00:05And I was really open to, I was trying anything and everyone, anything anyone threw at me.
00:10It was a particular difficult time.
00:13I needed rebooting.
00:14I needed to wake the f*** up in some areas.
00:17That was Brad Pitt last year on Armchair Expert,
00:21admitting he needed to wake the f*** up about his drinking problem.
00:24At the time, he called his first AA meeting amazing.
00:27But now Pitt is opening up about his sobriety journey and his messy family rift
00:32in a new cover story for Esquire.
00:34Pitt said with a laugh,
00:36I was sober for seven years and then I got back off the wagon.
00:40The surprising reveal came up organically after he offered the interviewer wine during their sit-down.
00:46The actor explained he can have a few glasses but can't have a lot,
00:50calling his alcohol use more restrained and professional.
00:53He confessed,
00:54I got overconfident a couple of times, went yep, nope, not good for me, not in big quantities.
01:01Elsewhere in the interview, Pitt revealed he felt suicidal while navigating his split a decade ago from his ex-wife,
01:08Angelina Jolie.
01:09I've never been suicidal except for one little period and in that one little period,
01:14I just thought, I just couldn't, just didn't see a way out.
01:18The pain was so oppressive that I wasn't going to act on this,
01:21but I could feel, I could feel the cold steel of the bullet in my head and it felt like
01:27relief.
01:27In that dark moment, Pitt said his survival instincts immediately kicked in,
01:32before adding,
01:33this shit ain't easy and you're talking to a guy who won the lottery.
01:37The F1 star quit drinking in 2016 after an alleged drunken plane incident,
01:42during which Jolie claimed in court docs that he physically harmed her and one of their kids.
01:47The Hollywood exes share six children, ages 24 to 18,
01:51and four of the six have since taken steps to drop Pitt from their last names.
01:56In 2019, Pitt first revealed he was sober and joined a 12-step program.
02:01That same year, he and Jolie were declared legally single.
02:04However, their divorce dragged on for years,
02:07tied up with their French winery, Chateau Miraval.
02:10Pitt's new girlfriend, Inez de Ramon,
02:12has been credited with helping him finally settle their divorce last year.
02:16In 2020, Pitt publicly credited Bradley Cooper for helping him get sober.
02:20They were even spotted bro-ing out together at the 2021 U.S. Open.
02:25The Hollywood pals were dubbed the Brads.
