Marvel threw out the original Avengers script before The Avengers (2012) was filmed. What was inside Zak Penn’s discarded screenplay, what did Joss Whedon change, and how different was the MCU’s first superhero team-up almost going to be?
In this complete Avengers original-script breakdown, we separate three stories that are often incorrectly combined: Zak Penn’s rejected Avengers screenplay, Joss Whedon’s abandoned early drafts and the deleted scenes removed after filming.
What changed in the original Avengers script?
Zak Penn developed The Avengers while Marvel’s Phase One movies and casting decisions were still changing. He initially reduced Thor’s role because Marvel was uncertain how a mythological hero would fit beside Iron Man and Hulk. Thor’s importance increased after Chris Hemsworth was cast, while Loki entered Penn’s story considerably later than he does in the finished movie.
Penn’s screenplay also placed Hawkeye in the capture-and-interrogation situation eventually given to Black Widow. Another scene showed the heroes trying to lift Mjolnir, an idea Marvel later used in a different context during Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Was Edward Norton originally going to play Hulk in The Avengers?
Early development expected continuity with The Incredible Hulk, which starred Edward Norton as Bruce Banner. Marvel ultimately cast Mark Ruffalo before The Avengers entered production. That was a genuine casting change, but no complete Edward Norton version of The Avengers was filmed.
Why did Joss Whedon rewrite The Avengers?
After reading Penn’s screenplay, Whedon told Kevin Feige that Marvel needed to begin again. He created a five-page treatment and rebuilt the story while preserving Marvel’s central requirements: Loki as the antagonist, conflict between the heroes, the team breaking apart and a major final battle.
Was Wasp originally in The Avengers?
When Scarlett Johansson’s availability appeared uncertain, Whedon developed a version centred heavily on Wasp and considered Zooey Deschanel for the character. Another abandoned version included Ezekiel Stane, the son of Iron Man villain Obadiah Stane. These ideas belonged to Whedon’s early rewrites, not Zak Penn’s original screenplay.
Did Marvel film a deleted version of The Avengers?
No complete alternate Avengers movie was filmed. Scenes such as Steve Rogers struggling to adjust to modern New York were shot and later removed, but those production cuts should not automatically be treated as material from Penn’s screenplay.
