00:09as the local club trials a strategy to ensure civility on the sidelines.
00:15You can clap, you can say yay, but what we don't want is parents yelling out blow-by-blow
00:19instructions to a particular player, telling them where to go, who to pass to and just
00:24be a bit more mindful and let the kids communicate to each other.
00:27The initiative aims to combat abuse against referees.
00:31Everybody should feel safe and supported and respected when they're just trying to play
00:35football or any sport.
00:36So we're hoping that it will get people to just check themselves and reflect a bit that
00:42you don't need to be yelling out instructions the whole time.
00:46Parents and coaches have mixed feelings.
00:48I think it's going to be more of a challenge for us than the kids, but yeah we're excited
00:53to see how they go.
00:53I love it, it's forcing us to really think about the game and just let the girls have
00:58fun.
00:59I understand the intention but I think it's much nicer when there's some positive and
01:03friendly cheering going on.
01:04It gives them opportunity to hopefully talk with each other and also gives a chance for
01:09the parents to sit back and relax and not get too involved.
01:12And for spectators that are not behaving.
01:15When you go up and just hand someone a lollipop.
01:17It's a nice mindful way and it's a bit of a treat just to get them to think about their
01:21behaviour and what they're doing and what they're saying and suck on a lollipop instead.
