00:24including AI-generated images presented as authentic photos taken by journalists,
00:28old videos falsely linked to the crossings and footage shared out of context.

00:36which allegedly shows a Moroccan officer throwing a rock at a migrant climbing an embankment as he returns from Theuta.
00:43It's been credited to Reuters, but there's no evidence that the news agency published this image.
00:48OpenAI's verification tool found that it was generated using its own software.
00:53However, while it's not authentic,
00:55several videos filmed from different angles appear to show a similar incident near Efnidek,
01:00which shares a border with Theuta.
01:03News agency AFP reported there were clashes involving Moroccan police and security forces in the area,
01:10publishing video footage showing Moroccan officers wearing similar riot gear.
01:14Another image, allegedly showing dozens of shoes floating in the sea,
01:18as evidence of the waste that amassed during the crossing,
01:21has also circulated widely on social media.
01:24It was even picked up by certain news outlets,
01:27but again, OpenAI detected that it was made using its software.
01:32Then there's this video, which doesn't appear to be AI-generated,
01:35but it is being shared out of context.
01:37Social media users are linking it to the Theuta crisis,
01:41saying it shows migrants reaching Andalusia in southern Spain by boat.
01:46But the reverse image search shows that the clip is at least three years old
01:50and has been shared multiple times over the years,
01:53with accounts claiming each time that it's recent.
