Charm offensive: Molenbeek's street festival sets city sights on becoming EU culture capital in 2030

Molenfest2025 is a multidisciplinary festival celebrating Molenbeek's diverse community. It's part of the Brussels neighbourhood's drive to change its image, that's often associated with violent crime, as it bids to become the European Capital of Culture in 2030 (ECOC2030).

00:00A multidisciplinary festival celebrating a diverse community takes place in Molenbeek until September 7th.
00:15This is how Molenfest 2025 presents itself on the streets of a Brussels neighborhood associated with violence,
00:22including having housed perpetrators of terrorist attacks a decade ago.
00:26This second edition of the festival is also used to reinforce its candidacy for European Capital of Culture 2030.
00:34The dream started in 2016 after the attacks of Paris and Brussels.
00:40Molenbeek has been known in the whole world.
00:44But this candidate is the opportunity to show another Molenbeek.
00:48A Molenbeek rich in its diversity, in its youth, in its culture, in its art.
00:54Renowned artists and mediators lead workshops with the community to create costumes, choreography, music, etc.
01:02that will be used in parades as well as dance, circus, theatre and other performances.
01:07There are cultural expressions of a lot of communities, of a lot of young people.
01:12So the living art is very present, but the visual art also, the cinema.
01:18What is the most important is that there are a lot of projects in public space,
01:23a lot of projects that directly involve the inhabitants.
01:27They are very often in free, intergenerational projects.
01:31Molenbeek has about 95,000 inhabitants from 140 nationalities and 40% of them are under 20 years old.
