00:00What's going on, everybody?
00:01Welcome back to another video.
00:02In this series, I show you how easy it is
00:04to manipulate and lie with data.
00:12Now, I don't know about you,
00:13but when I'm watching the news
00:15and it says something like,
00:16the US is the bigger exporter of this product,
00:19then it has this little asterisk down at the bottom
00:21and it says, not including Asia.
00:23And I'm like, well, that's kind of a big thing
00:25to leave out of the data.
00:26You're basically cherry picking your data.
00:28And so in this video,
00:30I'm gonna show you how easy it is to just omit
00:32and select the data that you want
00:34to easily change and manipulate the data.
00:37Let's not waste any time.
00:38Let's jump onto my screen and take a look.
00:39All right, so let's take a look at this data right here.
00:42Now, we have a stock price, we have a year,
00:45and we're taking a look at the stock price over time.
00:49So we have this nice little line graph
00:51and just goes per year, here's what we're looking at.
00:53And so what we can conclude from this
00:55is that it peaked in 2018.
00:572015, it's been going down.
00:59And anybody who invests in this is a schmuck
01:02because they're losing tons of money.
01:04I mean, it's gone from about 150 down to 90.
01:08It's like 30 or 40% of its value.
01:10And you just, you lost money.
01:12But does this necessarily represent this stock as a whole?
01:16I don't like to invest in stocks
01:18for a short period of time.
01:19I'm just, I like to hold it forever.
01:20I like to hold it for 20 years.
01:22And so this may not be true for everybody,
01:24but it's very easy to just look at this
01:28and conclude that this is a bad stock
01:30and you shouldn't be investing in it
01:32and you should never invest in it, right?
01:33But let's take a look at the cherry-picked good data
01:37and the cherry-picked bad data.
01:39If we come over here and we take a look,
01:41we actually have a lot more data.
01:43This stock was listed back in 2011 at $30.
01:47And so anyone who invested a long time ago
01:50is still making a ton of money from this stock.
01:54And so now we're representing all of the data
01:56going back as far as we can.
01:58And this is gonna give a lot more context
02:01to this stock as a whole.
02:03In this other chart, we really have cherry-picked this.
02:07And all cherry-picking means
02:08is that we've intentionally left out some data.
02:12Now, sometimes, and if I'm being honest,
02:13that's a perfectly fine thing to do.
02:15You don't always have to include all the data.
02:17You can get a little bit too cumbersome.
02:19But it depends on the narrative
02:21and what your end goal is
02:23for exploring and looking at this data.
02:25Because as we all know,
02:272020 was not a great year for most stocks
02:30and it wasn't a great year for a lot of companies.
02:33And so if we just look at these years
02:35as representative of the stock as a whole,
02:37it's not gonna be as accurate as if we had shown.
02:41Like, they've had a really great track record
02:43kind of up until 2020.
02:44And then their stock took a hit.
02:46It's very possible that these last few years
02:48are an outlier due to some economic conditions
02:51that are out of their control.
02:52But over the long term, it could go back up.
02:55And so cherry-picking the data
02:56and only showing what you wanna show,
02:58maybe to fit a specific narrative of,
03:00oh, this is a bad stock to pick.
03:02You shouldn't invest in this company.
03:03They, well, that may be true,
03:05but it also could just be
03:06that you're cherry-picking your data
03:07and they actually have really good fundamentals.
03:09And something happened here
03:11that's hurt them temporarily
03:12before they start coming back
03:14and they're a good stock again.
03:16Now, just this concept as a whole.
03:18Again, I've been dogging the news in this series,
03:20but I've seen this in the news
03:22where they will intentionally omit specific data
03:25to fit whatever narrative they're trying to push.
03:28And I don't want you to be that guy or girl.
03:30I don't want you to be the person
03:32who intentionally omits a specific year
03:35and just is like, oh, that's not important.
03:36No, the data is important.
03:38The data is there for a reason.
03:40So don't omit or cherry-pick data
03:42that you don't wanna show
03:43just to fit whatever you're trying to do.
03:45It is much better to represent it as a whole
03:48almost all the time.
03:49So I hope that was helpful.
03:51Don't make this mistake, okay?
03:52Just be conscious, be aware of this.
