00:03Russia's newest cruise missile runs on a jet engine you can add to your cart on AliExpress.
00:09It's not a knock-off or a scavenged part pulled from a downed aircraft.
00:13Instead, it's a real, listed, buy-it-now product originally built for hobbyist model jets.
00:19Russian engineers took that and bolted it onto a warhead.
00:22And in a single night, a Ukrainian air defense crew shot one of these down with an anti-aircraft gun
00:28older than most of their grandparents.
00:30This is the story of the S-8000 Bandarol,
00:34or how a cash-strapped defense industry built a missile out of the global hobby shop,
00:39and how Ukraine is knocking it out of the sky with Cold War hardware.
00:43Let's start with what the Bandarol actually is,
00:46because it doesn't fit neatly into the categories we're used to.
00:49Russia's cruise missile family has traditionally meant things like the Kh-101,
00:53the 3M-14 caliber, or the 9M-727 used in the Iskander-K system.
01:00They're expensive, purpose-built weapons designed in dedicated missile bureaus,
01:04produced in relatively small numbers, and reserved for high-value strikes.
01:09The Bandarol is pretty much the opposite of that.
01:12It was developed by Kronstadt, a company that isn't a missile house at all,
01:16but the manufacturer of Russia's Orion drone,
01:19a medium-altitude, long-endurance, unmanned aircraft.
01:22Kronstadt took the concept of unmanned aerial vehicle
01:25and essentially militarized it into an expendable jet-powered strike weapon.
01:30The result is something that sits between a kamikaze drone and a classical cruise missile,
01:35closer in spirit to Ukraine's own rocket drones
01:38than to anything in Russia's older cruise missile lineage.
01:42On specifications, the drone is small, yet packs quite a punch.
01:46The Bandarol cruises at roughly 600 kilometers per hour,
01:50with the maximum speed sighted at around 650 kilometers per hour.
01:54That's fast enough that it outruns the kind of weapon systems
01:57Ukraine has traditionally used against slower, Shahid-type drones.
02:01Its range is also reported to be respectable at up to 500 kilometers,
02:06which is enough to reach deep behind the front line from a launch point
02:09when inside occupied territory or Russian airspace.
02:13The warhead used for the weapon is high-explosive fragmentation,
02:17with Ukraine's Defense Intelligence, or HUR,
02:20citing a weight around 114 kilograms,
02:23though some reports put the range as high as 150 kilograms.
02:27Either way, this is not a weapon built to level a hardened bunker.
02:30It's built to shred soft targets like radar arrays,
02:34logistic depots, apartment blocks,
02:36or anything that doesn't need a dedicated bunker buster to put out of action.
02:40The weapon's primary launch platform is the Orion drone itself,
02:44and Kronstadt was reportedly working to adapt it for launch
02:47from the Mi-28N attack helicopters as well,
02:51which would give Russia a second delivery method with a much shorter set-up time.
02:55But what actually makes the Bandarol newsworthy isn't the airframe.
02:59Instead, we need to focus on what's inside it.
03:02In May 2025, Ukraine's Defense Intelligence published a technical breakdown of the missile
03:08on its war and sanctions portal in the weapon components section,
03:12after examining intact examples recovered from strikes near Odessa.
03:16What they found was less a precision-guided missile,
03:19and more a parts bin assembled from half the consumer electronics industry.
03:23The engine driving this thing through the sky turned out to be a Suiwin SW800 Pro,
03:29a Chinese-made turbojet originally designed for large-scale model aircraft and radio-controlled jets.
03:35It sold commercially, openly, for around $16,000,
03:39and yes, it's listed on AliExpress.
03:42The rest of the parts list reads the same way.
03:44HUR identified the telemetry module as likely an RFD-900X,
03:50a unit either sourced from Australia directly,
03:52or produced as a Chinese clone of the Australian design.
03:55The inertial navigation system is believed to be of Chinese origin,
03:59paired with a Russian-made Kometa M8 satellite receiver.
04:02This has been the same jam-resistant antenna technology
04:06Russia has been fitting to its Shaheed-derived Jeroen drones
04:09and its UMPK and UMPB glide bomb kits.
04:13The servos, or small motors that move the control surfaces,
04:16were South Korean Dynamixel MX-64 AR units,
04:20also available on the market.
04:22And scattered through the electronics are roughly 20 distinct types of microchips,
04:27sourced from manufacturers in the United States,
04:30China, Switzerland, Japan, and South Korea.
04:33But how does a sanctioned Russian company
04:35get its hands on parts from that many countries,
04:38openly manufactured by firms that, presumably,
04:40don't want their products turning up in cruise missiles fired at Kyiv?
04:44According to HUR, most of the electronic components
04:47move through a single distribution point,
04:49a Russian electronics wholesaler called Chip and Dip,
04:52one of the country's largest domestic distributors.
04:55From there, earlier Ukrainian intelligence reporting
04:58describes a sanctions evasion network
05:01that routes these imports through intermediary countries.
05:04These include Armenia, Kazakhstan, China, Turkey,
05:08and the United Arab Emirates,
05:10all using shell companies to obscure the paper trail
05:12before the parts ever reach a Russian production line.
05:16This report is traced through an open-source analysis
05:19rather than a confirmed government finding.
05:21But the pattern lines up with a broader pattern
05:23Western sanctions enforcement has struggled with for years,
05:26which is that dual-use electronics are hard to control
05:29once they are commodity products sold at consumer scale.
05:32There's also a financial thread to this story.
05:35Kronstadt, the company building the banderoll,
05:38has not exactly been a picture of corporate stability.
05:40In one report in August 2025,
05:44the company was facing potential bankruptcy,
05:46with around 40 lawsuits totaling roughly $7.7 million
05:49filed against it over three months,
05:52and no clear path to restructuring
05:54at the time of that reporting.
05:55This complicates the efficient, low-cost war machine framing,
05:59as even Russia's budget solution
06:01to precision strike capability
06:02appears to be running on financially shaky ground.
06:06So when did this thing actually show up on the battlefield,
06:09and how much is Russia actually using it?
06:11One of the earliest reports of the banderoll
06:14was at Russia's Kapustin Yar test site in late 2024,
06:17before its integration into Russia's combined missile
06:20and drone strike packages.
06:22Since then, it's become a recurring feature
06:24in some of the largest bombardments of the war.
06:27Russian forces reportedly used banderoll munitions
06:30in the May 2026 strike
06:32that also included the Oreshnik missile.
06:34The weapon has since been used in widespread attacks,
06:37with direct reports indicating
06:38that bystanders heard the engines of these drones overhead.
06:42So this isn't even a rare experimental weapon anymore.
06:45It's being folded into Russia's mass strike doctrine,
06:48alongside shahids, calibers, and ballistic missiles.
06:51And that mass strike role
06:53is exactly why the banderoll is dangerous in a way
06:56that's different from a conventional cruise missile.
06:59An April 2025 assessment,
07:01based on an analyst expert open-source opinion,
07:04indicated the banderoll's jet propulsion
07:06gives its speed unlike that of a traditional drone.
07:09This means standard ground-based machine guns,
07:11the kind Ukrainian mobile fire teams
07:14have used to shoot down slower shahid drones,
07:16simply can't track and engage with the drone effectively.
07:19Countering it requires systems purpose-built
07:22to track fast maneuvering targets,
07:24usually radar-guided platforms
07:26like the German-supplied Gephard
07:28self-propelled anti-aircraft gun.
07:30That's the core tactical problem of the banderoll.
07:33It's fast enough to slip past
07:35the cheap counter-drone defenses
07:36Ukraine has spent three years building up,
07:39while being cheap enough that Russia can afford
07:41to lose a meaningful number of them in the process.
07:43It also has more maneuverability
07:45than Russia's older crews,
07:46which matters against static air defense systems
07:49that are tuned to predict
07:50more conventional, straighter flight paths.
07:53Which brings us to the twist in this story.
07:55In mid-July 2026,
07:58Ukraine's 121st Separate Territorial Defense Brigade
08:01shot down two Russian aerial targets,
08:04one of them a banderoll,
08:05using 40mm Bofors L-70 anti-aircraft guns.
08:09If that name doesn't mean much to you,
08:11the Bofors L-70 is a Swedish-designed anti-aircraft gun
08:15that first emerged in 1947,
08:18and formally entered service in 1951,
08:20and it's been fielded by militaries
08:22around the world continuously since.
08:24We're talking about a weapon system,
08:26that is, depending on the specific unit,
08:28somewhere in the neighborhood of 70 years old,
08:30with a rate of fire generally sighted
08:32between 240 and 330 rounds per minute,
08:36and an effective range against aerial targets
08:38of roughly 4,000 meters.
08:40More specifically, the guns used by the 121st Brigade
08:44had no major modifications beyond upgraded sighting systems,
08:48meaning the crews are very likely doing this
08:50with largely manual targeting,
08:52tracking a jet-powered missile with a gun designed
08:54before modern digital fire control systems existed.
08:58That's particularly notable because other operators
09:00have gone the opposite direction with this same gun.
09:03Some countries have paired the L-70 with radar fire control
09:06and automatic target tracking,
09:08turning it into a much more modern point-defense system.
09:12Ukraine's donated units, at least as reported,
09:15are the bare-bones version.
09:16Lithuania delivered the first batch of these guns to Ukraine
09:19back in February 2023,
09:21with additional guns supplied later by the Netherlands.
09:24So, this isn't even a weapon Ukraine built or maintained,
09:27but a Cold War-era NATO surplus,
09:30repurposed to plug a very 21st-century air defense gap.
09:34Now, it's worth spending a moment on the other missile
09:36that went down that week,
09:38because the contrast tells its own story.
09:41The Kh-59, or as NATO calls it, the AS-13 King Bolt,
09:45is a much older design than the Bandarol,
09:48dating back to Soviet development in the 1970s and 80s,
09:52now produced by Russia's Tactical Missiles Corporation.
09:55Depending on the exact variant,
09:57it has a range of somewhere between roughly 115 and 290 kilometers,
10:02a top speed in the range of 900 to just over 1,000 per hour,
10:06and a warhead in the area of 300 kilograms,
10:09meaning it's considerably heavier than the Bandarols.
10:12Its guidance is a mix of inertial navigation
10:15for the mid-course flight,
10:16a television camera in the nose
10:18that lets an operator aboard the launch aircraft
10:21visually identify and lock onto the target
10:23in the final approach.
10:25In other words,
10:26the Kh-59 is a genuinely old-school precision weapon,
10:29requiring a trained operator watching a video feed
10:32at the critical moment.
10:34The Bandarol, by contrast,
10:36is largely autonomous once launched,
10:38GPS and inertial guided,
10:40and built to be cheap enough
10:41that losing one to a 70-year-old anti-aircraft gun
10:44barely registers on Russia's production ledger.
10:46Same week, same brigade, same guns,
10:50but two completely different philosophies
10:52of how to build a missile.
10:53It's also worth noting that the Bofor story
10:56isn't the only air defense success Ukraine has had
10:59against this kind of saturation threat.
11:01The same report noted
11:02that a single Ukrainian Skynex system
11:05destroyed 12 Russian aerial targets in one engagement,
11:08including a cruise missile
11:10and 11 Shahid-type drones.
11:12This is what having a modern,
11:14radar-directed German air defense unit
11:16built specifically to shoot down fast,
11:19small, low-flying targets gives you,
11:21especially when Russia is using drones
11:23that have come out of commercial factories.
11:25Put those two stories side by side
11:27and you get a fairly honest snapshot
11:29of how Ukraine is actually defending its skies right now.
11:32Not with one silver bullet system,
11:34but with a patchwork.
11:36On one end, there's a cutting-edge radar-guided German gun.
11:39On the other, you have a manually-aimed Swedish antique.
11:42Both are doing the same fundamental job
11:44because there simply aren't enough of the modern systems
11:47to cover everything at once.
11:48And more importantly, around the same time,
11:51a video shared by an open-source analyst
11:53using the handle Special Kurson-Kat
11:56appeared to show a Russian Orion drone,
11:58the same platform that carries the Bandarol,
12:00burning in a field in occupied Crimea
12:02after apparently being destroyed by its own side
12:05rather than by Ukrainian action.
12:07Researchers geolocated the wreckage
12:09to a village called Ivanovka,
12:11roughly 13 kilometers from Kirch
12:13and 11 kilometers from the airfield
12:15these drones typically operate out of.
12:17The video fits the broader picture
12:19of a weapons program built quickly,
12:21cheaply, and under sanctions pressure.
12:24Sometimes it works well enough
12:25to punch through Keef's defenses
12:27in a 500-plus weapon barrage.
12:29And sometimes it apparently falls out of the sky
12:32on its own side of the front line.
12:34So why does any of this matter?
12:36Well, a few reasons,
12:37and they go beyond the fact
12:39that a museum-piece anti-aircraft gun
12:41beat a jet-powered missile in a straight fight.
12:44But before that,

12:58fits in the broader context of the war.
13:00First, the weapon is a case study
13:02in what sanctions pressure actually does
13:04to a wartime economy.
13:06You can't stop weapons production outright,
13:08but instead the country is increasingly
13:10pushed towards improvisation.
13:11Russia can't easily source the precision optics,
13:15radiation-hardened electronics,
13:16or purpose-built turbojets
13:18that would go into a traditional high-end cruise missile
13:20at the volumes it needs.
13:22So instead, it's building a missile out of parts
13:25anyone with a credit card and an AliExpress account
13:28could theoretically buy piece by piece,
13:30routed through intermediary countries
13:32and wholesale distributors to obscure the trail.
13:35That's a sign of a military-industrial complex
13:38adapting to scarcity by going down market,
13:40and it's forcing Western governments
13:42and export control regimes
13:44to reckon with just how porous
13:46consumer electronics supply chains are
13:48when the end user has enough patience
13:50to launder the purchase
13:51through two or three intermediary countries.
13:53Second, there's the cost equation of this war,
13:56and here it helps to actually put numbers
13:58next to the weapons we keep mentioning.
14:00Estimates for Russia's KH-101 vary enormously
14:03depending on who's doing the reporting.
14:05Ukrainian and Western analysts have put it anywhere
14:08from around $1.2 million on the low end
14:10to as much as $13 million on the high end.
14:13The caliber sits somewhere in a similarly wide band,
14:16commonly cited from around $1 million to $6 million
14:19depending on the export versus domestic distinction.
14:23A standard Shahid-136-style drone, by contrast,
14:26is usually put at somewhere between $20,000 and $50,000,
14:30though Ukrainian intelligence assessments
14:32of Russia's domestically produced versions
14:34are run as high as $70,000.
14:36We're hedging all of these numbers deliberately
14:39because unlike the Bandarol's component list,
14:42these broader missile cost figures are contested estimates,
14:45not verified contracts,
14:46and outlets openly disagree with each other
14:48by a factor of five or even 10.
14:50But even taking the most conservative end of every range,
14:54a missile built around a $16,000 hobbyist jet engine
14:57and consumer-grade servos and batteries
15:00sits far closer to the drone side of that ledger
15:02than the missile side.
15:04That means Russia can produce and expend these things
15:06at a volume that would be unthinkable
15:08for something like the KH-101
15:10and fold them into mass strikes
15:12specifically designed to overwhelm Ukrainian air defense
15:15through sheer number of simultaneous threats
15:17rather than through any single weapon sophistication.
15:20The Bandarol isn't trying to be
15:22the smartest missile in the sky.
15:24It's trying to be one more fast-moving problem
15:26in a barrage that already includes Shahids.
15:29This is also where the is-it-a-drone-or-a-missile argument
15:32stops being pedantic
15:33and starts actually mattering
15:35for how Ukraine builds its defenses.
15:37Russia has been running the same experiment
15:39on its Shahid line that it ran on the Bandarol,
15:42bolting jet engines onto what used to be
15:44simple propeller-driven loitering munitions,
15:46producing variants like the Geren-3 and Geren-5
15:49that can reportedly hit speeds
15:51around 500 to 600 kilometers per hour.
15:54This will put them squarely in cruise missile territory.
15:57Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Yuri Ignat
16:00has described the effect bluntly,
16:02saying that on radar,
16:03one of these jet-powered variants
16:04displays as a cruise missile
16:06by its flight parameters alone,
16:08simply because of how fast it's moving.
16:10That determines which interceptor
16:12Ukrainian battery commander reaches for,
16:14and interceptors are not interchangeable in price.
16:17A single AIM-120 AMRAAM,
16:19the missile NASA batteries have used
16:21to shoot down slower Shahids,
16:23run somewhere in the range of $500,000
16:25to $1 million per shot.
16:27A Patriot Pact-3 interceptor
16:29runs closer to $4 million.
16:31When a $16,000 engine
16:33forces you to spend half a million
16:34to several million dollars
16:36just to knock it out of the sky,
16:38the exchange rate is the whole point of the weapon,
16:40regardless of whether you file it
16:41under drone or missile.
16:43It's also worth saying that Ukraine
16:45is playing the same game
16:46in the opposite direction.
16:48Ukraine's Palinitsia missile drone,
16:50first used in combat in August of 2024,
16:53weighs around 320 kilograms
16:55with roughly a 100 kilogram warhead,
16:57takes off on a solid fuel booster
16:59before its turbojet engine takes over,
17:02and is reported to reach X speeds
17:04up to 900 kilometers per hour
17:05with a range around 650 kilometers.
17:08This is nearly comparable to the KH-101.
17:11Ukrainian officials have put its unit cost
17:13at under $1 million,
17:14and some Ukrainian estimates
17:16have gone lower still.
17:18Its sibling program, the Peklo,
17:20is reportedly even cheaper to build
17:22than Ukraine's Liute long-range attack drone,
17:24which itself cost around $200,000,
17:27all the while reaching speeds
17:28of up to 700 kilometers per hour
17:30and a range of roughly 700 kilometers,
17:32with developers claiming
17:33as much as 70% domestically produced components.
17:37In other words,
17:38both sides have independently concluded
17:40that the fastest way to close the gap
17:42between cheap drone and expensive missile
17:44is to just build something
17:46that splits the difference,
17:47and that whoever can build more
17:48of that hybrid class faster
17:50is going to have the edge
17:51in this particular arms race.
17:53Third, the weapons matter
17:55because they're forcing Ukraine
17:56to fight an asymmetric defensive war
17:58on two very different technological levels
18:01at the same time.
18:02On one end,
18:03Ukraine is standing up
18:04genuinely cutting-edge systems,
18:06German Gepards purpose-built
18:07to track fast-maneuvering targets,
18:10and even, as we covered elsewhere,
18:12early laser-based counter-drone systems.
18:14On the other end,
18:15when the modern systems aren't available
18:17in enough numbers,
18:18Ukrainian crews are reaching
18:20for whatever works,
18:21including donated,
18:22decades-old anti-aircraft guns
18:24with little more than a sight upgrade.
18:26That a Bofors L-70
18:28can still bring down
18:29a 2026 vintage jet-powered missile
18:32isn't really a story
18:33about Cold War engineering
18:35being ahead of its time.
18:36It's a story about air defense at its core,
18:39still coming down
18:40to whether a crew can track, aim,
18:41and put rounds in front of a target
18:43before it arrives,
18:45and about how thin
18:45Ukraine's air defense inventory
18:47has had to stretch
18:48to cover every altitude, speed,
18:50and flight profile
18:51Russia keeps throwing at it.
18:53Put it all together,
18:54and the Bandarold tells us
18:56something bigger
18:57about where this war's
18:58weapon technology is heading.
18:59The line between drone
19:01and cruise missile is dissolving.
19:03What used to be
19:04two separate categories,
19:05with two separate defense playbooks,
19:07is collapsing into a single class
19:09of fast, cheap, jet or prop-powered
19:11GPS and inertial guided munitions
19:13that can be built
19:14from largely off-the-shelf parts.
19:16Ukraine's own Palinitsia
19:18and Peklo programs
19:19are essentially the same idea
19:21running in the opposite direction.
19:23Whoever can build these things
19:24faster and cheaper,
19:25and whoever can adapt
19:26their air defense the quickest,
19:28is going to have an edge
19:29in the next phase of this fight.
19:31For now, the score
19:32in this particular matchup
19:33goes in favor of Ukraine's
19:35olden gun,
19:36and that itself is also notable,
19:37because it suggests
19:38that we're not quite done
19:40seeing weapons
19:40that by all accounts
19:41should be obsolete.
19:43The front line in Ukraine
19:44is essentially a diorama
19:46of weapons
19:46throughout technological generations,
19:48all showcasing
19:49just how important
19:50every little piece of advantage,
19:52ingenuity
19:53and adaptation can be.
19:55But Ukraine has more tricks
19:57up its sleeve.
