Kyoichi Sawada (1936–1970) was a Japanese photojournalist best known for his coverage of the Vietnam War. Born in Aomori Prefecture, Japan, he studied political science before joining United Press International (UPI) in Tokyo in 1960. In 1965 he was assigned to Vietnam, where he documented military operations, civilian displacement, and the humanitarian consequences of the conflict. His photographs were distributed internationally through UPI and published in newspapers and magazines worldwide.
In 1966, Sawada was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Spot News Photography and the World Press Photo of the Year for his photograph Flight to Safety, depicting a Vietnamese mother carrying her children across a river to escape fighting. During his five years in Southeast Asia he photographed in Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand, producing images that recorded combat operations, refugee movements, and the impact of war on civilian populations. He was killed in Cambodia in October 1970 when the vehicle in which he was travelling struck a landmine while covering the Cambodian Civil War.
Although Sawada did not publish a major photobook during his lifetime, his photographs have appeared in several posthumous collections and exhibition catalogues. These include Kyoichi Sawada: The Pulitzer Prize Photographs (1971) and later retrospective publications produced in Japan documenting his work in Vietnam and Cambodia. His archive remains an important visual record of the Vietnam War and is held in Japanese institutions and photographic collections dedicated to the history of photojournalism.
