Transcript
00:00You need to create million-dollar looks using a bunch of junk from the 99-cent store.
00:07Welcome to Ms. Mojo. And today, we're deciding which retired drag race challenges we want to
00:12see make a return, and which challenges already done had theirses. And no, the Everybody Loves
00:17Puppets mini-challenge will not be making an appearance. If you saw season 18, you know why.
00:22Ladykins, you are all rotten. But one of you... Actually, no, you are all equally rotten.
00:36Introduced in All Stars 2, the talent competition was a great addition. It was a chance for the
00:41queens to showcase their unique talents in a way that other maxi-challenges might not let them.
00:52The same parts. The same parts. The same parts. Queens brought some truly wild skills to the
01:04main stage as a result. Once it became a faithful part of every season, though, it became clear
01:08that there are only so many lip-syncs and goofy novelty numbers you can watch before the originality
01:13drains away. The talent show has become more about trying to game the system than showing
01:24the judges a unique talent. Lip-syncs stunt showcases start to run together after a while,
01:29and there's already a place for that in the competition. It's called The Bottom 2.
01:38Number 5. Comeback. Original Snatch Game.
01:41Hey, Ma. Lady Gaga's finally gone too far. Last week, she wore a dress made of blank.
01:47Boo! Who cares? I'm so sick and tired of hearing about that bitch. Hey, Ma's world.
01:54The Celebrity Impersonation Challenge has been one of the show's perennial favorites.
01:58In recent years, though, the Snatch Game has taken some detours.
02:01It started on All-Stars when the show introduced the Snatch Game of Love format,
02:05a parody of the dating game.
02:07I never liked you and Bobby together.
02:09Ha-ha! Then dropped my cigarette.
02:12My lord, if I was a car, RuPaul, I would be all the man that I need. Thank you, RuPaul.
02:19Thank you.
02:20Season 18 saw the first time a new format hit the main series.
02:23We're hoping that the Snatch Game of Love Island variation is not here to stay.
02:27Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. Hold everything.
02:31Zane and Froy, can I come too?
02:36Oh my god.
02:37We thought you'd never ask.
02:39The original version is great because it gives the queens free reign to take jokes where they want,
02:43without the distraction of the dating show framework.
02:46RuPaul's fill-in-the-blank questions are harder to plan for,
02:48and Snatch Game should be sink or swim.
02:51Or she bangs him, which is exactly what I'd like to do to most of these women here on this
02:55panel.
02:57Except for this one down here, Miss Donatella, she looks like a skeleton made out of beef jerky.
03:04I love you, Justin Bieber.
03:06Number 4. Sashay Away.
03:08Rue Mix Challenge.
03:19Season 2 of All Stars introduced the challenge that tasked the contestants with writing and performing their own rap verses
03:25to RuPaul songs.
03:26It's understandable they'd keep bringing it back.
03:29Red You, Rote You is probably one of the best things to come out of a Drag Race Maxi Challenge.
03:33I'm a squashing hot mess in a skin-tight dress.
03:35That's a rash, not a herpes sore.
03:38Lemon in a squeeze.
03:39Dosayetsky in the sheets.
03:40Baby, are you ready for this cold war?
03:42However, the Ru Mix Maxi Challenge has made appearances in nearly every season since,
03:47often with diminishing returns.
03:49Frankly, we can only hear so many lyrics about snatching wigs and snatching crowns before it starts to feel repetitive.
03:55Drag is a crown to lock me up.
03:57I'm gonna wear my crown to scrub my stuff.
03:59This fight is for equality.
04:00We got a superpower, you and me.
04:03Seasons 17 and 18 ditched the Ru Mix altogether, and we'd be fine if the trend continued.
04:08Number 4. Come Back.
04:09Drag Movie Sequels.
04:11First days!
04:12How dare you!
04:14I was a dancer!
04:19I don't know what the hell you did in Vegas, but it sure wasn't dancing.
04:23Why do a remake when you can do a shequel?
04:26The Queens of All-Stars Season 2 breathed new life into several classics,
04:29appearing in parodic sequels to movies like Showgirls and Thelma and Louise.
04:33If it isn't that handsome Brad Pitt lookalike that stole all our money!
04:38What are you doing here, BJ?
04:40You come back to give us that money you stole from us, baby?
04:44With interest?
04:46Despite some choice moments from its first and only appearance,
04:49the Drag Movie Sequels Challenge has yet to make a return.
04:51It's a shame, because there are so many options.
04:54We want to see dragged-up, queen-centric sequels to Mean Girls,
04:57The Devil Wears Prada, or Valley of the Dolls.
04:59This one could be the gift that keeps on giving if they ever bring it back.
05:03Guess who's in a wheelchair now, Bland?
05:08Just kidding.
05:09You are!
05:11Baby JJ?
05:12You know I haven't been able to use my leg since the accident.
05:15Number three, Sashay Away, RDR Live.
05:19Sketch comedy's been done on Drag Race before,
05:21but the breezy, one-take live nature of RDR Live seemed like a welcome change to the challenge lineup.
05:26I'm Tangerine.
05:28And I'm Margarita.
05:29We've been best friends since middle school,
05:31when we lost our virginity to the same guy.
05:35Different nights.
05:36But it was all backdoor stuff, so it doesn't really count.
05:40First appearing on All-Stars 8, it made a pretty successful jump to the main series for season 16.
05:45Since then, its zany and fast-paced mini-variety show format has only worn thin.
05:50Do you feel like you've been overlooked in queer history?
05:54Oh, God, yes!
05:56All folks want to talk about is who threw me.
06:00But what about me?
06:03Seasons 17 and 18 saw less successful attempts.
06:06The big problem with the sketches here is the writing.
06:08There's an art to this kind of comedy,
06:10and even the most talented queens can't make some of these clumsy jokes land.
06:14First things first, your proportions are fine,
06:18but you gotta stop relying on that body.
06:22I'm dressed like my idol, Mizzuana.
06:26Number 3.
06:26Come Back.
06:27Music Video Challenge.
06:28During the first eight seasons,
06:30Drag Race finalists were put through one final trial.
06:33This last challenge would have them appearing alongside RuPaul
06:36in the music video for her latest single.
06:44It was shoved aside for the lip-sync smackdown for The Crown
06:47and the RuMix Challenge later on,
06:49but it's time for the music video to make a comeback.
06:51They would prove themselves in several areas,
06:54including lip-syncing, posing, acting, and dancing.
07:03It was like the great equalizer,
07:05highlighting different queens' varying strengths
07:07and helping make the case for who and who would not make it to the finals.
07:10The realness, not the realness.
07:14Catchy, patchy, touchy, touchy flavor of this fever.
07:17Number 2.
07:18Sashay Away.
07:19Lip-sync Lollapurusa Smackdown.
07:21Every season, the queens compete in a bracket-style lip-sync tournament.
07:25I'm going crazy just to let you know
07:29I'm going crazy just to let you know
07:30I'm going crazy for you
07:31I'm the last one, baby
07:33I've been around, I'm locking up tonight
07:36The lip-sync Lollapurusa has served very different purposes over the years.
07:41Sometimes, the winner receives a separate cash prize.
07:43Other times, the loser of the competition goes home.
07:46It's even been a way for Eliminated Queens to win re-entry into the season.
07:50Latrice Royale, shantay you stay.
07:59Latrice Royale is back in the game!
08:02Welcome back to the competition.
08:04The Lollapurusa has given us some great moments,
08:06but the inconsistency and the choice of songs often leaves viewers wanting.
08:11Lackluster smackdowns in recent years might be a sign that the formula has run stale
08:15and might need to go on the shelf for a while.
08:26Number two, come back.
08:28Makeover challenge with the other queens.
08:30This is a makeover challenge, and I have been paired with a Scottish caveman.
08:36That's right, each of you needs to turn your partner into your drag doppelganger.
08:41How a queen paints her face is very personal.
08:43When the queens aren't making over strangers, members of the crew, or family members,
08:48they're sometimes paired with each other.
08:50Watching them put their faces on another queen could be an emotional rollercoaster,
08:54or it could be a hilarious disaster.
08:56Tina!
08:59What did you learn from Rosé?
09:01I learned that even after you take a dress in, you still have to add shoulder pads
09:06so she can get these beautiful line back her shoulders.
09:09Season 7 probably had the best version of this challenge.
09:12The queens were asked to make over an eliminated contestant who would be welcomed back into
09:16the competition if their partner won.
09:18Whatever the stakes, it is easily one of the most entertaining challenges ever featured on
09:23the show.
09:23We're doing this weird routine where she's just pissing me off and she won't cooperate.
09:30I'm taking every single opportunity to reach for the joke.
09:33I need to show the judges that they made a mistake when they cut me the first time.
09:36Number 1.
09:37Sashay Away.
09:38Makeover Challenge.
09:39We're not sure what RuPaul means by drag family resemblance, and at this point, we're
09:43too annoyed to ask.
09:44You know, Michelle's going to be looking for a family resemblance.
09:47She doesn't really take to these highfalutin concepts too much.
09:52Well, I think what's good is that the preppy girls are mean.
09:55The punk girls are mean.
09:56So it's like we have the same face, but like the opposite aesthetic.
10:00Near the end of a season, queens will be tasked with turning another drag newbie into their
10:04drag daughter.
10:05While we've gotten some absolute gold over the years, if season 18 proved anything, it's
10:10that this challenge is the one that's in desperate need of a makeover.
10:13You know I'm going to tell you I'm not getting family resemblance.
10:16The style of the dress is different.
10:19The jewelry is different.
10:21You have to give us something that would make us believe that you're related apart from
10:25the same hair color.
10:26From inconsistent criteria to wonky judging, this one has been on the chopping block for
10:31a long time.
10:32No more makeover challenges until we figure out what's going on.
10:35I thought you kids did a really cute job in family resemblance.
10:40What could have been a little bit stronger was the fun on the stage.
10:43I felt like you were both doing something separate, and you needed to have that chemistry
10:47to keep you together.
10:50If you love games, be sure to check out WatchMojo's new game, Terrible Influence.
10:55Just launched for purchase at TerribleInfluence.com.
10:58Terrible Influence is a satirical board game about the dark side of fame from the writer
11:02of the most popular girls in school and us, WatchMojo.
11:05Boom.
11:06I can make an apology video.
11:08Oh, you so would.
11:09Click on the link in the description to check out the game and be the first to play Terrible
11:13Influence.
11:18You need to create million-dollar looks using a bunch of junk from the 99-cent store.
11:26Now, you can use your own hair, heels, and undergarments, but everything else that meets
11:31the eye should be bargain-bin-beautiful.
11:36These days, drag race is a major investment.
11:38Constantly raising the bar for fashions, the queens spend thousands on their runway packages.
11:43But there's something to be said for good old-fashioned drag ingenuity.
11:46The drag-on-a-dime challenge appeared in the very first episode ever, and it really needs
11:51to make a comeback.
11:52I've got headpieces and headdresses and 16 pairs of shoes, 22 outfits, things with Versace
11:58buckles on them.
11:59And our challenge is create a fabulous outfit from some of the ugliest, tackiest, most horrible
12:07thrift store clothing that...
12:09It forces the queens to design looks based on what they can find and where their own
12:13skills lie.
12:13Anyone can throw on a beautifully designed garment.
12:16Not everyone can make one.
12:18It demonstrates taste level like no other design challenge can.
12:21I am serving queen of hearts, queen of cards, queen of structure, queen of...
12:26Bitch, is that hair made out of plastic?
12:28It is!
12:30Hashtag stunning.
12:31Which drag race challenges need to make their grand return?
12:34Tell us in the comments.
