You know the glass I mean. The shower door gone cloudy and gray that will not come clean no matter how hard you scrub. You spray the store cleaner, you wipe and wipe, and still there is a fog that will not lift and hard white spots scattered across it. And you have started to think the glass itself is ruined and it is time to buy a new door. It is not ruined. Not even close. 00:20across it like it rained dirty water and dried. And you have started to think the glass itself
00:26is ruined, that this is just how it is now, and maybe it is time to buy a whole new
00:32door.
00:33I am here to tell you that glass is not ruined. It is not even close, and I can bring
00:40it back to
00:40clear with two things that together cost less than a sandwich. I am Elias Yoder. Now, I will be
00:49straight with you. We keep things plainer than most, and I do not have a glass shower door in my
00:55own home.
00:56But glass is glass, and hard water is hard water, and I have cleaned cloudy glass my whole life.
01:04The windows, the lamp chimneys, the canning jars gone white with mineral. The cloudy shower door
01:12is the very same trouble as all of those, and the very same fixes answer for it. So do not
01:20think this
01:20is not for you, because I live plain. The glass in your bathroom and the glass in my window are
01:28the
01:29same glass, and they cloud up for the same reason, and they come clean the same way. Let me say
01:36one
01:36thing, and then I will not bring it up again. I have gathered these old ways into a book over

01:43EliasYoder.com. If you want it, it is there. That is all. Now let us clean that glass.
01:53First, you have to understand that there are two different messes on that door, and they are not
01:59the same, and they do not come off the same way. Most folks fail because they treat them as one
02:06thing.
02:06They are two. The first is soap scum. The second is hard water stain, the mineral. You have to know
02:16which is which, because what lifts the one will not touch the other. So we are going to do this
02:24in two
02:24passes. First the soap scum, then the mineral. Get them in that order, and the job is easy. Mix them
02:33up,
02:34and you will scrub all day and get nowhere. So, the first mess, the soap scum. That is the greasy,
02:43filmy, cloudy coating, the stuff that feels a little slick or waxy under your fingers. That is not mineral.
02:52That is the leftover of the soap itself, the fats and oils in it, built up, film on film, over
03:01a long
03:01time, mixed with body oil and whatever else, baked onto the glass by the warm wet of the shower day
03:09after day. It is greasy in its nature, and there is one plain cheap thing that cuts grease and film
03:18like that better than any fancy blue bottle they sell you, and you have it in your kitchen right now.
03:26Vinegar. Plain white vinegar. And let me tell you in plain words why vinegar answers for scum,
03:34because if you know why a thing works, you will trust it and use it right. Soap scum has a
03:42good
03:42deal of lime and mineral bound up in it too, mixed with the grease, which is part of why it
03:48goes so hard
03:49and cloudy and clings so. Vinegar is a mild acid, a gentle sour, no stronger than what is in your
03:58pickle crock, and that mild sourness is just the thing to break down and dissolve that limey, greasy
04:07film and loosen its grip on the glass. It is strong enough to eat the scum and gentle enough to
04:15leave the
04:15glass be and never harm your hands. That is why it works where a plain soap does not. You are
04:24not
04:24scrubbing the scum off by force. You are letting the sour of the vinegar dissolve it loose first,
04:31so it lets go easy. There is no magic in it, and there is no danger in it either. It
04:38is just the right
04:40mild acid for a mildly limey, greasy mess, and it costs about a dollar a jug. Now, here is the
04:49thing
04:49about vinegar that most folks get wrong, and it is the whole secret to using it. They spray it on
04:56and
04:56wipe it right off, same as they would a store cleaner, and then they say vinegar does not work. Vinegar
05:04works
05:05fine. They just did not give it time. Vinegar needs to sit. It needs to soak. The vinegar has to
05:14lie
05:14there on the scum long enough to soften it and eat into it and loosen its grip on the glass,
05:20and that
05:21takes a few minutes. So here is what you do. You spray that glass down good and wet with the
05:27vinegar,
05:27all over, top to bottom. Do not be stingy with it. And then you walk away. You leave it be
05:35for two or
05:35three minutes. Let it soak. Let the vinegar do the hard work while you do nothing, which is the best
05:42kind
05:43of work there is. That soaking time is the whole trick. The vinegar loosens the scum so that it near
05:50falls off instead of you having to grind it off by main strength. After those two or three minutes,
05:57you take a soft sponge, the kind that will not scratch, the plain soft kind, and you wipe the
06:04glass down. And here is a small tip worth knowing. Start at the bottom and work up, not the top
06:11down.
06:12It seems backward, but there is a reason. If you dip your sponge in a cup of water as you
06:18go,
06:18and you start at the top, the drips run down and rinse the vinegar off the bottom of the glass
06:24before you have got to it, and then the bottom does not clean as well. Start at the bottom,
06:31work up, and every part of the glass gets its full soaking time. Little thing, but it is the difference
06:38between doing it once and doing it twice. Wipe the whole door down and you will feel that slick,
06:45greasy film come away under the sponge and leave the glass squeaking clean. Then rinse it off with clear
06:53water, a cup poured down from the top, or the sprayer if you have one, and that is the soap
06:59scum
06:59handled. Now, very often, once the scum is gone, you will find the glass is better, but still not clear.
07:08There are still those hard, cloudy patches, those white or grayish spots that the vinegar softened,
07:15but did not lift. That is the second mess, and it is a different animal. That is the mineral.
07:23That is hard water stain, and I want to take a moment to tell you what it actually is,
07:28because once you understand it, you will understand why it is so stubborn, and why the fix is what it
07:35is.
07:36Your water, unless you have gone to trouble to soften it, has minerals dissolved right in it, lime and
07:43calcium and such, picked up out of the ground the water traveled through. You cannot see them. The
07:50water looks clear, but they are in there. Now, when that water sits on your glass and then dries away,
07:57the water leaves up into the air, but the minerals cannot leave. They cannot turn to air. So they
08:05stay behind, right there on the glass, a little bit every time, drying into a hard, whitish crust.
08:13It is the very same thing as the white scale that builds up inside a kettle, or the ring in
08:19a stock pot,
08:20the exact same mineral left behind by dried water. And it is stone, mere enough. It is hard, it is
08:29bonded to
08:29the glass, and no amount of soap or vinegar or elbow grease is going to wipe stone off with a
08:36sponge.
08:37You could scrub till next Sunday. That mineral needs something that can actually take it down off the
08:43glass. My grandmother taught me what that mineral was before I ever knew the fine words for it, and she
08:51taught it at the kitchen sink, the way she taught most things. She had an old kettle, and inside it
08:58was
08:58furred thick and white with scale, and I asked her once what that white was, and why she could not
09:04scrub
09:04it out. And she filled a glass with our well water, and set it on the windowsill in the sun,
09:11and said,
09:12Watch this over the week. And I did. And the water slowly went down and down as it dried into
09:20the air,
09:20and by the end there was a faint white ring left in the bottom of that glass where the water
09:26had been.
09:27And she said, There. That is what is in every drop of water you drink, and it is good for
09:34your bones,
09:35but it is a nuisance on my kettle. The water goes up into the air, and cannot take the stone
09:41with it,
09:42so the stone stays. That was the whole lesson, and I have never forgotten it. The water leaves,
09:49and the mineral stays. Understand that one thing, and you understand every white crust, and cloudy spot,
09:56and furred kettle you will ever meet, and you will know that the answer is never a stronger soap,
10:03because it was never grease. It was stone all along. And here is where I am going to give you
10:10the best
10:10cleaning tip I know, and when you see it work, you will hardly believe your eyes, because it looks like
10:17you are about to ruin your glass, and instead it comes out perfect. The thing that takes hard water
10:24mineral off glass is steel wool. Now wait, before you jump, I know what steel wool does to things. It
10:33scratches, and you are picturing your shower door all scratched to gray ruin. But here is the piece you
10:40that you have to understand, and it is everything. Steel wool comes in grades, from coarse to fine,
10:47and there is one grade so fine, so soft, that it will take the mineral crust off the glass without
10:55scratching the glass at all. That grade is the finest there is, and on the package it is marked four
11:03zeros.
11:03Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, four zeros. That is the one. It is sometimes called four ought. I cannot stress
11:14this
11:14enough, so I am going to be very plain about it, because this is where somebody gets it wrong, and
11:20scratches their door, and blames me. You must use the four zeros grade, the finest. Steel wool comes in a
11:30range,
11:30and the coarse grades, the ones marked with numbers like one, or two, or three. Those absolutely will
11:38scratch your glass, and you will be sick about it. Look at the package. It will show the grades. You
11:45want
11:45the very finest, four zeros, and nothing coarser. If you are not sure, do not guess, and do not use
11:54it.
11:54Get the right grade first. With the four zeros grade, and only that grade, the steel is fine enough
12:03that it lifts the hard mineral, but is softer than the glass itself, so the glass takes no harm.
12:09That is the whole reason it works. It is harder than the crust, but gentler than the glass, and it
12:16lives
12:16right in that narrow space between. So, with your four zeros steel wool, and I would put on a pair
12:24of
12:24rubber gloves first, so the little steel fibers do not get into your fingers, you simply rub the glass
12:30where those hard water spots are. Just rub, with a little pressure, right over the cloudy mineral
12:37patches, and you will watch them vanish. Truly. That stubborn white crust that would not come off for
12:44anything. It just wipes away under the fine steel like it was never there, and the clear glass comes
12:51back underneath. It is one of the most satisfying things you will ever do in cleaning, and it feels
12:57like a trick, but it is only the right tool for the right mess. When you have gone over all
13:03the spots,
13:04rinse the glass down once more with clear water to carry off any little steel fibers, and there.
13:10Your glass is clear. Truly clear. Clear like it was new. The scum gone and the mineral gone both.
13:19Now I could stop there, and you would be happy for about two weeks, and then the cloud would start
13:24creeping back, and you would be right where you began. So let me give you the last part, which is
13:30the most valuable part, because it is the part that keeps you from having to do all of this over
13:35and over.
13:36Keeping it clear. The whole reason the glass clouds up is that water sits on it and dries, and leaves
13:44its mineral behind, over and over, day after day. So the secret to keeping it clear is simple to say.
13:52Do not let the water sit and dry on the glass. If the water never dries on the glass, it
13:58never leaves
13:58its mineral, and the glass stays clear. That is the entire principle. And there are two ways to do it,
14:05and I would use both. The first is the squeegee, and this is the plain honest answer, the one that
14:12costs almost nothing and works better than anything. A squeegee is just that rubber blade on a handle
14:19that wipes water off a flat surface in one clean stroke. You hang one right there in the shower on
14:25a
14:26little hook. And when you are done with your shower, before you step out, you take 30 seconds and you
14:32run the squeegee down the glass, top to bottom, a few strokes, and you push all that clinging water off
14:39the glass and down the drain while it is still wet. Now there is no water left sitting on the
14:46glass to dry
14:47and leave its mineral. Do that every day, every single shower, and your glass will stay clear for a
14:54very long time. 30 seconds a day saves you the whole big scrubbing job. That is the trade, and it
15:02is a good
15:03one. And I want to sit on that a moment, because it is the heart of the whole matter, and
15:08it is a lesson
15:09that goes far past a shower door. My grandfather had a saying he wore out on us boys, that a
15:16minute
15:17of tending saves an hour of mending. He meant it about everything. Wipe the tool dry before you hang
15:24it, and you will not spend an afternoon fighting rust. Shut the gate careful now, and you will not
15:31chase the cow at supper. And it is the same, exactly the same, with this glass. The man who spends
15:3830
15:39seconds a day with the squeegee never has the cloudy door in the first place. The man who does nothing
15:45spends a whole Saturday twice a year scrubbing with vinegar and steel wool. It is the same total trouble
15:54either way, near enough, but the little and often way is easier on you, and your glass is clear every
16:02single day in between, instead of only twice a year. That is the plain wisdom of it. The small, steady
16:10tending is not extra work. It is the same work, only spread thin enough that you hardly feel it, and
16:18it
16:18spares you the big miserable job at the end. So hang the squeegee where you cannot help but see it,
16:25and
16:26make it a habit, and the habit will do the work. The second thing you can do, on top of
16:32the squeegee,
16:32is give the clean glass a coat of something that makes the water bead up and run off instead of
16:40clinging and spreading. This is an old idea. A thin coat of plain wax rubbed onto clean dry glass and
16:49buffed to nothing with a soft cloth will make water bead right up and roll off the same way rain
16:56beads
16:57and rolls off a freshly waxed buggy or a well waxed table. The water cannot lie flat and spread and
17:05soak
17:06the way it does on bare glass. It pulls itself into beads and runs straight down and off. Less water
17:14clinging means less mineral left behind. You do that every so often, after a good cleaning, on the dry
17:22glass, and it helps the squeegee do its work and keeps the glass clearer longer. Some folks use a paste
17:31wax, some a little furniture wax. The principle is the same. Clean glass, thin coat, buff it near dry,
17:40and the water will bead and flee. And if you have ever waxed a table or a buggy or an
17:47old chest of
17:48drawers, you have already seen exactly why this works, so you can trust it without my say-so.
17:55Think how water sits on a raw, unwaxed board. It soaks right in, spreads out flat, lies there,
18:04and darkens the wood. Now think how water sits on that same board once it is waxed. It cannot soak,
18:12and it cannot spread. It draws up into little round beads that sit high and roll off at the first
18:20tilt.
18:21The wax gives the water nothing to grab. Glass is the same. Bare glass lets the water lie flat and
18:30spread
18:30and cling until it dries and leaves its mineral. Waxed glass will not let it lie flat at all, so
18:39it beads and
18:40runs off before it ever gets the chance to dry in place. It is the same plain principle that has
18:48kept
18:49water off of good furniture and good buggies for longer than any of us has been alive, only now you
18:56are
18:56putting it to work on your shower door. There is nothing new under the sun, only old wisdom carried
19:04to a new corner. So there is the whole of it. Vinegar with a good soak for the greasy soap
19:11scum,
19:11the fine four zeros steel wool for the hard mineral crust, and mind you get the right grade,
19:20and then the squeegee every day, and a wax coat now and then to keep it that way. Two cheap
19:26things to
19:27clean it, and a squeegee and some wax to keep it, and you never buy a new shower door or
19:33a single bottle
19:34of fancy glass cleaner again. Now let me say a word about who profits from you not knowing this, and
19:41I
19:42will say it careful, because I am not telling you there is a scheme, a room full of men plotting
19:48to sell you
19:48glass cleaner. It is quieter than that, and worse in a way, because it needs nobody to plan it. There
19:56is a
19:56whole shelf at the store of sprays and creams and special cloths for cleaning glass, and every one of
20:04them costs many times what a jug of vinegar costs, and none of them work a bit better, and the
20:10mineral
20:10ones do not work at all, because soap scum cleaner cannot touch mineral. But nobody makes a dollar
20:17selling you vinegar you already own and a squeegee you buy once. There is good, steady money in a
20:25bottle you buy again and again. So the plain old ways just quietly stop getting passed along, not
20:32because anyone hid them, but because there was no profit in teaching them and steady profit in you not
20:39knowing. The money runs the one way, and the knowledge grows over like a path nobody walks.
20:47Well, let us walk it again. Here is what I would ask of you. If you have a shower door
20:53gone cloudy that you
20:55had near given up on, try this before you do anything drastic. Vinegar and a soak for the film, the
21:03fine steel wool for the
21:04spots, and see if that glass does not come back clear as the day it went in. And then come
21:11down to
21:11the comments and tell me how it went. Tell me how old the door is, and how bad it had
21:17gotten, and whether
21:18it came back clear for you. I read them, and other folks read them, and everyone who reports back gives

21:47plugged so it sprays crooked. The kettle furred up inside with scale. There are plain, cheap ways to
21:55clear the mineral off every one of those and get your faucets shining and your shower head spraying straight
22:02again, and I will show you the lot of it. So come back for that one. So get your vinegar

22:09soak. Get the right fine steel wool and mind the grade. Keep a squeegee on a hook and use it,
22:16and that
22:17cloudy glass will be clear again and stay clear, for pennies, by your own hand. The people who built this
22:25country with their hands knew that, and we are only just starting to remember it.
