Context:

The context of this video is that when Kol compelled Damon to kill Jeremy, Elena desperately tried to stop him. She kept telling Damon, “You can fight it. You can stop.” Damon tried with everything he had, but he couldn’t overcome the compulsion.

In the second scene, Stefan fought with everything he had to control himself for Elena, and he succeeded. Stefan sacrificed himself for Elena time and time again, which is why many people see him as her true love.

In contrast, Damon rarely fought against his own selfish choices. He often put his own desires first instead of making sacrifices for Elena, which is why I don’t believe he was her true love.
