On August 9, the streets of Brussels come alive for the annual Meyboom celebration, a tradition dating back to 1308. The day includes a colourful procession with giant figures, musicians, dancers, traditional costumes and, of course, the famous Meyboom tree. 🎺🎭
The highlight is the planting of the tree, which must take place before 5 PM. According to tradition, if Brussels fails to plant it in time, Leuven wins! πŸŒ³β°πŸ˜‚
The Meyboom tradition is connected to the centuries-old rivalry between Brussels and Leuven and has become an important part of Brussels’ cultural identity. It is also recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. πŸ‡§πŸ‡ͺ
Come along and experience the atmosphere, music, parade and unique traditions of Meyboom 2026 in the streets of Brussels!
