CTP (S4EAugSpecial2) What A Tandem Bicycle Teaches About Not Being Done
We talk with author Terry M. Brown about going from “I haven’t ridden in 40 years” to riding a tandem bicycle across the United States and writing Ten Little Rules for a Double Budded Adventure. We dig into the real-life logistics, the weather scares, the COVID curveballs, and the mindset shift that turns a huge goal into lasting confidence.
• Terry’s “Genesis story,” from Greece to Ohio to North Carolina
• deciding to commit to a coast-to-coast tandem bike ride
• the life lessons behind Ten Little Rules for a Double Budded Adventure
• route memories like Mackinac Island and problem-solving on the road
• staying safe through rain, hail, and severe storm forecasts
• making food work during COVID with limited options
• why a shorter Maine lighthouse trip feels more purely fun
• Terry’s wider writing career, upcoming Peg Unhinged, and a quipu-inspired idea

01:38Joining me today is Terry M. Brown, author of Ten Little Rules for Double-Butted Adventure.
01:50This will be fun.
01:51And it's Terry M, Terry, T-E-R-I, M, as in mediocre.
01:59Just, it's a joke.
02:01It's a joke.
02:03Yes, her middle initial is M, though, but no, it isn't for mediocre.
02:09Brown, B-R-O-W-N.
02:11Welcome, Terry.
02:12Thank you so much for having me.
02:14M is for magnificent.
02:16It's Terry Magnificent.
02:18So, just so you know.
02:19Yeah.
02:20Well, see, and I joke with all my guests, but Terry and I know each other.
02:25I've been on her show.
02:27Have you been on my show yet before?
02:29No, this is the first time.
02:31Oh, I thought you were returning.
02:33No.
02:35350 episodes plus countless co-hosting Savage Dunfilter and countless as a guest on other shows.
02:44It's like I can't keep them all straight anymore.
02:47I get it.
02:48I get it.
02:50I'm like on a thousand podcasts all over the internet currently.
02:57My own co-hosting NS guests.
03:00Anyway, we're not here to discuss me.
03:03Yes.
03:06Since this is your first time, even though I thought you were returning, explain to this
03:12audience the proverbial, as I like to joke, Christian show, right?
03:18Proverbs.
03:19Proverbial first question.
03:21Where were you born and raised?
03:23Your Genesis story.
03:25Where were you born and raised?
03:27Where are you now?
03:29Places you, significant places you've been in between, that sort of thing.
03:33Admit to you how many years in jail for what?
03:37Yes.
03:38Again, we're joking, people.
03:40Yes, I was going to say, no.
03:41For the benefit of your transcript, we're laughing.
03:45That is a joke.
03:47So, yeah.
03:48So, I was actually born in Athens, Greece.
03:50My dad was in the Air Force.
03:52And so, I was born in Greece.
03:54I did the major growing up years in Ohio.
03:59When I was 15, the middle of my freshman year in high school, my parents decided to move
04:04to North Carolina.
04:06At the time, I hated them for that.
04:08I could not believe that they had rooted me and just, you know, taken me to this.
04:13So, you went from being a Buckeye to a Tar Heel.
04:17To a Tar Heel.
04:18And really, so I moved in 1979, and we moved to the small town of Pinehurst, where the entire
04:25county had one stoplight.
04:27And I had been living in Canton, Ohio, where, as a teenage girl, I could hop on the city bus.
04:34Yeah.
04:35Well, we would hop on the bus and head to the mall for the day.
04:38And that wasn't possible anymore, where we lived.
04:41And so, I really, really hated my parents.
04:44I could not believe they had done this to me.
04:47Yet, here it is, how many years later?
04:51Almost 50 years later.
04:53Oh, you just doxed your age.
04:55That's okay.
04:56I don't mind.
04:57I'm fine.
04:57But here it is, you know, not quite 50 years later, and I'm still in North Carolina.
05:03So, I absolutely love it here.
05:05It's all on you.
05:07Yeah.
05:07Yeah.
05:07I'm now on the, I live at the coast, and yeah, I love, I love where I live.
05:15There's been, like, all kinds of adventures in between, but North Carolina is definitely
05:21what I call home now.
05:23All right.
05:27And keeping with the Christian puns, right?
05:30What was the genesis of the book?
05:34Yeah.
05:35So, it's called Ten Little Rules for a Double-Buddled Adventure, and it is a memoir.
05:40Do I need to put a PG-13 label on this show?
05:44No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
05:46So, what it is, is it's really an inspirational memoir, and my husband and I rode across the
05:53country from the coast of Oregon to Washington, D.C. on a tandem bicycle, and this is life lessons
06:01I learned while doing this huge adventure.
06:04And for me, this was more than just, hey, look, this lady cycled across the U.S.
06:10At the time that I met Bruce in 2018, I had not been on a bicycle in 40 years.
06:19So, when he said to me, I've always wanted to ride across the United States on a bicycle,
06:24I had been wanting to do a really big adventure.
06:28I wanted to do something that kind of proved that I wasn't done, that my life wasn't over.
06:33And I looked at him and said, so, are you going to talk about this forever, or are you
06:37actually going to do it?
06:38And he said, no, I want to do it.
06:40And I said, count me in.
06:41Well, that's crazy.
06:42I hadn't been on a bicycle in 40 years.
06:44And so, about a year and a half later, we got on a tandem bicycle and rode across the
06:50United States.
06:50And I learned a lot about myself and life on that trip.
06:54And that's what this book is.
06:56I hope you avoid, well, I think it's safe to say you avoided Detroit.
07:00You're still alive.
07:01Yes, yes, we did.
07:03We did go through, where did we go through?
07:06We did go through Michigan, but we went up.
07:10We went UP and kind of over.
07:12And then we went all the way kind of down and around and then went through like Toledo,
07:17Ohio.
07:18So, we just kind of did this whole loop around that way.
07:21Interesting.
07:22And Tuledoo, as we call it here in Michigan.
07:25Tuledoo, Ohio.
07:27Oh, yes.
07:27Tuledoo.
07:28So, did you stare at Mackinac Island from the Straits?
07:32So, we actually took a boat over and enjoyed a day there.
07:38And it was really beautiful.
07:40Isn't it lovely?
07:41It was, yeah.
07:42It was absolutely gorgeous.
07:43Anyone got a chance to visit Mackinac Island.
07:46Yeah.
07:47It's expensive.
07:49Right.
07:49Especially if you book the Grand Hotel.
07:52But if you can manage to afford to book a stay at the Grand Hotel, where somewhere in time
08:00with Christopher Reeves and Jane Seymour were filmed, you really want to do it.
08:06Although, get ready to roast.
08:10There's no air conditioning in that hotel.
08:12So, what we actually did was we stayed in a campground, took the boat over, spent the
08:18whole day there, and enjoyed ourselves, and then took the boat back and stayed at the
08:22campground because we were, you know, definitely.
08:25Yes.
08:26Well, and we were also doing this huge trip across the United States.
08:30And you certainly, every time there's something beautiful, if you spent a lot of money, you
08:34have to kind of, like, figure out whether you're going to do it.
08:37And then, of course, being on a bicycle, we weren't allowed to cross that bridge.
08:42They used to let people ride across it, but not anymore.
08:45And so, we found some-
08:47They had to put the bike on a bus?
08:50Well, we actually, it was during COVID.
08:53There were no buses.
08:55But we found a very nice person at the campground with a big pickup truck.
09:02And they stuck the bicycle in the back of the pickup and took us across.
09:05So, it worked out really well for us.
09:11And the bicycle built for two thing, also, since I mentioned Somewhere in Time as the
09:18movie, oh, what a great movie.
09:20Have you seen that movie?
09:22Yes, I have.
09:22Yeah.
09:23Another movie I highly recommend came out this year.
09:26You might still be able to find it in theaters or video on demand or streaming pay-per-view.
09:35Kevin James' Solo Mio.
09:38I've not seen that one.
09:40Angel Film Studio.
09:42Yeah, yeah.
09:42Romantic comedy that, you know, came out around Valentine's Day.
09:48Oh, what a great, fun, funny, and a bicycle built for two jokes are built in.
09:57Oh, I'll have to.
09:58Yeah, I'll have to go see that one then.
09:59That sounds good.
10:04Oh, just the way my ADHD, OCD brain works.
10:08I just, oh, so stupid.
10:11Yeah, right.
10:12Exactly.
10:13Up.
10:13The movie, right.
10:14Squirrel.
10:16No, squirrel.
10:16Absolutely.
10:17I love that movie, too.
10:19What a great movie.
10:20Up.
10:21Yes.
10:22Oh, anyway.
10:25Now, what book number?
10:27This is not your first book.
10:30Oh, no, no, no.
10:31So, I have three novels that came out before this.
10:36Then I had a children's book that came out after this.
10:39And I have another novel coming out next month.
10:42So, I'm just, and then.
10:44Well, full disclosure, we're recording March the 25th.
10:49Don't know when this will air.
10:51So, when you're saying next month, you mean April.
10:55April.
10:55So, April 21st.
10:57April 21st.
10:58I'll have a new one come out called Pagan Hinged.
11:00And then on top of that, I also have a short story in three different anthologies that are
11:06also out.
11:06So, I have a wide range of things that I do when I write.
11:10Yeah.
11:10I'm working on another right now, too, that I'm expecting will be a Kindle 99 cent short
11:19story exclusive that I'm planning to release in May.
11:24I don't want to release anything on April Fool's Month.
11:29Really?
11:29Oh, no.
11:30You were willing to do that?
11:31Well, so, here's the thing.
11:33It's called Pagan Hinged.
11:35It is about a woman who's going through menopause.
11:37And it is a very funny tongue-in-cheek.
11:40It's set at the beach.
11:42I live at the beach.
11:43And starting in April is when everybody's coming here.
11:47I needed to get it out.
11:49Maybe it should have come out on April 1st.
11:52Well, potentially, because Peg is kind of losing it a little bit.
11:57That's why we call her Peg Unhinged.
11:59So, it's a good funny story.
12:01I think people will enjoy it.
12:02Yeah.
12:03My book, part of my Life and Living series, is going to be about loss.
12:08So, I didn't want it to come out.
12:10That's probably not it.
12:11April.
12:12Yeah.
12:12Valentine's Month, bad idea.
12:15Yeah.
12:15April, Fool's and Tax Month, bad idea.
12:20So, I would...
12:21Went for May.
12:22Went for May.
12:22Yeah.
12:23Even though it's killing me, because it's basically done.
12:25It's like, I want to reach it now.
12:28But patience is not one of my virtues.
12:33Okay.
12:33Okay.
12:34Okay.
12:37So, have you got a next in mind?
12:41So, I'm actually going to be at a writer's retreat.
12:45Don't give a title, of course.
12:45No, no.
12:46And I don't have one.
12:47I don't have one.
12:48And the reason I don't have one is I'm terrible at titles.
12:51It takes me forever to come up with a title.
12:53I write the whole book.
12:55I've done tons of editing.
12:57And I'm still struggling with the title.
12:59Because titles are just...
13:00To me, I don't know how you're supposed to sum up all that you've done in this tiny little title.
13:06It's very hard.
13:07It's good to brainstorm with others what a title should be.
13:11And I suggest in How to Write a Book and Get It Published.
13:16Like, I'm...
13:17The one in May I'm calling Lost as a working title.
13:21Oh, I always have a working title.
13:24But it doesn't mean anything.
13:25That can be shared, but you never want to give away your real title until the book's ready to drop.
13:34So, the one I'm...
13:36You know, I'm a pantser.
13:37So, I very much write by the seat of my pants.
13:40And I usually have, like, a very vague idea.
13:43Maybe a character.
13:45Not much more.
13:46So, the one that I'm thinking of, it's a dual timeline.
13:49It's historical fiction and present day.
13:52There is something, it's called a quipu.
13:55Q-U-I-P-U.
13:57It is South American...
13:59I've never heard that word before, yeah.
14:01Okay.
14:01South American Inca, you know, back with the Incans.
14:05They would take kind of like macrame knots.
14:09And they would tie these knots.
14:11And for a long time, historians thought that it had to do with accounting.
14:15How many alpaca we had and how many...
14:18Right?
14:18Well, I read an article about a year ago.
14:22They now believe that some of these quipu, that's what they're called, these knotted things,
14:27that they told stories, narrative stories.
14:31Oh, my mind just jumped on that.
14:34And so, I have an idea of a modern day anthropologist.
14:39I have her as adopted.
14:41She knows that she is of South American ancestry.
14:46And because of that, gets into looking at South American type things.
14:51Don't say too much more.
14:53We don't want to give story plot points away.
14:55No, there's...
14:56And I don't even know enough to do...
14:58Yeah.
14:58I don't even know enough.
14:59Someone will run through AI and try to steal it ahead of you.
15:04Yes, exactly.
15:05Today with AI, cheaters.
15:07Yeah.
15:08Right.
15:08So, it's kind of that.
15:10And then we'll be going back in time.
15:12And also seeing the quipu from that.
15:16I don't even really know where it's going.
15:18But I think it's going to be really cool.
15:21I'm really excited to sit down and just, like, see where my mind goes on this one.
15:27Yeah.
15:27Well, you use double-butted in this one.
15:30So, maybe it could be quipu-poo?
15:32Yeah.
15:34Sorry.
15:35Couldn't avoid the potty humor.
15:37Yes.
15:38Probably not.
15:39Probably not.
15:40No, you don't want to steal that from me?
15:43No, no.
15:44I'll let you have that one.
15:45That's good.
15:46Oh, thank you so much.
15:48You're so welcome.
15:49For the benefit of the transcript, again, we are laughing.
15:53We're laughing, yes.
15:53This is fun.
15:55This is humor.
15:56You've got to keep it such a humor, people.
16:01Oh, goodness.
16:06I'm sure the people don't really care, but I do.
16:11How's the weather been?
16:13You know, I live in North Carolina on the coast, and we had, for North Carolina on the coast, a
16:20very cold winter.
16:21I'm sure it was nothing compared to what you went through.
16:23So, we're not going to do a comparison, but just to give you an idea, I live on the coast
16:31of North Carolina.
16:32It typically does not snow here.
16:34If it snows, it is a dusting, and we typically see snow once every 15 years or so.
16:41I mean, it's just rare.
16:42I had almost 14 inches in my backyard.
16:45Holy cow.
16:46It was just, you know, and then on the day that it finished snowing, typically here, it snows, and the
16:54next day, it's 60 degrees, and it all melts.
16:57I mean, that's just the way it goes.
16:58Well, we kept it.
17:00It was below freezing for three days, and below freezing, like the day it finished snowing, it didn't get above
17:0724 that day, and it was just crazy.
17:10So, the fact that it has warmed up, and I have been walking out on the beach barefoot, is just
17:16fabulous.
17:17So, the weather here has been really nice.
17:19I'm happy for that.
17:21Today here, again, for the benefit behind the scenes, today we're recording is March the 26th.
17:30The temperature here is 60-ish, but we got thunderstorms rolling in.
17:36Yeah, well, I mean, it is springtime.
17:38You should expect that in the spring.
17:40But last week, or was it the week before?
17:44Recently, this month, the Upper Peninsula got three feet of snow.
17:50Yes.
17:51Three feet.
17:53Yeah.
17:54That was after a day, a couple days before that, we had like a 70-degree day.
18:01We thought, oh, relief, spring is here.
18:04No, no.
18:05No, you always, that's called faux spring, and then you get second winter.
18:10There's always second winter.
18:12So, yeah.
18:12And we usually get second, third, fourth winter.
18:15Third and fourth winter, yeah.
18:16It could snow in June here.
18:18Yeah.
18:18Right, right.
18:19And literally, it has in the past.
18:22I forget what year, I looked it up once.
18:25It literally in Michigan, snowed in June in 18-whatever.
18:30That was a long time ago, but it's still possible.
18:34When Bruce and I were riding across the United States, we were in Minnesota, and we typically
18:41stayed in campgrounds.
18:42But one night there, we stayed in a hotel, and they had one of these information things
18:48where you could read all about the area, right?
18:50And I'm looking at what is considered normal for snowfall, right?
18:56And according to this thing, it is possible for it to snow in Minnesota in all but July
19:03and August.
19:06And I'm looking at it, and it is now, like, pushing toward the end of August.
19:11And I looked at Bruce, and I said, let's get out of here.
19:15I think I literally, I believe, you know, sometimes memory gets fuzzy, but I believe I recall snows
19:26in August in Michigan.
19:28So, maybe not in July, but...
19:32Well, so I read that, and it was like, we need to get out of here.
19:36Like, it's time to start heading further south.
19:38We need to get where, you know, we're not going to freeze to death.
19:41Because you certainly do not want to be riding a tandem bicycle in the snow.
19:45Like, that is not something that I would recommend.
19:49No, bad enough just in even chilly weather, or where the threat of, if not snow, just rainy
19:58days.
20:00The cold rain is bad enough.
20:02We had quite a few rainy days.
20:05In fact, we started in Astoria, Oregon.
20:09We got started at the end of June.
20:11We had anticipated starting in May, but that was COVID 2020.
20:15And there was nothing open.
20:17We couldn't do it.
20:18And we had decided, if we could start by the middle of July, that we would go ahead and
20:23go on the trip.
20:25And it was the end of June.
20:27We were able to go.
20:28Our very first day, it was about 55 degrees, and it rained the whole day.
20:33And so, we were cold and wet.
20:36Yeah.
20:37Yeah.
20:38And we had just come from North Carolina, where it was, you know, 85.
20:42And so, here it is, 30 degrees colder and rainy, and we're on the bike.
20:47Welcome to Oregon!
20:48Yes.
20:49And I was thinking, I don't know, maybe this isn't going to be as much fun as I thought
20:56it was going to be.
20:57But, so we definitely, we hit, we hit several rainy spots.
21:03We got hailed on one time, where we were out at a thunderstorm.
21:07It started hailing.
21:10Yeah, you kind of do what you have to do.
21:13And then, when we were in Minnesota, there was a day, actually three days in a row, where
21:19they said that the thunderstorms were coming through, and they expected, like, 60 mile an
21:24hour straight line winds.
21:25And so, we got a hotel and stayed.
21:28Depending on your state, like Michigan, if there's hail, you got to look for tornadoes.
21:36Yes.
21:36Yeah, and so we just said, we obviously do not need to be in a tent.
21:40You know, we do not need to be riding our bicycle, and we do not need to be in a
21:44tent.
21:44And so, we got a, we stayed somewhere.
21:46We actually, we stayed next to a Walmart and across the street from a restaurant, and it
21:51was like, perfect, everything we need.
21:53Food, other things that you need were great.
21:56And so, you know, the rain would stop, and it would kind of clear up for a little bit,
22:01and we would run to the store and get a few things, come back to the hotel, it would
22:04start pouring again.
22:05And it was like, yeah, this is why we're glad we're not out in that.
22:08So.
22:08Yeah.
22:09You're right close to me, a few cities over in Taylor, Michigan.
22:14There's a Red Roof Inn right off I-75, next to a Home Depot, a church, a couple of restaurants,
22:23and across from that is BJ's Warehouse and Menards.
22:27So, yeah, it's like.
22:29Yeah.
22:30It's everything you need.
22:32That's, well, and we're often.
22:33I mean, it's all a stone's throw from Southland Mall even, so.
22:37Right, right.
22:38And so that's, that's kind of what we had to do as we were going across the United States.
22:43You have to remember, it's COVID, so a lot of things that used to be open weren't open.
22:47And we took advantage of, like, the Dollar Generals, the number of times that we stopped
22:54in a Dollar General and figured out how are we going to eat.
22:57Well, let's see.
22:58We can have some of this and we can have some of this.
23:00We ate a lot of oatmeal because, you know, it's easy to heat up water.
23:04We ate a lot of trail mix kind of stuff where I would go in and I would buy different
23:10kinds
23:10of.
23:11I would starve because I can't eat that stuff.
23:12I hate that stuff.
23:14No.
23:14But, you know, we would do things like I'd buy some dried fruit and then I'd buy some nuts
23:19and then maybe, like, like Cheerios because that's a good thing to stick in a mix.
23:25You can't have too many nuts or there'd have to be a lot of those poo-poo stops.
23:30Yeah, no, no, no.
23:31And then, like, I always, I like chocolate.
23:36I always like chocolate.
23:37So I put a little bit of M&Ms in there too, you know, and then you make up a
23:41nice little
23:41bag of goodies that you can eat.
23:44And the other thing we did is whenever we would pass a grocery store, if they had a grocery
23:50store that also did, like, the roasted chickens, you know, where they, we would go in and get
23:56a chicken.
23:57And when we stopped for the night, we would eat off of that chicken and then you'd have
24:02to throw away the rest.
24:03I mean, it's not, but we were hungry.
24:05We're doing a lot of bicycling.
24:06And so we would sit and pick on that chicken.
24:09You were burning calories.
24:09Yeah.
24:10Yeah.
24:10And we would pick on the chicken and then maybe we would have grabbed a, I don't like
24:15a potato salad or something.
24:17And that would be dinner that night.
24:19At the deli, yes.
24:19Yeah.
24:20Yeah.
24:20Yeah.
24:20And the one night that I loved it, we were in Montana, but we passed a Costco.
24:26And we went in and got one of their big pizzas and tied it to the top of our trailer
24:33that
24:33we had all of our goodies in.
24:35And we tied it to the top.
24:36And when we got to our campground, we had pizza for dinner.
24:39So.
24:41Oh, that's good.
24:42That's good.
24:43But, uh, I mean, like joking, you need to do a follow-up bicycling around, along Route
24:5366 or something next.
24:55That would be, wouldn't that be fun?
24:57Yeah.
24:57So what we actually did was the following summer, we rode up the coast of Maine and we did about
25:03300 miles along Maine and stopped at several different, I think six or seven different,
25:09um, lighthouses.
25:10So I called it my lighthouse tour.
25:12Um, and, and that was very, that was enjoyable.
25:16I think what I liked about that trip was that it was so much shorter.
25:19You know, we did, it was, it was two weeks.
25:22We weren't, we weren't trying to prove anything.
25:25We had already proven something.
25:27We already rode across the United States and it was more, it was more just fun and enjoyable.
25:32Whereas the one across the United States, I mean, it was fun.
25:35Don't get me wrong.
25:36I'm glad I went, but it was also very hard.
25:40And, and.
25:41Way too much work for me.
25:42No chance.
25:43Well, yeah, you want it.
25:45Well, and there, and there was a lot of, for me, it was internal pressure, but a lot
25:50of pressure to finish.
25:52Like I, I, I wanted, I wanted to say that we did it.
25:56A bucket list goal.
25:58Yes.
25:58Yes.
25:58But going, going up the coast of Maine, at any point I could have said, yeah, I'm kind
26:03of done with this and it would have been fine.
26:05I wouldn't have felt bad about stopping.
26:07And so that was a very different kind of trip.
26:10Yeah.
26:10Okay.
26:12Well, time has flown as it usually does.
26:15You have a website people could find you.
26:18Yeah, absolutely.
26:19So it's my name.
26:20It's Terry M.
26:21Brown.com.
26:22That's T E R I M.
26:24Brown.com.
26:25Um, there you can find everything you can find.
26:27I've got some podcasts, all my books, uh, you can sign up for my newsletter, all my social
26:33media, find my show, absolutely.
26:38So it's, it's all there.
26:40And so that's probably the best place.
26:43And then if you want to interact with me, I'm on all the different social medias.
26:46So you can go to any one of those.
26:48Once you know, you know how to get there and you can do that for my website.
26:51All right.
26:52Thank you, Terry Magnificent Brown.
26:58I, I, I was tempted to do the mediocre joke again, but I, my audience knows I can't normally
27:08pass on the tease and the joke, but I let it go this time.
27:13Well, no, actually I didn't.
27:15I didn't repeat it anyway.
27:18Right.
27:19Yeah.
27:19That's me.
27:20I just can't do it.
27:22I just can't let it go.
27:24Disney.
27:24Now I'll have in my head.
27:26Oh, ADHD, OCD brain.
27:28The rest of it.
27:28Let it go.
27:30Let it go.
27:31Let it go.
27:32All right.
27:34Take care.
27:34God bless, Terry.
27:36See you later.
27:36Thank you so much.
