03:02The Chiefs go an hour from their facilities to go up to St. Joe, Missouri.

03:09I also think it's nice for the fans, you know, who can pack the place and go see their heroes.

03:27And, I mean, the Bills were only there for like a week and a half.

03:37So, maybe I'm a little bit biased.

03:41It's another offseason here.
03:43I mean, this has changed.
03:44It's varied a little bit year to year.
03:46But, as you'll know, the Bills are, again, one of the favorites.
03:50They're co-favorites to win the AFC at DraftKings right now with Baltimore.
03:55So, we've seen that kind of thing before.
03:57For you, New England happened last year, Matt.
04:00For you, are the Bills with a new coach and even a new stadium, if that matters at all,
04:04tough schedule, are they, for you, the same kind of favorite going in this year as they've been?
04:10Yeah.
04:11I don't, look.
04:12I mean, the schedule, or the stadium aside, although I think the stadium looks fantastic.
04:16I know people are complaining because there's like five seats that are not great.
04:20Who cares?
04:21They'll figure it out.
04:22Look, I look at the Bills largely the same way I've looked at them over the last, let's call it,
04:29five or six years.
04:30Where I look at them and say, they're going to be there in the middle of January, and it's going
04:36to come down to a play here, a play there, are they healthy, all those types of things.
04:40And I think that's, especially in this conference this year, I mean, you could make a real case, and not
04:46one of these cases where like 9,000 things have to go right.
04:49Like a real legitimate case.
04:51Six to eight teams in the AFC can look at themselves as a Super Bowl contender this year.
04:56I mean, some stronger than others, obviously.
04:58But, you know, Buffalo, Baltimore, Kansas City, Houston, Denver, New England.
05:03You want to throw Jacksonville in there?
05:04They're cool.
05:05I mean, you know, the Chargers, I'm not a Chargers fan.
05:07Cincinnati, maybe.

05:10I mean, there's so many teams that you could look at and go, hey, a couple things go right.
05:14That team could be in the AFC Championship game.
05:16If you can get to that point, you can get to the Super Bowl.
05:19My big thing with the Bills, and it's my big question for them, I think every team has one or
05:24two of them, but what is the defense going to be under Jim Leonard?
05:27It's obviously a big change going from a 4-3 to a 3-4.
05:31It looks like Elam Zor is a guy they're super excited about in the second level.
05:35Maybe he can come in and give him some punch next to Bernard.
05:39The secondary, look, I think there's clearly talent there.
05:42My big question is the front, because that's where the defense, the changeover in scheme is going to be most
05:49effective.
05:49Yes, you're going with some more mass coverage on the back end, but I'm just curious, Rousseau changing position here.
05:57Chubb coming in, Oliver changing position.
06:01What does that look like?
06:03How quickly can they kind of get to where they want to be?
06:06That's what I wrote my whole camp report about.
06:08I don't think I got to Josh Allen until I was 1,000 words in.
06:10I know what he is.
06:12I know they're going to score points.
06:13What is their defense going to be?
06:16Yeah, you know, the defense does lead me to Josh Allen somewhat, Matt, is thinking about if it's rocky, the
06:25transition,
06:25because guys are playing new positions in a new scheme and whatever, maybe they start the season and have to,
06:35maybe they're in games where they got to throw more.
06:38And maybe that ends up being a thing that helps unlock them, ultimately.
06:44They've got D.J. Moore now.
06:45Maybe they're more capable of doing that, if they have to.
06:48Not to say they're just going to abandon the defending NFL rushing leader in James Cook,
06:53but it's possible that the defense is bumpy enough that Allen has to throw, you know, six or eight more
07:01times a game,
07:01and maybe that ends up being a good thing.
07:04Yeah, and I think early on in the season, he's probably going to have to.
07:08I know, week one, they're playing the Houston team that you better come with it, Matt.
07:13I mean, that team defensively.
07:14I don't care how good you are on offense.
07:17They're going to make life very difficult.
07:19Obviously, the Bills know from playing down there the last couple of years, it is just, that is going to
07:23be a rock fight.
07:24I don't care what, no matter how, the Bills could be a team that ends up winning the Super Bowl,
07:28be one of the greatest teams ever.
07:29I mean, that's going to be a rock fight.
07:30Yep.
07:31But then in the next few weeks, they play a Lions team.
07:34That's going to be the complete opposite game.
07:35That's going to be like a race to 50.
07:37Because I don't know if the Lions can stop anybody, but they can score.
07:41And then you have the Chargers, who, again, I think that's a game where you'd expect it to be up
07:44in the high 20s,
07:45and then it's New England, and then it's the Rams.
07:47So to your point, yeah, Allen's going to have to be Allen right out of the gate.
07:54Like, they are going to need him to play really well, and they're going to need Cook to be able
07:59to keep things honest.
08:00And D.J. Moore is going to have to be able to jump right in this offense, which he should
08:03be able to because there's familiarity with Brady.
08:06But early on in the season, that defense, look, I will be floored if they come out and they're just
08:12excellent.
08:13It's going to take time.
08:14I don't care who you are.
08:16You know, I was talking to Terrell Bernard after practice when I went up there, and he was talking to
08:20me about the fact that, look, you know,
08:21it's a matter of not thinking as much and just kind of going and reacting.
08:26And if you ask anybody making a scheme change, that's the truth.
08:30Like, that's just – Dave, a lot of these guys were in McDermott's system for a long time.
08:35And now you're doing something – it's basically like asking somebody to write left-handed after they've written right-handed
08:40for 10 years.
08:41It's hard.
08:42It's going to take some time.
08:43They're going to think about how to form the letters where he doesn't write.
08:46And I think for the Bills, that's okay.
08:50It's going to be about where is this defense come Thanksgiving?
08:53Where is this defense as it goes into that big push?
08:56Because in the end, the Bills season is not going to be defined by week one or two.
09:00It's going to be defined by week 19.
09:02That's what it's going to be about.
09:03With Matt Vertoram, Mike Schopen, the Bulldog here, the Bills have not won in Houston in 20 years.
09:09Oh, and six since then, including that playoff loss.
09:13Perhaps it's the ghost of Earl Campbell, who's not – by the way, he's still with us.
09:17But, you know.
09:19Thanks for letting me slip that in.
09:20So, you mentioned D.J. Moore, Matt, his past with Brady.
09:25How optimistic are you for this?
09:28Does it come down to circumstances?
09:30Bulldogs talking about maybe a season where they get scored on more and need to, you know, rev things up
09:35a little bit more offensively.
09:36Do you like the player and do you like the fit?
09:39Look, I do like the player.
09:41I'll be very honest.
09:42So, I thought giving up a second-round pick for him and then giving him a lot more money was
09:46aggressive.
09:47But at the end of the day, I'll tell you right now, I'm a Knicks fan.
09:50The Knicks gave up 8,000 picks for Mikael Bridges.
09:52Nobody cares.
09:54They won a championship.
09:55Like, in the end, who cares?
09:56If the Bills let them win the Super Bowl and D.J. Moore is a big part of it, you
09:59should have given up a first-round pick.
10:01You won.
10:02That's it.
10:04That all said, I do think Moore is going to be a major focal point in this offense.
10:11And I do think because of the changeover on the defensive side, I think Allen has a chance.
10:16Look, Allen hasn't thrown for 4,000 yards in a few years.
10:18He's going to do it this year because they're going to be throwing the football more.
10:22And I think part of that is the defense.
10:24Part of that is just I think Brady wants to be more aggressive in the way that they play, take
10:28more shots.
10:29And D.J. Moore is that guy.
10:31Not to say Khalil Shakir can't get loose on a deep ball or Joshua Palmer, but if they're going to
10:36throw the ball deep, by and large, it's going to be D.J. Moore.
10:38I mean, he's going to be the guy they're calling a shot play for.
10:41And so, look, I do think you've seen good chemistry early when I was there.
10:46They had a couple of nice hookups and team drills.
10:49I would expect that Moore is going to be targeted well over 100 times.
10:54And it just becomes a matter of, look, I mean, you can act on a couple of those deep balls.
10:58You can have 1,000 yards, isn't it?
10:59It wouldn't surprise me.
11:00I mean, I expect that the Bills are going to spread the ball around.
11:03They're going to treat Kincaid as much as a receiver.
11:06He has a tight end.
11:06But in the end, when they get in the big spots and it's 3rd and 8th, D.J. Moore is
11:12going to be that guy past the stakes.
11:14He is just going to be the player that they rely on.
11:17And I expect him to have a nice season.
11:20I don't know that I expect him to be 1,300 yards D.J. Moore like he once was.
11:24But I wouldn't be surprised if he crashed 1,000 pounds.
11:27So, Matt, I think I saw today that the Chiefs have the NFL's second youngest roster from SpotTrack.
11:35Let's talk about them and that for a minute.
11:37The ongoing consternation around here about whether the Bills have enough at receiver that they hope to have adjusted significantly
11:46by trading for D.J. Moore is somewhat how Kansas City sounds to me.
11:51I mean, both teams have taken their shots at guys, but I think also it's fair to say both teams
11:56are, you know, still wanting from their wideouts.
12:00How does that, Chiefs-wise, Matt, how does that look to you right now?
12:04The Chiefs are kind of a funny team in the sense that it's very much like Buffalo.
12:08If you ask the Chiefs fan off the street, what is your biggest concern?
12:11It is 1,000% of the Chiefs.
12:13Like, you could talk to a lot of people around that team and in that building, and they would tell
12:18you, listen, they spent their first four draft picks on the defensive side of the ball.
12:22And Mansour Delaney, he's been dealing with a little bit of a shoulder.
12:25He's been in non-contact series, although that appears that that might come off in the next few days.
12:28They expect him to be able to go full goal week one.
12:31And, you know, he's going to start.
12:33They've got a couple of pass rushers in our Mason Thomas and Peter Woods.
12:37Peter Woods has probably been one of the three best players in camp, period, for them.
12:40He's been a guy they're expecting to line up next to Chris Jones and, you know, cause havoc in the
12:45pocket.
12:46But to get back to the receivers, they didn't draft a receiver until the fifth round, Cyrus Allen, who was
12:51kind of an afterthought.
12:52I mean, they drafted him out of Cincinnati, smaller guy, you know, not real small, but certainly, you know, five,
12:58I think it's 5'11", like 195, nothing crazy.
13:03He's been a borderline revelation for that team.
13:07You know, it's been Rice is coming off of all this stuff in the offseason, worthy.
13:11He's been coming off shoulder surgery, and he even had a little bit of a hiccup in Campbell that he's
13:15back down.
13:17But it's Rice, and it's worthy.
13:19And then it's, you know, Tyquan Thornton, who's been a good deep threat for him, but it's Tyquan Thornton.
13:23He's not a guy you want after 80% of snaps.
13:26And all of a sudden, Cyrus Allen's coming.
13:28Cyrus Allen's been the best receiver we've had in camp.
13:29I mean, he has been incredibly reliable.
13:32Mahomes has been throwing the ball at him.
13:33But that all said, he's a fifth-round rookie.
13:36I mean, you don't know what you're going to get when the lights come on.
13:39And then Rice is, you know, the most talented guy they have, but he's unreliable for a variety of reasons.
13:45And worthy's talented and was very good at the end of his rookie year, was hurt all of last year,
13:49played through it, but was not up to snuff.
13:52I think there's a very open question.
13:53It's why they went out and got Kenneth Walker.
13:55So they can run the ball.
13:57Oddly enough, I think you're going to see the Chiefs do what the Bills did when Brady first got there,
14:01which was, hey, we're going to run the ball.
14:03We're going to get more in the center, play action, which is something they have never done since Mahomes has
14:08been there.
14:09But they've been working on it quite a bit this summer.
14:11Cyrus Allen is starting to get drafted, Bulldog.
14:13He's pretty much now being drafted in every fantasy draft.
14:18Although, with a grain of salt here on this one, on this player, Matt, I mean, you said day three
14:23rookie.
14:23Don't the Chiefs always manage to have somebody in camp that's, like, really buzzy?
14:29I don't know how they do it.
14:30I mean, they're the Chiefs.
14:31They've won a lot.
14:32Obviously, you can start there.
14:33But they seem to be good at lighting up, so to speak, you know, year to year, a different player
14:41in training camp.
14:42I think this is that guy this year for this.
14:45Yeah, you're right.
14:47And listen, training camp buzzes around the league.
14:49And to some degree, it's in one ear and out the other, right?
14:52Because, you know, show me the GM who walks to the podium in the middle of August and goes, hey,
14:56by the way, our class stinks.
14:59Like, that's not going to happen.
15:00But the funny thing is with the Chiefs, coming into this year, I talked to a lot of people in
15:04one hour of a drive.
15:05And the prevailing thought was, look, Mahomes is going to be back.
15:08We're going to be a contender.
15:10But the reality is this is a two-year rebuild.
15:12And it's not going to be fully done until next year because we're really changing out a lot of the
15:16older guard.
15:16We're bringing in new guys.
15:17And that's still true, by the way.
15:18Like, they expect to contend.
15:20They still think if things line up, they can win a Super Bowl.
15:21But they know that the roster they currently have is kind of under construction.
15:28Cyrus Allen coming in and being a guy that all of a sudden is immediately taking starter snaps was surprising
15:35even to them.
15:36I mean, they did not foresee that happening.
15:38I know my colleague Albert Breer was up at Chiefs camp, and he wrote that they feel like Allen has
15:43Stephon Diggs-like qualities.
15:44Now, does that mean he's going to be Stephon Diggs?
15:46Of course not.
15:47But they really feel like this is a guy who runs really good routes, he's got really good hands, his
15:52technique is excellent.
15:53And Patrick Mahomes, over the years, if you show up when you're supposed to show up, you run good routes,
16:00if you're on punt, he'll throw you a football.
16:02The guy he has a big trust issue with are these guys that freelance in routes.
16:06Ironically, except for Kelsey, who's the biggest freelancer in the world, but they just know each other so well.
16:10They're on the same page.
16:12But this is a class the Chiefs need these rookies to perform.
16:15Allen has been a real surprise for them.
16:18And Peter Woods, like I said earlier, is the other guy who, I mean, if you've been flying Chiefs camp
16:22every day, there's just another clip of him destroying somebody, including some of their best golfers, you know, Creed Humphrey,
16:28Trey Smith.
16:29So he's been a guy who went from being like, oh, he'll be a rotational pass rusher to, oh, no,
16:33he's going to start now next to Chris Jones.
16:35You mentioned a few moments ago, Matt, that Rasheed Rice can be unreliable for a variety of reasons.
16:42Is the off-the-field stuff all, is that all buttoned up, or is there still reason to sweat some,
16:50any kind of disciplinary action from the league?
16:52Or are we all in the clear now?
16:55No, I don't think there's any disciplinary action coming.
16:57There's no expectation of that.
16:59But, I mean, this is a guy who at one point was facing eight felony counts and then got probation
17:06out of that and was suspended for all those things six games last year.
17:11So that was handled.
17:12Then he had this probationary period that he violated probation this spring, and he had to rehab a minor knee
17:18surgery from jail.
17:20So he came out of jail, and now he's been given his freedom, and he's had it for a few
17:25months.
17:26But let's be real here.
17:27I mean, if you're Brett Veach, you're the GM in Kansas City, your phone is on vibrate, and you're praying
17:32you don't get woken up at 3 o'clock in the morning by a call from a police department.
17:37I mean, that kind of thing.
17:39And all the backdrop of this is Rice is a pending free agent after this year.
17:44I mean, this is one of these things where you're like, well, he could just be a disaster, and he
17:49ends up going on a one-year prove-it deal somewhere else.
17:52He could have 1,200 yards and 10 touchdowns, and the Chiefs are sitting here trying to weigh, should they
17:56give him four years and $100 million?
17:58I mean, it's a weird situation.
18:01He is clearly their best receiver.
18:04They can play him inside, play him outside.
18:05He runs a variety of routes.
18:07He is the biggest threat they have on that team alongside Kenneth Walker.
18:13But you just literally don't know day-to-day with him what he's going to do on and off the
18:19field.
18:19So that's going to be a storyline for them where they could be six weeks into the year, and he's
18:24playing great, and all of a sudden something happens.
18:26And that is a fear that they have to live with all the time with Rasheed Rice.
18:31Matt, do you think Kansas City should be the AFC West favorite or no?
18:37I don't think they should be the betting favorite based on the fact that Denver finished eight games better than
18:43them last year.
18:43And I don't think you can – you just can't gloss over that.
18:47Now, look, if you ask me – I guess it's two different questions.
18:50I think Denver earned the right to be the betting favorite.
18:54Do I think the Chiefs are the best team?
18:56I do.
18:57And I only say that because I think the Broncos have a better roster once in 53.
19:02But the quarterback, as we all know, matters way more than two through 53 in a lot of cases.
19:08And Mahomes has looked 100% healthy.
19:11He's been out there doing everything to the point that they kind of have to hold him back at times.
19:17I think week one, we're going to find out a lot.
19:19They host the Broncos on Monday Night Football.
19:21I'm going to be there for Sports Illustrated.
19:22And that is – I mean, that game is going to be a huge –
19:25so, look, I think Denver –
19:27the fact that Denver's not even favored above the Chargers is mind-blowing.
19:31Yeah, they're third.
19:32Like, I don't understand.
19:33How does anybody look at the Chargers and think they're better than the Broncos?
19:36I don't know.
19:37But I think the Chiefs are the best team.
19:41I would not be surprised if we're sitting here in the middle of January
19:43and we're all sitting here having a discussion about the Bills and the Chiefs
19:46in the divisional round, the AAC championship.
19:48It's just – they're the best quarterbacks.
19:51And those both teams have their questions and their flaws.
19:53But in the end, like, those guys are healthy and playing well.
19:56You know, I mean, the Chiefs were 6-11 last year.
19:58They were the Super Bowl favorites on Thanksgiving.
20:01I mean, that's – so, look, I think they'll be good again.
20:05But I do think Denver's going to be right there.
20:07Yeah.
20:08How do you view Baltimore, Matt?
20:09Like, we've never really talked about it with you because, well, you know,
20:13mostly we talk about the Chiefs and then the whole league.
20:16But, like, Baltimore, we've been running sort of a concurrent life with Baltimore.
20:20Right?
20:21Like, all this promise, MVP quarterback.
20:24I mean, Jackson's got two.
20:25Allen's only got the one, but it's close enough.
20:27And now here we are again, long time – double the amount of time McDermott was here.
20:31John Harbaugh, 18 seasons, he's out, new coach, and they're right there with the Bills
20:37as co-favorites in the conference.
20:39Are you buying them just like you're sort of assuming the Bills will be close to the same?
20:46See, this is absolutely something I can eat at a plate and a half a crow on in five months.
20:52I don't think they're that good.
20:54Like, maybe I'm just dead wrong and I'm blind to it.
20:57Like, their entire roster – okay, Flowers is a terrific receiver.
21:01Hamilton is easily the best safety in football.
21:04Those two guys aside, they don't have a single guy under the age of 29 who you'd be like,
21:09that guy's good.
21:10Not one.
21:12Roquan Smith is 29 years old, had a down year last year.
21:14Omar Jackson, 29, turns 30 in January.
21:17He's been hurt through the last five years.
21:19Derrick Henry is amazing.
21:20He's a feat of science at this point.
21:23He's 32 years old.
21:25They lost Tyler Lenderbaum.
21:27They have a 31- or 32-year-old left tackle that's escaping me right now,
21:32and Ronnie Stanley, who is hurt all the time.
21:34I like Drew Hendrickson.
21:36They brought him in.
21:36He's 31 years old.
21:37I don't know what you're getting.
21:38He played less than half a season last year in Cincinnati.
21:41Matabike's coming off the neck injury.
21:43Marlon Humphrey's over 30.
21:44Chidovi Ouzi's over 30.
21:45At some point, you'll look at them and go,
21:48okay, well, I have no idea of the number two receivers.
21:50Jacoby Lane has been really good at camp for them.
21:52I'll see them in a few weeks, but I haven't seen them yet.
21:55The report's re-exualt.
21:56I have questions about the line.
21:58I have questions about secondary receivers defensively.
22:00If Hendrickson's not what he was two, three years ago,
22:04they have a very questionable pass rush.
22:07I think Baltimore is a borderline playoff team.
22:12I think the Steelers have a much lower ceiling,
22:14but I also think they have a higher floor.
22:16I think Cincinnati, if they can stop anybody,
22:20should win 10 or 11 games.
22:21I mean, their schedule's not hard in that offense,
22:23since we're 30 points.
22:24So I like Minter, but he's a first-time head coach.
22:28They've got a 30-year-old offensive coordinator,
22:29and Declan Doyle has never been a coordinator before at any level.
22:34I think the Bills are appreciably better than the Ravens.
22:38Like, if I had to stack the AFC,
22:40I think the Bills are in favor of the AFC.
22:42And then I would, in some order, and I'd put them all kind of in the bag,
22:46I mean, Houston, Denver, Kansas City,
22:50and I'd throw New England in there, cool.
22:51Like, I don't – I think it's like a 1A and then like a 1B with all those.
