US credit card debt rose to $1.26 trillion as higher costs pushed delinquencies higher and household debt reached $18.8 trillion.

00:03Americans' credit card debt rose by $21 billion in the second quarter to $126 trillion,
00:09just below the record $1.28 trillion set in the fourth quarter of last year, according to ABC News.
00:16Rising consumer spending and higher prices for essentials such as groceries and gas
00:21have contributed to growing card balances. The share of credit card balances more than 90 days,
00:27delinquent increased from 7.6% in mid-2022 to 12.8% in early 2026.
00:35New York Fed researchers said households living paycheck to paycheck can quickly fall behind
00:40after a financial setback, while higher delinquency rates also reflect older outstanding debts rather
00:46than new credit card charges. Auto loan debt also reached a record $1.71 trillion while home equity
00:53line balances increased. Total U.S. household debt stands at $18.8 trillion.
