill.
00:14:20I'm trying to catch it.
00:14:20Let's see.
00:14:21Oh, my God.
00:14:51Hey.
00:15:05Oh, man.
00:15:28You're quite welcome.
00:15:47Laurie, some cigarettes, please.
00:15:51Laurie.
00:15:52Okay.
00:15:54I'll take the usual, Laurie.
00:15:56How you doing?
00:15:57Not bad, Mr. Hackett.
00:15:59I don't have the right change for this ten.
00:16:01I'll have to give you a lot of singles.
00:16:02Keep it.
00:16:03I don't like a lot of singles.
00:16:05Too bulky.
00:16:07Weighs me down.
00:16:08You travel light, don't you, Mr. Hackett?
00:16:11Well, I travel.
00:16:12And I may be moving on if you don't show a little interest.
00:16:16Los Angeles is one town I can do without.
00:16:18Be careful.
00:16:19You're talking to a native daughter.
00:16:20I might report you.
00:16:22Okay.
00:16:22When you do, tell them I don't like their brand of hospitality.
00:16:25Guy can die of lonesomeness here.
00:16:29Try and hang on a while, won't you?
00:16:31You might change your mind.
00:16:37That's quite a guy.
00:16:39He must own a few dozen oil wells, or else he thinks cigarettes cost ten bucks a pack.
00:16:44If he told me you was lonesome, I'd encourage him.
00:16:46You mean if you were a girl?
00:16:48Well, sure, I...
00:16:58Well, hello.
00:17:00I thought your big night was over.
00:17:02I hope not.
00:17:04Not yet, anyway.
00:17:06I, uh, thought you might need a little protection.
00:17:10Yeah?
00:17:10From who?
00:17:11Oh, from lone wolves.
00:17:13Maybe a wolf pack, even.
00:17:15Oh, that's very nice of you.
00:17:17But who protects me from you?
00:17:18Hey!
00:17:19Look at me.
00:17:21Don't you see character written in this face?
00:17:26Uh, you are sort of a character.
00:17:29But I prefer to go home alone, if you don't mind.
00:17:32Well, shall we say goodnight or wait until?
00:17:36Until what?
00:17:37Until a prowl car comes along and I yell at them.
00:17:41I'll go quietly.
00:17:42I don't want anything to disturb what's going to be a delightful relationship.
00:17:47You can hope, just like anyone else.
00:17:50I guess.
00:18:05It's me, Tris.
00:18:06Oh, honey!
00:18:15Oh, I'm so worried.
00:18:17I read about your escape in the papers.
00:18:19I thought they'd find you.
00:18:23Who's that creep following you?
00:18:25Nobody.
00:18:25Just a barnacle angel on the club.
00:18:27But what happened?
00:18:29Tell you later.
00:18:29Where do you live?
00:18:30Not far.
00:18:37I'm out of a prayer.
00:18:39The feds tabbed me for a stool pigeon.
00:18:42They even sprung me, the dopes.
00:18:44Then I sprung one of them.
00:18:46Imagine.
00:18:47Tris Stewart.
00:18:48Playing ball with the cops.
00:18:51So all they got left now is some blind alley tips and an empty bag in their hands.
00:18:55No cream, sugar.
00:18:57What do you mean?
00:18:57No cream or no sugar?
00:19:00Confusing, yeah.
00:19:03Oh, honey, I'm glad you're back.
00:19:06I like it.
00:19:11I like you, too.
00:19:14Tell me.
00:19:16Anybody been prowling around?
00:19:17Cops, I mean, asking questions?
00:19:19No, nobody.
00:19:21Not since I moved out here and changed my name to Lori Frederick.
00:19:24That's good.
00:19:30We'll work fast.
00:19:32A strike, then Mexico for keeps.
00:19:35Does that sound good?
00:19:36Oh, then can we go in?
00:19:38Well, first I gotta get in touch with my ex-partner, Sam Hooker.
00:19:42That dirty rat getting rich off my plates while I rot in a pen.
00:19:48I'll pay him a little surprise visit tomorrow morning.
00:19:51It won't take long to make a deal with him.
00:19:54And after that, baby, it's Mexico for you and me.
00:20:11Yes?
00:20:12Oh, Brill.
00:20:14Sure, go ahead.
00:20:17Just like that, huh?
00:20:19Tomorrow?
00:20:20Good work.
00:20:22All right, stay with it.
00:20:26Well, if they took the census tonight, we'd have one more bad citizen in our midst.
00:20:30Let me guess.
00:20:32Could it be my ex-roommate, Stuart?
00:20:34None other.
00:20:34Just for the win.
00:20:35He's with the Fredericks girl right now.
00:20:37I'd like to have ten minutes alone with that guy for the mauling he gave me in Kansas City.
00:20:41On the house, too.
00:20:43As they say, orders are orders.
00:20:46Yeah, but I'd still like ten minutes alone with him when the orders didn't read, pull my punches.
00:20:51Better flatten him a dozen times.
00:20:53Sure you could.
00:20:54And you'd still be listening to him making phone calls.
00:20:57And we'd still be tracking down false leads.
00:21:00Except for your pride, it's better this way.
00:21:06Is this private?
00:21:07Not at all.
00:21:08Glad to see you, Downey.
00:21:10I want you to meet Fred Foreman.
00:21:11This is John Downey.
00:21:12Glad to know you.
00:21:13He's the one who let Stuart give him the slip in Kansas City.
00:21:16Good luck, Downey.
00:21:17When you see Stuart, give him ten bells from me, will you?
00:21:19I'm looking forward to it.
00:21:20I've got news for you.
00:21:22Stuart's in town.
00:21:24Oh.
00:21:25Where is he?
00:21:26Well, at the moment, he's with the girl.
00:21:29Huh.
00:21:29Well, don't look so unhappy.
00:21:31After all, it's his girl.
00:21:33I'm beginning to realize that.
00:21:35Cigarette?
00:21:35No, thanks.
00:21:36What's the matter?
00:21:36Won't you give you a tumble?
00:21:37Just for tips.
00:21:39Maybe I'm losing my touch.
00:21:40Maybe you never had it.
00:21:42Or else she's too smart for you.
00:21:44How about it?
00:21:44No, I don't think so.
00:21:46As far as she and everyone at the club's concerned, I'm just Johnny Hackett.
00:21:49A very shady character.
00:21:52They bother to look me up.
00:21:53I've been everything from a card shop to a confidence man with a record to prove it.
00:21:56I know Hackett's record.
00:21:57Every night he went home and robbed his own mother.
00:22:00Well, I haven't done that yet, but...
00:22:02Okay.
00:22:05Now, according to the report, Stuart starts moving in the morning.
00:22:10He's after the plates.
00:22:11Fine.
00:22:12And, uh, who has the plates?
00:22:14Ever hear of Sam Hooker?
00:22:17Uh-uh.
00:22:20He's after the plates.
00:22:21Well, I've been waiting for you.
00:22:27He put his hip-hop in the morning.
00:22:27Nice job.
00:22:28No, don't I am.
00:22:33See you.
00:22:34You're about to see yourux now, Lee.

00:22:45Bye bye.
00:22:52THE END
00:23:19Oh, you are.
00:23:20Better welcome, I'd say.
00:23:24Well, you have to blast my way in to see my old partner.
00:23:27What? What?
00:23:28Wake up. Open your eyes. Don't you remember me?
00:23:33Oh, I remember. It's you, Triss.
00:23:37I didn't recognize you right off the bat.
00:23:39It's been such a long time.
00:23:41Didn't you know I was out?
00:23:43No.
00:23:43No. No, but then, I haven't been feeling well, Triss.
00:23:47I don't get around much anymore. I stay pretty close to home.
00:23:51Oh, but now that you're back,
00:23:53what do you say you and me have a little drink, huh?
00:23:55What do you say you and me have a little drink, Triss?
00:24:14This isn't exactly a social call.
00:24:17Well, but you are glad to see me, aren't you, Triss?
00:24:20That all depends.
00:24:22On what?
00:24:23On how good a partner you've been to me.
00:24:26I've been doing time for the two of us, remember?
00:24:29That gave you a chance to grow a sweet bankroll for us.
00:24:31Where's my share?
00:24:35I lost it, Triss, but I can...
00:24:38Where's the plates?
00:24:41I have a little drink, Triss.
00:24:42Where are they?
00:24:44I sold them.

00:24:47You're a kid.

00:24:48No, no, no, Triss.
00:24:49I was going to stash them away,
00:24:51but things got awfully tough after they nailed you,
00:24:53and the place was hot,
00:24:55and I got scared, and I locked my nerve,
00:24:56and I sold them.
00:25:00Where's my cut?

00:25:06and cards and dice.
00:25:07My luck's been awful bad.

00:38:23I don't know what you're talking about.
00:38:24Laurie Fredericks, the girl at the club.
00:38:27Get up.
00:38:31Next time you even take a look at her, I'll cool you for keeps.
00:38:34If you didn't have a gun on me, I'd beat your brains out.
00:38:37She Penny Annie grifter.
00:38:40Oh, I see.
00:38:41So you're big time, huh?
00:38:43Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
00:38:45I've been rummaging through your gear.
00:38:48By the looks of things, you're not too big.
00:38:50Cold cards, cold dice.
00:38:52I'd say there was quite a bit of room for improvement.
00:38:54I'm doing all right.
00:38:55Yeah?
00:38:56How'd you like to do a little better?
00:39:00I don't like guns.
00:39:02I had something else in mind.
00:39:04Oh, keep it there.
00:39:05Too good to keep.
00:39:07How'd you like to fit yourself into a good deal?
00:39:12Sorry.
00:39:13I don't make deals with strangers.
00:39:16Particularly when their name is Triss Stewart.
00:39:18What difference does that make?
00:39:20I read about that break.
00:39:22You're pretty hot, sure, to be hiding out.
00:39:24Uh-uh.
00:39:25Not when there's a big jackpot ripe for taking.
00:39:28All I need's the right combination.
00:39:31You might be it.
00:39:32Listen, if you thought that, why did you open with a punch on my nose?
00:39:35Yeah, because I was griped at you.
00:39:36But three will get you five.
00:39:38I can make you forget that when you hear my offer.
00:39:39Okay, make it.
00:39:40I'm listening.
00:39:42Okay.
00:39:43If I had 25 Gs, I could stretch it to a quarter of a million.
00:39:47Don't interrupt.
00:39:47That quarter of a million's phony.
00:39:49But so good, it would pass in a bank.
00:39:52And I already got the territory to operate in.
00:39:55That's one racket I know, brother.
00:39:57So does the government.
00:39:59Yeah, look who's talking.
00:40:00Of course, they don't know about you and your racket.
00:40:04Boy, you at least make a strike.
00:40:06Besides, I take all the risks.
00:40:08Even so, I don't like tangling with counterfeit dough.
00:40:11Once you burn your fingers on that, it takes a long time to heal.
00:40:14Didn't I just say I do all the work?
00:40:15All you have to do is to rustle up the 25 Gs, can you?
00:40:19Well, the bite doesn't worry me.
00:40:21It's just that it's out of my line.
00:40:24Let me think it over.
00:40:26Well, think hard.
00:40:27I'll know where to find you.
00:40:28Drop in later.
00:40:29You want to punch something, punch the door first.
00:40:32I'll wake up just as quick.
00:40:34No hard feelings.
00:40:44Never heard of this guy, Johnny Hackett.
00:40:46Maybe you don't get around like you used to.
00:40:48This front business is a catchy anchor.
00:40:50Did you miss more dope on him?
00:40:52He and Bugs and McGill used to work the line together.
00:40:55Now, pleasure boats.
00:40:55They made three successful trips before the captain got wise to him and invited him to travel by rowboat.
00:41:01Well, bring him in.
00:41:09Hackett, this is Sylvester.
00:41:10Say hello, boys.
00:41:11Let's get down to Cases.
00:41:12How are you?
00:41:12Hello.
00:41:13By Cases, he means money, Hackett.
00:41:16I understand you're ready.
00:41:17That depends.
00:41:19Mind if I see the attraction?
00:41:32Try that for size.
00:41:44The skin you left to touch.
00:41:46I have never yet seen its equal, Hackett.
00:41:50I have.
00:41:51In any cash drawer, this is genuine.
00:41:53What are you trying to pull on me?
00:41:57He thinks it's the McCoy.
00:41:59How do you like that?
00:42:00I thought you said you knew what the quill looked like.
00:42:02Are you kidding, Hackett?
00:42:02No, it looks real.
00:42:04Let me see it again.
00:42:07Hackett, you're looking at the cream of the crop.
00:42:10It's a plenty fine job.
00:42:12But Uncle Sam didn't make it.
00:42:15Look at that border.
00:42:16Those sharp lines.
00:42:18This one's on the level.
00:42:20Come down.
00:42:22See the difference?
00:42:25Guess I owe you an apology.
00:42:27Yeah, it's clear all right that you have to look over close.
00:42:31Sorry I didn't tumble the first time.
00:42:33But I had to be sure.
00:42:34Oh, think nothing of it.
00:42:35I'd have done the same thing in your place.
00:42:37Am I?
00:42:38Gathering your soul?
00:42:40Next problem is delivery.
00:42:42Any ideas, Triss?
00:42:44Hackett's got to draw this dough first.
00:42:46Well, that'd be tomorrow.
00:42:47How about us making a meet someplace in town, huh?
00:42:49Sure, any time after the bank's open.
00:42:52Around noon?
00:42:53Noon's fine.
00:42:54Suppose we contact in Hollywood.
00:42:56Someplace along Fountain Avenue?
00:42:58All right.
00:42:58How about between Cristen Heights and Hayworth?
00:43:00On the north side of the street.
00:43:01Fine.
00:43:02Is that all right with you, Hackett?
00:43:02Whatever you say.
00:43:03It's a deal, then.
00:43:04Noon tomorrow.
00:43:08Noon tomorrow.
00:43:09Noon tomorrow.
00:43:12Noon.
00:43:13Noon.
00:43:42Go ahead, John.
00:43:44The deal is on.
00:43:45Delivery will be made at 12 noon tomorrow.
00:43:48Stewart and I will park on Fountain Avenue between Crescent Heights and Hayworth, north
00:43:53side of the street.
00:43:54This looks like the real thing.
00:43:55We'll have the place staked out.
00:43:57Every man will be covered.
00:43:58But don't close in until you actually see my money pass into the receiver's hands.
00:44:03That'll be the signal.
00:44:04Right, County.
00:44:05When I see you hand over the money, that'll be my cue.
00:44:08My boys won't move until I tell them.
00:44:10Good luck.
00:44:28Now, you all have your positions.
00:44:31I'll be in front of the grocery store.
00:44:34When I see our agent hand over the money, I'll take a beer case off a stack and set it
00:44:40on the sidewalk.
00:44:42That'll be your signal to close in.
00:44:46When it touches the sidewalk, not before.
00:44:50Now, I want it understood that nobody makes a move until you get the signal.
00:44:54If you jump the gun, we can blow this whole case and maybe lose a man.
00:44:59So keep your eyes on me.
00:45:01Is that clear?
00:45:05All right.
00:45:06And have your standby cars ready.
00:45:08They may try a getaway.
00:45:10That's all, gentlemen.
00:45:12Let's go.
00:45:27Let's go.
00:45:28Let's go.
00:45:31Let's go.
00:46:39Gagey, isn't he?
00:46:40Thinks it might be a trap.
00:46:41I like guys that are careful.
00:46:44Means less chance of a slip-up.
00:46:45Yeah, but I want to get it over with and get going.
00:47:14All right, Tris.
00:47:17Hello, Hackett.
00:47:18Hello.
00:47:19Got your money?
00:47:22Now, let's see one.
00:47:24Now, now, now.
00:47:26Just a minute.
00:47:34Uh-huh.
00:47:37Okay.
00:47:40Okay.
00:48:02Let's have the package.
00:48:04How about my payoff?
00:48:11Hey, what's the idea?
00:48:12What do you mean, Tris?
00:48:13Oh, those scraps are cut-paste.
00:48:21I have to be sure.
00:48:22Might be a trap.
00:48:23You, I know.
00:48:24Hackett, I don't.
00:48:26You knucklehead.
00:48:26Pulling a test run on me.
00:48:33Now, cool off.
00:48:35There's nothing new about a test run.
00:48:37Just playing safe.
00:48:39Yeah, well, let's stop playing.
00:48:40Hackett's on the up and up.
00:48:41And I'm running out of patience.
00:48:42When do we deal?
00:48:44You'll hear from me.
00:48:45You okay in my books, Hackett?
00:49:02How careful can you get?
00:49:04I'll explain it to you later.
00:49:05Let's get out of here.
00:49:21I can sure use this.
00:49:23What a day.
00:49:25Yeah.
00:49:27Here's the money and time to spend it.
00:49:30I'll drink to that.
00:49:31Real money.
00:49:32And no more test runs.
00:49:35You can say that again.
00:49:37I'm a little mixed up.
00:49:38I thought you guys were in a hurry to make a deal.
00:49:41You always waste time like this.
00:49:43Let's face it.
00:49:44Sylvester wasn't sure of it.
00:49:46Why?
00:49:47You might have been working with the cops.
00:49:50Okay, suppose you were and they made a pinch.
00:49:52All that he got would have been a bundle of paper.
00:49:54Plain paper.
00:49:55You can't get a conviction on that.
00:49:58Try it sometime.
00:49:59I'm not in that business, thanks.
00:50:01I play for keeps.
00:50:02Well, so do we, Johnny.
00:50:04They just didn't want to take any chances, that's all.
00:50:06You're in now, Hackett.
00:50:09Next trip will be the real thing.
00:50:10No more paper.
00:50:12Okay, I'm ready when they are, but the sooner the better.
00:50:14When do you deal, Trish?
00:50:16Soon as I hear from Sylvester.
00:50:19I'll get a hold of you, don't worry.
00:50:21Thanks for the drink.
00:50:23I'll see you at the club.
00:50:26I'll be at the bar spending real money.
00:50:28And for that, you get real service.
00:50:31And Hackett, you can forget about those ten buck tips.
00:50:33You're a member of the family now.
00:50:35Kind of a brother.
00:50:36Thanks.
00:50:37That makes it easier.
00:50:38And don't forget, that makes Laura your sister.
00:50:41Treat her that way.
00:50:43That's not so easy.
00:50:52Good evening, Mr. Hackett.
00:50:54Good evening, Laurie.
00:50:57This way, please.
00:51:07Johnny.
00:51:08Johnny Downey.
00:51:09How you been, Johnny?
00:51:10I'm afraid you got the wrong party, pal.
00:51:12Oh, not a chance.
00:51:13Well, Betty.
00:51:14Betty, come here.
00:51:15It's been a long time.
00:51:17Hey, I want you to meet the wife.
00:51:19Betty, this is Johnny Downey.
00:51:21You're making a mistake.
00:51:23My name is Hackett.
00:51:24Hackett?
00:51:25Oh, don't give me that.
00:51:26You're Johnny Downey.
00:51:28The guy's plastered.
00:51:29Get him alone, Bill.
00:51:30I'd appreciate it if you would.
00:51:31I'm expecting somebody.
00:51:33Oh.
00:51:34Oh, I get it.
00:51:36Come on, Betty.
00:51:37The man's right.
00:51:37He's not Johnny.
00:51:39I'm sorry, pal.
00:51:40I should have known.
00:51:48What was that all about?
00:51:50No, I'll tell you when we can see you.
00:51:58He's a government agent.
00:51:59Government agent?
00:52:00Probably undercover.
00:52:02I hope I didn't tip his hand.
00:52:03You and your mysterious friend.
00:52:05Oh, I tell you, Betty, I knew him when he was in the Army.
00:52:07Military intelligence.
00:52:09Before that, he was in Secret Service.
00:52:10Oh, what a dope iron.
00:52:12Why don't you admit you got the brush?
00:52:14Waiter, two scotch and sodas, please.
00:52:16Yes, ma'am.
00:52:18Secret Service.
00:52:19Ha.
00:52:20Ha.
00:52:21Ha.
00:52:22Ha.
00:52:34Hey, you're home early.
00:52:35That rat trap I rented gave me the creeps.
00:52:37Then I come over and have her.
00:52:38Tris, I left some packages out in the hall.
00:52:40Will you help me with them?
00:52:45What's that?
00:52:45What's that?
00:52:47I didn't want to talk in there.
00:52:49Tris, Hackett's a cop.
00:52:50His real name's Downey.
00:52:51Secret Service or something.
00:52:52Who told you that?
00:52:53Some customers.
00:52:54They were talking and they said he was an agent with the government.
00:52:56I thought the room might be wired.
00:52:57All right.
00:52:58Let's find out.
00:53:00I'll be quiet.
00:53:30I'll be quiet.
00:53:59I'll be quiet.
00:54:02What's all over?
00:54:03He knows about us and about everything.
00:54:05Yeah, he knows too much.
00:54:06What are we going to do?
00:54:08We'll play along.
00:54:09Listen, we're not dead yet.
00:54:10There's still 25 G's.
00:54:11No, I'm frightened.
00:54:12Let's get out while we can.
00:54:13We'll get out all right.
00:54:14Don't worry.
00:54:15But Hackett's going to pay our expenses.
00:54:17Now, this is what you do.
00:54:18You stay here tonight.
00:54:20First thing tomorrow morning, buy us two tickets to Mexico City.
00:54:23Evening plane.
00:54:23Use the name Rodney.
00:54:25Well, where are you going?
00:54:26I got a little business to attend to.
00:54:28I'll meet you at the airport restaurant.
00:54:29You got that name straight?
00:54:31Rodney, yeah.
00:54:31That's right.
00:54:32Now, when you leave, use the back door.
00:54:35Make sure that you're not tailed.
00:54:52Oh, hello, Stuart.
00:54:54What's up?
00:54:55Just heard from Sylvester.
00:54:57Said to meet him at one o'clock sharp.
00:55:00Where?
00:55:01In front of the hotel.
00:55:04Then he'd take us to the spot.
00:55:05Well, I'm ready a few years.
00:55:07Have some coffee?
00:55:09Nope.
00:55:10You, uh, cut the dough?
00:55:13Not on me.
00:55:14I don't make a practice of lining my pockets with 25 G's in cash.
00:55:18After the last rehearsal, I put it back in the boat.
00:55:22Now, you'd better get dressed.
00:55:24Then we'll go down and take it out.
00:55:58You got the money?
00:55:59Mm-hmm.
00:56:01You'd better go back to the hotel and wait for Sylvester, hmm?
00:56:03Oh, let's just keep moving.
00:56:05Might be wiser.
00:56:07Well, what's the matter?
00:56:08Anything wrong?
00:56:09Could be.
00:56:10Never can tell.
00:56:12You think we'd better call off the deal?
00:56:15I already called it off.
00:56:18You kidding?
00:56:19No, Hackett, you remind me of somebody.
00:56:22Like who?
00:56:23Like a Secret Service agent.
00:56:25I'll keep driving.
00:56:27Don't be a fool, Stuart.
00:56:28What do you want to mop a good chance for?
00:56:30A chance for what?
00:56:30To play stoolie?
00:56:31How do the deal, Stuart?
00:56:32That's why you're out.
00:56:33And that's why I'm staying out.
00:56:34On my own terms, too.
00:56:36You had yourself quite a time, didn't you?
00:56:39Playing a hot shot gambler, tipping heavy for smokes, making a play for my gal.
00:56:43Why don't you think of your gal, Stuart?
00:56:44Give her a break.
00:56:45Why don't you shut up?
00:56:47Pretty lucky for me I found you out when I did.
00:56:51You know, you're the only link between me and your federal buddies.
00:56:54That's a link I'm going to have to cut.
00:56:57Just keep driving.
00:56:59I want to show you a beautiful view.
00:57:37Take the money out.
00:57:41Throw it in the back seat.
00:57:44Follow me out.
00:57:48Come on.
00:57:51Come on.
00:57:57Come on.
00:58:02Come on.
00:58:09Come on.
00:58:38Fuck him, assault with intent to kill.
00:58:40I'll sign a complaint, put him where he can't talk to anybody.
00:58:44Don't worry, if he wants to talk, he'll have to talk to himself.
00:58:50Oh, uh, book him under another name.
00:58:54Just tell the newspaper boys he's a hitchhiker who tried to stick up.
00:59:00We don't want any publicity on this.
00:59:03How would the name of Briggs do?
00:59:04Oh, good as any. Agent in charge Gunby, please.
00:59:08My mother-in-law's name.
00:59:09I'd just like to see how it'd look on a police blotter.
00:59:14Mr. Gunby, this is Downey.
00:59:17Stewart was tipped off.
00:59:18I'll explain later how it happened, but I'm booking him at Venice Police Station.
00:59:22Well, there goes the case.
00:59:24Wait a minute. It's not dead yet.
00:59:27Why can't I go ahead without Stewart?
00:59:28That's pretty risky.
00:59:30Without him along, he'll be too suspicious.
00:59:32That's a chance I'll take.
00:59:34Stewart can't tip him now.
00:59:36My big worry is Laurie Fredericks.
00:59:38She could fix me good.
00:59:39Unless you pick her up before I contact Sylvester.
00:59:44All right, we'll do that for you.
00:59:46But it's your idea.
00:59:48Where do you meet Sylvester?
00:59:49At his office.
00:59:51That's it, then.
00:59:52We'll be right behind if you leave with him.
00:59:54Good luck.
00:59:55Thank you, sir.
01:00:04Curry speaking.
01:00:05This is Gunby.
01:00:07Is Laurie Fredericks in her apartment now?
01:00:09I think so.
01:00:10We're getting music from her room.
01:00:11Just continue your present operation.
01:00:13Pick her up immediately and bring her to my office.
01:00:15Sir.
01:00:16Gunby says pick up the Fredericks girl right away.
01:00:24Looks like she's gone.
01:00:26Her clothes are gone, too.
01:00:27Well, we'd better make a report.
01:00:43Hang up quick.
01:00:44Time to win, Tony.
01:00:46You got a wild hair or something?
01:00:47What's up?
01:00:48They picked up Stewart.
01:00:51You there?
01:00:52No.
01:00:53Laurie saw it.
01:00:54Stewart was just leaving her place.
01:00:56Plainclothesman took him.
01:00:57She phoned me right away.
01:00:58When did they take him?
01:00:59About an hour ago.
01:01:02Plainclothesman.
01:01:03Picking up Stewart for the place.
01:01:04The prison escaped.
01:01:05Yeah, and it could be secret service agents out on a counterfeit tip.
01:01:09How could they get a lead on us?
01:01:11How?
01:01:11How do they ever?
01:01:12All I know is Stewart's hotter than a firecracker.
01:01:14He can explode us right into the clink with him.
01:01:16Stewart will never talk.
01:01:18I don't trust anybody not to talk.
01:01:19Not when the clamps are really on.
01:01:30I wouldn't answer that, Sylvester.
01:01:35They're probably getting set for a raid right now, trying to locate you.
01:01:46Look, Sylvester.
01:01:47I took a long chance to tip you off.
01:01:49We haven't got any time to waste.
01:01:51What's on your mind?
01:01:52I'm gonna lose myself for good.
01:01:54But first, let's go through with our deal.
01:01:56Where I'm going, I can peddle all kinds of queer without a question.
01:01:59Yeah, that's a good idea.
01:02:00I think I'll find myself a cave somewhere.
01:02:03I'm waiting for Mac to pick me up.
01:02:05You won't have to wait for him.
01:02:06My car's downstairs.
01:02:07Come on.
01:02:14But operator, a minute ago I got a busy signal.
01:02:32There.
01:02:36I don't know.
01:02:39Leave your knife.
01:02:4250 por lit.
01:02:46It's all for a while.
01:02:47But he had to bend down some color.
01:03:13There's a car that's been with us a little too long.
01:03:16Take the next corner.
01:03:35Are you sure?
01:03:36Yes.
01:03:37Take the next corner easy and then step on it.
01:04:05Are you still behind us?
01:04:06I can't see him now.
01:04:08I thought he was going to turn with us.
01:04:09You probably imagined it.
01:04:11I never did see any car.
01:04:12Maybe.
01:04:13Stop at the first handy bar, you see.
01:04:15I thought we were going to the place.
01:04:17Later, tonight.
01:04:18All right, now I need a drink.
01:04:20Okay.
01:04:57Hello.
01:04:59This is Jack.
01:05:00Now get this.
01:05:01Stuart's girl saw him get picked up.
01:05:03Hackett and I are on our way over to the plant.
01:05:05Get everything out of that office and check with me later.
01:05:07Right.
01:05:18I'm looking for Trist Stewart.
01:05:19Is he here?
01:05:20Who are you?
01:05:20I'm Stuart's girl.
01:05:21I thought maybe he might be here.
01:05:22Wait a minute.
01:05:23You say you're looking for Stuart?
01:05:25Yeah, I've got to find him right away.
01:05:27Something's wrong here.
01:05:28It don't add up.
01:05:29What do you mean?
01:05:29I don't know, but I'd better let the boss handle this.
01:05:32Come on.
01:05:33Can't you use the phone?
01:05:34Listen, sister.
01:05:35Where we're going, they don't use the phone.
01:05:36How far do we have to go?
01:05:38To the car barn.
01:05:43This is like looking for a needle in a haystack.
01:05:45Try the downtown area.
01:05:47We've covered this.
01:05:48Yes, sir.
01:05:49With the Fredericks girl on the loose, Downey won't have a chance.
01:05:52Unless we can get to him before she does.
01:06:17Well, you're close to transportation.
01:06:19You can always take a trolley.
01:06:21When this is over, I'm taking a boat.
01:06:24I'm taking a boat.
01:06:37I'm taking a boat.
01:06:38I'm taking care of the rooms.
01:06:40Okay, bye.
01:06:42Okay, bye.
01:06:43Bye.
01:06:43Bye.
01:06:46Bye.
01:07:04What's this all about?
01:07:05We changed our plans, Al.
01:07:07I thought you were going to deliver it to the other place.
01:07:08They nailed Stuart.
01:07:09We make the transfer now and blow it, which means closing shop everything.
01:07:12In here.
01:07:15Finish up, boys.
01:07:16We're moving.
01:07:16Stack everything to the truck and let's get out of here.
01:07:18I'll give you a hand.
01:07:28Same as the sample.
01:07:31Yeah, guess so.
01:07:33All right, let's have your money.
01:07:36Mind if I see the rest of the parcel?
01:07:39What's the matter?
01:07:41You afraid we'll shortchange it?
01:07:43Well, 25 grand, I'd like to be sure.
01:07:46No offense.
01:07:47Okay.
01:07:49But don't take all night about it.
01:08:08Come on, we'll walk from here.
01:08:12Come on, we'll walk from here.
01:08:18Come on, we'll walk from here.
01:08:20Pressure's up, doesn't it?
01:08:21So far, great.
01:08:23With these, I could start my own private marshal plan in South America.
01:08:29Meet my family.
01:08:30Mama and Papa.
01:08:33Say, those are beautiful.
01:08:35Mind if I take a look?
01:08:36Not at all.
01:08:37Hackett, you're looking at masterpieces.
01:08:39I take great pride in these plates.
01:08:43Look at the scrollwork, the meticulous care.
01:08:46Yeah, they're real works of art.
01:08:49Treasures, like paintings.
01:08:51I think so.
01:08:52But anyone can own prints of paintings.
01:08:56I happen to prefer the originals.
01:08:59Oh, it tastes so identical in that respect.
01:09:02Would you happen to know who made these?
01:09:05No.
01:09:06No, I'm sorry.
01:09:07The artist neglected to sign his name.
01:09:11Yeah, I'm sorry, too.
01:09:13I'd like to look him up someday.
01:09:15You want to sell these?
01:09:17Oh, not a chance, Hackett.
01:09:19These are my old age pension.
01:09:21The only thing better than money are the plates that make it.
01:09:29Tell the boss to come out here.
01:09:30I've got to see him right away.
01:09:32Okay.
01:09:48Mike's outside with the girl.
01:09:49He wants to see her right away.
01:09:59What's this all about?
01:10:00Who's she?
01:10:01This is Triss Stewart's girl.
01:10:02What's the idea of bringing her here?
01:10:03You know better than that.
01:10:04But listen, boss.
01:10:05Wait a minute.
01:10:05I've got to find Triss.
01:10:06Is he here?
01:10:07What are you talking about?
01:10:07You know what happened to Stewart.
01:10:09But I don't.
01:10:09I haven't seen him since last night.
01:10:10Who are you kidding?
01:10:11You told Hackett you saw him get pinched.
01:10:13I didn't tell him anything.
01:10:15Don't you know Hackett's a cop?
01:10:16Ask Triss.
01:10:17He knows all about it.
01:10:18Hackett's a cop?
01:10:18Yes, he is.
01:10:19We even found a microphone in my apartment.
01:10:21You come with me.
01:10:23Get yourself lost.
01:10:24Okay.
01:10:34There's a friend of yours here, Johnny.
01:10:36Hackett, where's Triss?
01:10:38What about it?
01:10:40Get up.
01:10:41All right, Kristen.

01:11:29They're ready to move in now.
01:11:31You won't get as far as the stairs if you pull that trigger.
01:11:33I'm used to taking chances.
01:11:35Counterfeiting's one thing, murder's another.
01:11:37Don't put a noose around your neck.
01:11:39They'll hang the whole lot of you, and that includes you, Laurie.
01:11:41You're part of it.
01:11:42I'm not part of anything.
01:11:43You're part of it, whether you like it or not.
01:11:45You're in a bad spot, Laurie, and it's going to get worse.
01:11:47I only came here to find Triss.
01:11:49Where is he?
01:11:49I'll tell you.
01:11:50We locked him up because he didn't keep his part of the bargain.
01:11:53He tried to double-cross you and me both, Sylvester.
01:11:56Don't you see you can't even trust your own pals?
01:12:04It looks like I can't trust anybody.
01:12:06He had to do it to get out of jail.
01:12:08That's right.
01:12:09The police are very powerful.
01:12:10They can make you do most anything.
01:12:12Like talk out of turns.
01:12:15Yes, you are a part of this, and you are in a spot.
01:12:18I hate to see you getting in any deeper.
01:12:20You're in deep enough.
01:12:40No cordon around the block.
01:12:42Yes, sir.
01:13:02No cordon around the block.
01:13:21You try that area.
01:13:35You try that side, John.

01:16:54All right, bring it in.
01:16:56Have any trouble identifying the rest of the gang, John?
01:16:58Not a bit.
01:16:59Those are faces I'll never forget.
01:17:01I'll bet you won't.
01:17:02Put it down over here, Ovi.
01:17:04Yes, sir.
01:17:05Here are the money and the plates, and this is the inventory.
