00:03Good afternoon and may I begin by wishing you all a happy International Women's Day.

00:10Thank you for giving up your time today in support of not just International Women's Day,

00:16but in particular for the Women, Peace and Security and the Preventing of Sexual Violence Initiative.

00:23The Women, Peace and Security Initiative was created by the UN Security Council

00:27back in 2000 with the Resolution 1325.

00:30It's about fundamentally including women in all decision and policy making

00:36relating to international armed conflict.

00:39I come from the central part of Nigeria where we've had more than one decade of violent conflict.

00:45I felt, do I want to be angry about the situation or do I want to get involved?

00:49And I actually got involved into peace building, facilitating dialogue between warring communities.

00:55As someone who firmly believes in the equality of men and women,

01:01I feel drawn to your cause and to do what I can to help raise further awareness of your work.

01:08Each and every one of you are living proof that no women needs to be given a voice.

01:14You have a voice.

01:16What matters is that voice is heard and that the world listens to what you have to say.

01:22One has to always remember peace building is very hard work

01:27because we swim upstream in deep and unclear waters.

01:32Being here together with the other women who are working just like me,

01:36it gives enormous courage.

01:38We share and learn from each other.

01:40That's exactly the sisterhood.

01:42I am publicly committing myself to doing what I can to champion and support WPS and PSVI

01:51and make this a central pillar of my work in the coming months and years.
