Hello, citizens of Acity!
Today’s work, [Cargo of Time], was written based on the core theory of the master of modern thought, Michel Foucault: Heterotopia. Foucault described mirrors, gardens, ships, and trains as "other places"—strange spaces that exist within reality while simultaneously relating to, negating, or inverting all other conventional sites. This project visualizes such a place by contrasting the classic, enclosed interior of a train cabin with the high-speed blur of 21st-century skyscrapers visible through the window.
A train is a space of transition between the point of departure and the destination. The figures portrayed in this work gaze into their inner selves as fluid subjects, unmoored from any fixed location. The line "Floating on the cargo, floating in the time" in the lyrics sings of the existential freedom found in the interstices between places. Furthermore, the declaration "Belonging nowhere, creating my own Heterotopia" demonstrates the dignity of a sovereign who claims the passing process itself as her territory, rather than the predetermined destination.
A time of absolute freedom found while traveling along a fixed track. Following the gaze of the designer who has turned the unwritten gap between departure and arrival into her personal sanctuary, I hope you enjoy a time of pleasant contemplation as you discover the heterotopias within your own daily life.
