00:09one problem not only can we not see it but we're not even 100% sure it exists at all

00:15recent report from the dark energy survey or des has found some new and interesting things about
00:20the mysterious energy state experts estimate the dark energy makes up some 70% of the observable
00:26universe and astronomers attribute the expansion of it to that very source now using better
00:31observations for more advanced telescopes and instrumentation dark energy researcher Robert
00:35Nickel says they may now have a much better idea of what's going on they use data from giant
00:40supernovae or exploding stars as a measurement tool to allow them to compare their mathematical
00:45expectations to real observations they now have the most accurate measurement for dark energy's
00:50equation state or the state that describes the ratio of pressure over energy density for a substance
00:55noted as w previously they believe dark energy's w value was negative one however their new
01:01observations have revealed it's closer to negative 0.8 so why is that important well any w value greater
01:07than negative one leads to the big rip model or where the constant expansion and acceleration of
01:12the universe eventually tears it apart this new number gives us better odds that won't happen
01:17meaning the universe isn't necessarily on a dead-end path to eventual destruction
