00:00Vogue and the Met clearly aren't afraid to court controversy.
00:03Following last year's Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez-funded Met Gala,
00:07the theme of the museum's Spring 2027 Costume Institute exhibition
00:11and the accompanying star-studded ball will be John Galliano Horizons.
00:23There is no one more deserving of an exhibition of this scale than John Galliano,
00:28Vogue's Anna Wintour shared in a statement.
00:30His body of work at Dior, Givenchy, Margiela, his namesake label, and more
00:34combines erudition and creativity, darkness and light,
00:38the past, the present, the future, all smashing together in a brilliant way.
00:42The definition of a fashion visionary,
00:44Galliano is only the third living designer to receive a solo show at the museum,
00:48joining Yves Saint Laurent and Ray Kawakubo.
00:51His exhibition is also destined to be the Costume Institute's most polarizing in years.
00:56In 2011, a video of the inebriated designer making anti-Semitic comments at a Paris cafe went viral.
01:02In the wake of the clip, which included Galliano declaring,
01:06I love Hitler, he was fired from his role at Dior,
01:09where he'd served as creative director for 15 years to much acclaim.
01:12He was convicted of a hate crime in a Paris court, publicly apologized,
01:17went to rehab to address his alcohol and drug addiction,
01:20and retreated from fashion for several years.
01:23Quote,
01:23It was a disgusting thing, foul thing that I did,
01:26Galliano recalled in the 2024 documentary High and Low John Galliano.
01:30It was just horrific.
01:31I couldn't recognize that person.
01:33In 2014, after time spent learning about Jewish history with rabbis and the Anti-Defamation League,
01:39Galliano returned as the creative director of Maison Margiela,
01:42a role he'd hold for the next decade.
01:45As the most powerful woman in fashion,
01:47Wintour played an instrumental role in his appointment
01:49and showed her support by wearing one of Galliano's designs to an event just a few months later.
01:55In a statement,
01:55the Vogue global editorial director promised the Met exhibition
01:59will examine the good, the bad, and the ugly of Galliano's career thus far.
02:03Quote,
02:04He's a great designer and his career isn't defined by a moment,
02:07something that he will live with for the rest of his life,
02:10she said in a statement.
02:11The exhibition won't shy away from any of the darkness in John's past.
02:16It's part of what has shaped him.
02:17The show will take in the full arc of his career and grapple with all of it.
02:22Both Wintour and Andrew Bolton,
02:23curator in charge of the Met's Costume Institute,
02:26had been considering a Galliano exhibition for years.
02:29But the choice to move forward at a time of rising anti-Semitism
02:32has ruffled plenty of feathers.
02:34As reported by the New York Times,
02:36the duo met with some of New York City's most influential rabbis
02:39and Jewish leaders during the show's early planning stages to get their thoughts.
02:43One of those in attendance was Temple Emmanuel Rabbi Joshua Davidson,
02:47who acknowledged that many in the Jewish community
02:50may find the exhibition's theme problematic.
02:53But as he told the Times,
02:54It would be powerful, poignant, and productive
02:57if they were able to leverage it as an opportunity
02:59to teach about the reality of anti-Semitism
03:02and somehow wrap into the exhibition
03:04the importance of fighting back
03:06and the dangers of anti-Semitism in this moment.
