00:12The original Constitution is silent on the subject of citizenship.

00:17It doesn't have any statement of who is a citizen or who isn't.
00:21In that space of this undefined term, citizen, racism was allowed to flourish.
00:26At the heart of the 14th Amendment is the definition of citizens in America.
00:32It is through this definition that all the rights we cherish are granted and defended.
00:39Racial equality.
00:40Marriage equality.
00:41Women's equal citizenship.
00:43The right to have rights.
00:44And under the law, everyone in America gets equal protection.
00:50My fellow Americans, this is a problem which faces us all.
00:59Who is America?
01:02We talk about equality a lot in America.
01:05We talk about justice.
01:06The 14th Amendment was intended to make that vision real.
01:12The right to participate.
01:14The right to vote.
01:15The right to call on the government.
01:16And also to get protections against the government.
01:19The 14th Amendment is a promise of equality for all.
01:25No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of the citizens of the
01:32United States.
01:33It says we are all deserving of empathy and dignity.
01:36Well, I'm scared, but I'm gonna stay, cause I'm tired of running, running, running.
01:44Nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property.
01:48Nor deny any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.
01:55The founders wrote life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
