00:00New York City newsstands used to be as big in the Big Apple as hot dog vendors and yellow cabs.
00:06Now they are getting a modern makeover. The MTA has started replacing some of its long vacant
00:11subway newsstands with massive self-serve vending machines. Three of the new machines have already
00:16been installed with more planned at more than two dozen stations across the city. Now the transit
00:21agency says the machines are going into retail spaces that have sat empty for years. They're
00:29dark and vacant and like I said creepy but not everybody's thrilled. Some strap hangers say the
00:34machines are just another example of technology replacing good old-fashioned people mourning the
00:39loss of old newsstands where commuters could grab a newspaper a drink and chat with the person behind
00:44the counter. Others say they're practical especially for New Yorkers who just want to get their drink and
00:49catch their train. Now the MTA says the vending machines are part of a broader effort to fill
00:54empty retail spaces in the subway system while adapting to the way people are actually shopping
00:58today.
