Hundreds of passengers were left stranded in the Sicilian port city of Catania on Wednesday as flights got suspended due to volcanic activity on the nearby Mount Etna.
The airport will remain closed at least until 4 pm local time on Thursday, Aug. 13, the airport's website read.
The airport of Comiso, in the southern Ragusa province, also remained closed due to falling volcanic ash, according to the authorities.
As Sicily is a major Summer destination, hundreds of passengers remain stranded on the island.
