00:00At the back they had tough lads, Tommy Booth, big strong lad, midfield Mike Doyle, Tony Towers
00:08and the forward line from seven through to eleven there.
00:12You know, I mean, players that are so famous in the Manchester City history.
00:16Some would be Bell, Lee, Dennis Law and Rodney Marsh.
00:20Every one of them capable of doing magical things with the football.
00:24And John, this was the Wolves team you walked out onto the Wembley turf with
00:27and probably went out as underdogs, I suppose.
00:30Oh, very much so. When you look at that forward line,
00:32the City had got hundreds of caps between them.
00:34And we'd got Gary Pearce in the goal.
00:37It was actually his first League Cup game for Wolves.
00:39He only joined us that season.
00:41And Phil Parks was injured and Gary came in on his 23rd birthday.
00:44But we got some quality players as well.
00:46Mike Bailey, superb captain.
00:49You know, a lot of players there who stayed with the club for more than ten years.
00:52Derek Park and Geoff Palmer.
00:53And obviously up front we got the two of these stalwarts, Dugan and Wagstaff.
00:59And Dugan was the only one of our team who'd actually had previous Wembley Cup final appearance.
01:03And ironically that was against, for Blackburn against Wolves in 1960,
01:07when Wolves beat Blackburn 3-0.
01:09Well, let's join the Cavaliers.
01:13So the League Cup final is underway.
01:15Manchester City kicking off, attacking the goal to our left.
01:19Sky blue shirts and white shorts.
01:21Wolves against them in their old golden black.
01:24And the first touch now for Wagstaff with those long raking through balls of his,
01:28which will need to be a little more accurate than that.
01:31Some five or so yards behind Derek Dugan.
01:33It's Donachy then with the throw for Manchester City.
01:38Palmer getting in quickly before Law could settle on that ball.
01:42But now it's Marsh.
01:43Free kick given against Manchester City.
01:46Four Wolves.
01:51Park it.
01:53And now Wagstaff.
01:56A long raking cross towards Derek Dugan.
01:58Nicely down with his head, and that was Sunderland's kick.
02:05Bailey in first, has passed for the run.
02:07And now Dugan for Mancora, Wolves.
02:10Bell cutting out that one.
02:12But again, Bailey covering a lot of ground there for Wolves.
02:15And a lovely pass there by Bailey for Wagstaff.
02:19And he's got the cross in as well.
02:20Dugan's waiting for it.
02:21It's for Dugan.
02:22And now for Sunderland.
02:23And it just wouldn't fall quickly enough, but did it?
02:26Happened to be pushed away by Keith McRae.
02:31And that'll make Wolves feel a little better.
02:34A beautiful long cross though by Wagstaff.
02:36Lotted down so accurately by Derek Dugan.
02:39And Sunderland couldn't quite get his shot in quickly enough.
02:42But even so, it caused McRae a problem or two.
02:47So, Donachy there at the near post for Manchester City.
02:50Pardo at the far post.
02:52Frank Munro is in there too.
02:54And here's Wagstaff with the corner.
02:56Munro is there with a header.
02:57Oh, and a free header and a dangerous one from Manchester City's point of view.
03:01But straight into the arms of McRae.
03:09Pardo.
03:10Bell.
03:16Dugan is at the near post.
03:19Here comes the corner again.
03:20This time Hibbert with it.
03:23And Munro gets there.
03:24And Sunderland!
03:25And he went off the post!
03:29Well, what a turn up there for Manchester City.
03:32As they won another ball from a corner.
03:35And young Alan Sunderland knocked it against, with a deflection against the post.
03:41It's Pardo.
03:45And again, McCall is in there.
03:48Ian Munro looking quite formidable at the back at the moment.
03:52Frank Munro.
04:00Somerville.
04:07Oh, and Parking chose exactly the right moment to get in there.
04:10And here goes Wagstaff.
04:12Dugan on ahead of him.
04:13Richard's up ahead of him too.
04:17Sunderland coming up fast and here's Mike Bailey again.
04:20There's the shot by Bailey!
04:22A beautiful sweeping move by Wolverhampton Wanderers.
04:26Wagstaff inside and Bailey with a good on-target shot.
04:33Just for the defence, doing exactly the same thing every single time.
04:37Yeah, you watch David Wagstaff and Glenn Pardo, who's marked him, used to actually play with him week after week.
04:43And he just had this phenomenal burst of speed and deception where he can go one way and then go
04:50the other.
04:51And even though Glenn Pardo knows what he's going to do, he can't stop him doing it.
04:55And it's happened so many times in this match.
04:57If you do it correctly, it doesn't matter who you are, it's very difficult to defend against.
05:01All the great players had it.
05:03Matthews had it, Finney had it.
05:04You know, they can just show the full-back to go one way, but you go the other.
05:10And always on the outside?
05:11Yeah, always on the outside, yeah.
05:13I mean, Dave Wagstaff is a completely left-footed player, you know.
05:16Here he is again.
05:17He's all left-footed.
05:18You know fine well that he's not going to come inside, but you dare not take the chance.
05:22And just the skill of actually just deceiving him, sending you the wrong way, is something that only a few
05:28players have had.
05:29And he was one of them.
05:30It was great left-footed.
05:32And now it's Bailey.
05:35Certainly the only thing that's lacking at the moment is goals, because the football has been very attractive indeed.
05:43Richards, rather an ambitious ball there that fell short.
05:48And now it's Colin Bell.
05:50Here's Marsh again.
05:53To Lee.
05:54Will Marsh get in?
05:55No.
05:55Parking can turn it back quite safely, it appears.
06:02Doyle in first, intercepting it well, but the header only goes to David Wagstaff.
06:06Look at that for a beautiful pass this time to Hibbert.
06:11And this is a chance now for Richards.
06:13Oh, and he's wide.
06:19Again it started with Wagstaff, turned on again, and Richards for a moment seemed to be in there clearly with
06:25a clean chance.
06:27But he went wide.
06:33Goal!
06:34A call in for the header, Sunderland too.
06:38And Dugan beaten by Tommy Booth.
06:40And now Towers.
06:42To Marsh with two minutes to go to half-time.
06:45What a good time for anybody to score, let alone in the Cup Finals.
06:48Lee tries to get in the shot, Sunderland is there too, and it's Hibbert who gets the long ball away.
06:55Booth taking no chances.
06:57But Wolves will get the throw.
07:01And Dugan was hoping the sun would be up quickly enough.
07:13Hibbert.
07:16Bailey again.
07:19Marsh was claiming that was hand-ballless with Palmer.
07:22And now Sunderland.
07:27Back for Palmer again.
07:30Now is this the moment?
07:31Hibbert with the shot!
07:32Yes!
07:33Wolves going to the lead.
07:36And it's Kenny Hibbert who does it.
07:40With a minute to go at the half-time.
07:43Well John you were saying that Kenny Hibbert had a useful shot.
07:46Yeah but actually that wasn't one of his best strikes.
07:48If you see it again, it actually comes off the outside of his boot.
07:53Which I think that fills the key because he's dived early.
07:56And look at it, it just floats into that corner.
07:59But a good sense of timing.
08:00Perfect. As far as we were concerned he could have hit it with his knee or anything.
08:04His shin, we were just happy for it to go in.
08:07And he said perfect timing.
08:08Two minutes just before half-time.
08:09Yeah.
08:10And to be honest, on the balance of the game in the first half, we probably just edged it.
08:16Yeah.
08:18In fact we've seen some great goals from Kenny Hibbert, haven't we?
08:22Yeah, he was a great striker.
08:23And Manchester City pulled back this goal.
08:26Which Wolves I think deservedly have gone into the lead before half-time.
08:29With that goal by Hibbert.
08:31Looking the more positive side.
08:34Settling just a little quicker than Manchester City.
08:39And the ball went fractionally out of play there.
08:42Certainly Manchester City hears Hibbert, the man who scored it.
08:45Manchester City.
08:47Somerby and Pardo.
08:49It's Somerby in fact who takes it.
08:52And it was Palmer who got in there to nod it away for the corner now.
08:56To Manchester City.
08:59And it's this sort of pressure they've got to keep on Wolves now.
09:03In the hope that they can find that one vital breakthrough.
09:06And it might be coming now.
09:08No, kicked away by Palmer.
09:10Oh, and Lee just over.
09:13What an escape again for the Wolves.
09:17First of all from Booth.
09:19And the shot cleared off the line.
09:21And then when it came back in again.
09:23And then when it came back in again.
09:24Francis Sneed just over.
09:26Tim or Holly, everybody.
09:32How about adding Fulver.
09:35assertion.
09:39Dugan v Booth.
09:41And Booth getting a good defensive header in.
09:44Towers to Bernard.
09:48Bale, Marsh, Boo, Donnerkey, Towers again.
09:59Wave this time for Rodney Marsh.
10:07And he's got it in well.
10:09Oh, and this is a chance for Bale!
10:10And he's taken it, and that is one-one.
10:16Rodney Marsh, the architect's game.
10:19Well, Bobby, that sustained pressure was rewarded.
10:22Well, they had world-class forwards, City,
10:25and there's so much pressure coming there.
10:26I think what's happened really is that Wolves have decided
10:30that they don't want to take any chances in defence,
10:32so they've stayed back, and they've paid the penalty
10:34because there's sustained pressure coming at them all the time.
10:37And, of course, one slight mistake,
10:39a badly headed clearance, and Colin Bell's in a position
10:42to knock him into the back of the net,
10:43but they have really good players.
10:46Marsh had the ability to get it in quick and to find the space and time.
10:49And City are really thriving now, and they'll be looking to win it.
10:53I must say, John, you knew that you'd be under siege anyway
10:56from the beginning of the second half.
10:57Oh, yes. You know, with a quality sign like that and the forward line,
11:01we knew full well, and that's what we were expecting.
11:04It was a long time that we were under pressure,
11:05and we actually did well to hold out for that length of time.
11:08In fact, young Gary Pearce, only his 13th game of the club,
11:11his first season with Wolves, has done extremely well.
11:14I mean, that goal he couldn't stop, but he's done so well, hasn't he?
11:16He's played out of his skin. It's actually his 23rd birthday that day as well.
11:20So it was quite an ordeal for him, and he's responded magnificently.
11:25I gather he was told two days before that he was playing.
11:27That's right.
11:29Can you remember his reaction?
11:31Well, he's a Bery lad, and I think he took it quite well.
11:35I think he's like, oh, heck, something like that.
11:38And that's about as much as you would expect from somebody from Bery.
11:43And then you just get on with the game.
11:45And to be honest, I think a lot of the pundits thought
11:48he was going to be a weak point for us,
11:51but he has to prove to be a very strong point on the day.
11:54Now there's an opening for Wolves.
11:55You know, talking about end-to-end play, Bobby.
11:57Well, it is. You're getting end-to-end stuff
11:59because there's a chasm in the middle of the field.
12:03What happens is if your defenders don't come and support your forwards,
12:07you create this great big gap in the middle of the field.
12:10And, of course, what you're seeing here is
12:14there's this pressure that really...
12:16If City had kept the forwards up
12:18and if the defenders had come and supported them,
12:20they could have sustained the pressure.
12:23But they don't. They're still waiting at the back of the forwards.
12:26Look at this.
12:26Yeah.
12:27This is amazing.
12:28I mean, it's totally going to be 2-1 there, John.
12:30It's really looking how you go.
12:31He'd be standing there.
12:32He actually gave a foul against three, Dickie.
12:35Yes, that's right.
12:36He gave a foul.
12:37But, you know, again, it was this end-to-end stuff.
12:40You know, suddenly they were under attack
12:42and then we were right back up the other end.
12:45And it's just been the same throughout the whole game.
12:47And Bobby mentioned the gap in the middle.
12:49You know, these balls have been knocked about like this.
12:52The space that the players have got.
12:54Makes for an exciting game, though.
12:55I don't know.
12:57Oh, and Hibbert wasn't watching.
13:01Sean Hill McGarry put his hands to his heads then.
13:03And here's Francis Lee now for Manchester City.
13:06The chip on over the top there.
13:08Oh, and Pearce was put in a perilous position there.
13:12It looked for a long time as though that was going to drop over his head
13:15and he just nipped it himself.
13:17All six foot two of them, just to turn it over.
13:21For a corner then to Manchester City.
13:25Somerby again taking it.
13:27Booth is right in there once more.
13:28Bell is in there too.
13:29Oh, and again Pearce has done it.
13:34Well, they had doubts about this fellow.
13:3723 years old today.
13:39Six months ago in the reserves of Huddersfield
13:41and playing only his 14th first team game for Wolves.
13:44They thought he might be a weak link, but he hasn't been so far.
13:48Park it at the near foot.
13:50City putting on the pressure now.
13:51Somerby with the corner.
13:53Marsh was waiting there too.
13:54And in goes Pearce again with a foot.
13:59And it was Tony Towers who puts it well wide.
14:06So, Pearce has got a lot to remember on his birthday.
14:10Certainly had no chance at all with the goal scored for Manchester City
14:15by Colin Bell.
14:19And certainly a much more relieved look on that Manchester City bench there
14:23with Ron Saunders.
14:24And on the left of the picture is Tony Book.
14:26And there's the rather anxious look on the Wolves' faces.
14:34So, Dugan now trying to get Richards away.
14:39Booth to Towers.
14:43Long ball towards Somerby.
14:45Parkin is there with him.
14:48Palmer is covering.
14:52Sunderland again.
14:54Back for Palmer.
14:56Dugan.
15:03Bailey.
15:05Nice Sunderland again.
15:06This time it's Wexdorf on the far side.
15:12Oh, and he pulled a muscle as he ran there, Wexdorf.
15:15So, he's in a lot of trouble.
15:17He's off the pitch and so the game will go on
15:19and Wolves are down to ten men.
15:21The substitute has been warming up for Barry Powell.
15:24Well, that would have been a sad sight for the Wolves' Bears' seed.
15:26David Wexdorf.
15:28Muscle, obviously, it must have gone.
15:30Yeah, well, we thought the Sniper had got him from the crowd.
15:32Dickie, to be perfectly honest.
15:33The way he went down, holding his legs.
15:35Yes.
15:35But it was a shame to him because he was having a superb game.
15:40You know, he'd gone on to the right wing to take on the other full back.
15:45Barry had been warming up, to be perfectly honest, for quite a while.
15:48Barry had been with Wolves for a long time.
15:49He went on to Coventry and I believe McGarry was in the process of probably bringing me off.
15:56because I was being a bit ineffective because of the injury
16:00and obviously he had to change his mind because of Wang's injury.
16:04And obviously in those days there was only one substitute allowed here.
16:07Played this time for Bell.
16:09Still with Bell.
16:10Still with Bell.
16:10Pulling it!
16:15Well, Colin Bell nearly added his second goal
16:17and the second for City there which might well have wrapped it up.
16:22Sheer power of that shot.
16:24Beating Pearce.
16:26Smacking against the crossbar.
16:30Now it's Bailey.
16:31Forward for Richards.
16:36But Doyle has been quite relentless in his marking.
16:43I'm not sure whether he's got a corner there,
16:45but the substitute coming on now for Wolves.
16:49Barry Powell coming on for Wolves.
16:52And I think Bill McGarry is saying he wants somebody else off.
16:56He doesn't want Wexstaff off, but surely that can't be so
16:58because Wexstaff is really hobbling on that far side.
17:05Now there will be Wexstaff who stays off.
17:08Powell who comes on.
17:14With orders from the bench.
17:16And Wolves with a corner now.
17:21Dugan is in there.
17:22So too are the fists of McRae.
17:25Lee.
17:26And now it's Towers with his socks about his ankles.
17:31Law.
17:33Ugly as ever.
17:35By that time it was Monroe getting it back to Pearce.
17:41McCall.
17:48Dugan.
17:51Dugan.
17:52And now it's Bailey.
17:54Hibbett.
17:55Seven minutes to go.
18:00Fowl, virtually his first touch, being challenged all the way.
18:04Fairly painful first touch it was too.
18:07Just a little too fiercely there by Colin Bell.
18:09Here's Hibbett now.
18:10With a chance to cross it.
18:11Dugan going in on it.
18:13and it's finally Towers who puts it behind for the corner to Wolves
18:16and so although it's Manchester City who's had most of the second half
18:20it's Wolves who've come back now in the last few minutes
18:25still standing at 1-1
18:33Hibbert again with the corner
18:34Dugan again at the near post
18:36Munro again up there
18:40Munro having it knocked off the top of his head there by Tommy Boo
18:43here's Bailey
18:45Boston again for Sunderland
18:47and now this is a chance for Richards
18:49oh and he's got it
18:50John Richards
18:532-1 to Wolves
18:566 minutes to go
18:59courtesy Rodney Marsh John eh
19:01oh you know it's one of those where you dream of
19:04it's a great ball here from Mike Bailey
19:07down to Alan Sunderland
19:08and Alan just drills it
19:10and unfortunately Rodney just catches it with a heel
19:12and it drops almost on the penalty spot
19:14and in those days
19:16you know what you were taught by Sammy Trun
19:18was head down, hit it hard and low
19:20you don't place those
19:21you just whack them
19:22and I think it went through
19:24through somebody's legs
19:25under the goalkeeper's heart
19:26I just wonder whether Bill McGarry at that point
19:28was saying thank God I didn't take Richards off
19:30thank God almost the day he was injured
19:33mixed blessings I suppose
19:34yes great
19:36again about seven minutes from the end of the game
19:38or just a few minutes before the end of the game
19:39oh yeah but the thing is
19:40you know there's
19:42City come straight back at us
19:43and they put us under a lot more pressure
19:46but obviously again
19:47a good time to score a goal
19:49what a dream the football final
19:50your dream playing at Wembley
19:51as a striker
19:52as a centre forward
19:52you must have been dreaming
19:53thinking
19:54oh in a perfect way
19:55wouldn't it be lovely
19:56if I was about on the penalty spot
19:57and somebody rolled a ball right in front of me
19:59that's right
19:59yeah
20:00just rolled right in front of him
20:02on the penalty spot
20:03yeah
20:04I think we're back in
20:05yeah
20:05in over a minute of injury time
20:09a ball
20:10will he pass back
20:13no he'll put it where it's safe
20:15that's another throw then
20:17to Manchester City
20:20just a matter of seconds left now
20:22as Doyle hits another long ball there
20:25Law was in there
20:27and Harkin can get it away
20:29but this is going
20:30and the Wolves have won
20:31Dubin after years of trying
20:33and Bailey after years of trying
20:36Bill McGarry after years of trying
20:38they've won at last
20:39and Gary Pearce on his 23rd birthday
20:42a very very happy Gary Pearce there
20:44John
20:46celebrating his birthday
20:47and victory too for the Wolves
20:49oh yeah
20:49and understandably so
20:51he had a great performance
20:53and that was a man who
20:55you know
20:55who deserved this
20:57he was the inspiration was he
20:58Mike Bailey
20:58you know one of the
20:59I don't think Wolves have replaced him
21:01he was the greatest Wolves captain
21:03after Billy Wright
21:04we haven't had a captain
21:05like him since
21:06he deserved it
21:07he was unlucky
21:08in as much as
21:09at that particular time
21:10there were so many really good
21:11midfield players
21:12playing for England
21:13in as much as
