00:00I wonder at what point we don't have to be introducing ourselves all the time.
00:03It's okay though, it's funny.
00:03Nice to meet you.
00:04Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're looking at bandmates that eventually became romantically linked.
00:10For this list, we're focusing on couples that weren't together prior to the band being formed,
00:14so anyone who was already dating will not be included.
00:18I'm like, dude, are you gonna kiss me or what?
00:21I don't think we can deny what we were feeling.
00:24Emma Watkins and Lachlan Gillespie, The Wiggles.
00:27For years, they have entertained children around the globe with their catalogue of wholesome and often educational songs.
00:33In 2012, two new replacement members, Emma Watkins and Lachlan Gillespie, were added to the lineup.
00:39The two grew close during their first year in the band, and by 2013, they entered a secret relationship.
00:45They went public in 2015, and months after that, they announced their engagement.
00:50Describe your life.
00:51Wiggly, beautiful, happy, beautiful.
01:00Their wedding occurred the following year, with fellow member Anthony Page serenading them with a bagpipes performance.
01:15Unfortunately, their intense touring schedule with the Wiggles made it impossible for them to go on a honeymoon,
01:20let alone foster a long-term marriage.
01:22The two split in 2018, and while they still work together, they have both found new partners.
01:28Lockie says it was Emma, a professional ballerina, who showed him how to dance.
01:32And Lockie, a trained singer, taught his wife to sing.
01:36Hayley Williams and Taylor York, Paramore.
01:38They are the very definition of a slow-burn romance.
01:41When Taylor York first joined Paramore in 2007, his future girlfriend Hayley Williams was already in a couple with their
01:47fellow band member, Josh Farrow.
01:49There's always like little ideas that happen every now and then that are new and that are exciting and, you
01:54know, make us, you know, feel like we might be ready to start the process over again.
01:58Though they broke up that year, she and York remained platonic bandmates for over a decade.
02:02In the 2020s, fans began speculating that the two were much more than musical collaborators, citing Instagram stories and song
02:10lyrics as proof.
02:11In 2022, they officially confirmed they were dating, to the delight of shippers everywhere.
02:17Williams even went on to explain that their 2023 track, Liar, was about her realizing her true feelings for him.
02:23I liked you, but you always knew the truth.
02:30While some fans have since speculated that there might be trouble in Paradise, others hope their bond is endgame.
02:37Who have you guys been together? You and the band?
02:40We... Oh, there we are.
02:42Lux Interior and Poison Ivy, The Cramps.
02:44Some bandmates opt for a slower start to a relationship, and others know right away they want to date one
02:50another.
02:50Rock stars Lux Interior and Poison Ivy of The Cramps definitely fall into the second category.
02:55The name of the album is Stay Sick, and the reason that we called it Stay Sick is because we're
03:00sick and tired of rock and roll getting such a good name.
03:03They met as college students in 1972, and by 1976, they had staked their claim within the punk scene.
03:09It wasn't long before they cemented themselves as a power couple, whose intense passion for one another helped fuel their
03:15raunchier lyrics.
03:16The good things happening in rock and roll, like, happen in the regular world, and we don't like that.
03:22We'd like to keep it unhealthy and sick like it's supposed to be.
03:26As the years went by, the two never stopped loving or working with one another, even as other members of
03:32the band came and went.
03:33They remained together happily for over three decades, until Interior's untimely death in 2009.
03:38Rock and roll never was a trend, like Acid House, or Calypso, or, you know, Cha Cha Cha.
03:46Rock and roll was a bigger thing.
03:47Grace Slick and Paul Kantner, Jefferson Airplane.
03:51Both of us toured Europe for the first time with a band called The Doors,
03:54and what we're going to do is talk here a little bit about what we can remember of that period
03:59of time.
04:01Yeah, you can remember something.
04:03Though they were considered some of the trailblazers of psychedelic rock,
04:06one thing they didn't invent was an inter-band coupling.
04:09Rhythm guitarist Paul Kantner and keyboardist Grace Slick
04:12initially began as purely platonic members when Jefferson Airplane formed in 1966.
04:17In fact, the latter was reportedly committed to another man,
04:20all while Kantner pined for her from the sidelines.
04:23Finally got a chance to shoot his shot in 1969, and the two quickly fell for one another.
04:28One, Paul and myself, but he thinks we're, uh, unusually funny, to laugh at.
04:33While they never wed, they welcomed their daughter to the world in 1971,
04:37and released multiple projects with one another.
04:40Even after she broke things off in 1975,
04:42the two remained collaborators within the newly formed Jefferson Starship for years.
04:47It's just a long time.
04:48Mm, mm.
04:50Do you think it's time to stop?
04:53Is he getting a strain now?
04:55Look at all the gray hair I have.
04:58In the late 1990s, they took the indie scene by storm with their LA-based rock band.
05:04While Jenny Lewis and Blake Sennett proved to be solid collaborators in Rilo-Kiley,
05:08they showed they were a successful romantic couple as well.
05:10That's awesome! I love the sharing! The sharing is just so awesome!
05:15Shubop, Shubop, Shubop.
05:15No, no, you're Shubop.
05:17I'm Shubop.
05:17You're her!
05:19And that the two dated throughout the turn of the century,
05:21and the release of their debut album in 2001,
05:24before breaking up in 2002.
05:25Luckily, that did not stop them from continuing to work together.
05:29I never felt so wicked
05:32As when I willed our love to die
05:36They remained bonded through music,
05:38even when it was about one another.
05:40Their creative partnership seemingly came to an end as well in the early 2010s,
05:44when the group officially disbanded.
05:46And in our solo projects, it's not.
05:49We get to be the king.
05:51You know, respectfully.
05:52The queen.
05:53The queen.
05:54The queen.
05:55The queen.
05:55The king.
05:56The king.
05:56However, Rilo Kylie made their comeback in 2025,
06:00and it's hard not to hope their relationship will as well.
06:03Wyclef Jean and Lauren Hill.
06:04The Fugees.
06:05While some romantically linked bandmates can continue working together after breaking up,
06:10others end up quitting the group altogether.
06:12The latter was unfortunately the case for the Fugees.
06:15When they initially went their separate ways in 1997,
06:18many assumed it was so each member could pursue a solo career.
06:21It wasn't until 2012 that the truth came out.
06:24Past the relationship,
06:27I can't be blamed for the future of an individual.
06:33In his memoir,
06:34Wyclef Jean revealed that he and Lauren Hill had been having an affair
06:37despite him getting married to Marie-Claude Annette in 1994.
06:41Their fling continued until 1997,
06:43when Hill became pregnant and claimed it was Jean's.
06:46Are you with child?
06:51Don't blush on me now.
06:53Actually, yes.
06:54Yes, I am.
06:55When that turned out to be a lie,
06:56it signaled both the end of their love and the group as a whole.
07:00You didn't know,
07:01well,
07:02either you didn't know or she didn't know
07:03whether her first child was yours or Rohan Marley's?
07:07Yeah, I mentioned it all in the book.
07:08Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa,
07:10the E Street Band.
07:11Not every relationship between group members ends in heartbreak.
07:15Some, like Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa of the E Street Band,
07:18have kept the flame alight for decades.
07:20After meeting at a bar in the 1980s,
07:22Scialfa soon joined the group as a backup singer.
07:24He says,
07:25it's like on stage,
07:26you know,
07:26but as soon as I get my foot off the stage.
07:28It's over, baby.
07:29It's over.
07:31I'm only boss for three hours.
07:33Then I surrender the title.
07:34Happily.
07:35The two dated other people for years,
07:37until Springsteen separated from his wife in 1988.
07:40That year,
07:41he and Scialfa began dating.
07:43What are the complexities of a long-term relationship?
07:46People are imperfect.
07:47They're flawed.
07:48So when you're young and you get into a relationship,
07:51you always think love holds some simplistic promise of completion.
07:55Though they were criticized,
07:57their love prevailed through the gossip.
07:58They had their first child in 1990
08:00and were married by 1991.
08:03Their fairy tale doesn't end there.
08:04They raised their children privately
08:06and welcomed their first grandchild in 2022.
08:09Through it all,
08:10they've continued to perform together
08:12and do not show signs of stopping anytime soon.
08:15I had an enormous amount of guidance and inspiration.
08:19And, you know,
08:20I can't overstate it.
08:21You know,
08:21it's,
08:22I've been lucky.
08:23Debbie Harry and Chris Stein.
08:25The Stilettos.
08:26Even if an intimate bond doesn't work out,
08:28doesn't mean you have to cut a former partner out entirely.
08:31Chris Stein and Debbie Harry are the perfect example of this.
08:34The two met while working in the Stilettos in the 1970s,
08:37and they began dating soon afterward.
08:39They eventually split off and formed Blondie,
08:41where they achieved worldwide success together as bandmates and partners.
08:45We, you know,
08:47as frustrating as things were,
08:49sometimes we always ended up with some kind of,
08:51you know,
08:52ironic joke or something.
08:54Even after Blondie disbanded,
08:56they remained significant others until 1987.
08:58It was then that the two sought treatment for their substance use,
09:02which coincided with the end of their time together.
09:07Although they were no longer romantically or professionally linked,
09:11they remained close.
09:12Decades later,
09:13they are still good friends,
09:14and Stein has even served as a godfather to Harry's daughters.
09:18Years gone by,
09:19I've realized that it really wasn't a mistake,
09:22as the legend has it.
09:24Gwen Stefani and Tony Cannell.
09:26No doubt.
09:27We were dating.
09:27Nobody knew,
09:28and we had to keep it totally secret,
09:30because if the band found out,
09:31they would be pissed.
09:32I was definitely concerned about what everybody else in the band would say or do.
09:37One thing that is practically guaranteed with any intergroup relationship
09:40is some incredible music about said pairing.
09:43This was the case for Gwen Stefani and Tony Cannell,
09:46whose breakup led to a truly iconic breakup track.
09:56No doubt formed in 1987,
09:58and they started dating shortly afterward.
10:00They initially kept it under wraps,
10:02as they felt they were breaking the rules by seeing one another.
10:05They dated throughout the early 1990s,
10:07until they broke up in 1994,
10:09amongst other issues with the band.
10:10Cannell and Stefani became a couple.
10:13They date for seven years.
10:15It was their split in 1994 that changed everything for the band.
10:20While it signaled the end of their love,
10:22it marked the beginning of their breakthrough.
10:24The fallout served as inspiration for Stefani,
10:27who wrote several songs,
10:28including Don't Speak.
10:29She and Cannell have maintained a professional bond,
10:32and performed together throughout each reunion.
10:34It's reached way, way higher than we ever thought it would go.
10:38We didn't even think the record would come out,
10:39let alone go to number one,
10:41which is just ridiculous, you know?
10:43But don't take it away.
10:44Yeah, don't, yeah.

11:01Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham,
11:03Fritz.
11:04Lindsay and I will always be, like,
11:06connected like this, you know?
11:09And we still are.
11:10Given that they have a whole album about their relationships,
11:13it's no surprise that Fleetwood Mac is on this list.
11:16The short-lived marriage between bassist John
11:18and Sessions artist-turned-keyboardist Christine McVie
11:20is dramatic enough.
11:21However, Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham
11:24put their drama to shame.
11:25My relationship with Stevie is fragmented.
11:30The two met in high school and joined the band Fritz.
11:33When the group ended, their romance began.
11:35They released music under the name Buckingham Nicks
11:37until they joined Fleetwood Mac in 1975.
11:40They broke up a year later,
11:41and several iconic songs followed.
11:43And it's really hard, you know,
11:45when you break up with somebody,
11:47or somebody breaks up with you,
11:48and you're in this band.
11:49And guess what?
11:50Guess who you have to see the next day
11:52in the hotel, in the breakfast room?
11:54That person.
11:56The cherry on top was Nicks' affair
11:57with Mick Fleetwood in the late 70s,
11:59which reportedly hurt Buckingham even more.
12:02Their connection seemed dead in the water,
12:04but as of 2025,
12:06the two have begun to reconcile.
12:08It was, um,
12:11there were a set of unknowns going into it,
12:14and everything has just come back better than ever.
12:17Which romantically linked band members
12:19do you think have made the best music together?
