We met up with The Vaccines at The Great Escape 2011. They share their thoughts on releasing their latest album, and categorise the two types of bands that exist.
Transcript
00:07I'm Arne from The Vaccines.
00:09I'm Justin from The Vaccines.
00:11I think for us getting the album out felt really good because there was so much speculation
00:15and people had some pretty big opinions, negative and positive, about us without really having
00:23heard much stuff. I think now we've got a body of work out there. I think people have decided
00:30whether or not they want to listen to us or whether or not they just want to shut off.
00:34I don't think you can take it or leave it now. I think I'm really happy with the album.
00:39We're not playing shows for curious people, we're playing shows for people that have bought
00:43the album and like it. It just feels real now and I really like that.
00:49There's two types of bands. I think there are bands that make records and then try and recreate
00:53that live and then there are bands who put on a good live show and try and recreate that
00:57on record. I think we're definitely the latter. So for us playing live and putting on a good
01:02show is fucking important. I think as well, like we were saying earlier, sometimes shows
01:10are more energetic than other times but I think it's important that we really believe what
01:14we do and we never like, I think it has to be real. I think it has to be real
01:18and like
01:18playing to people is a really, it's like a good way of like showing your passion about
01:24what you do. I just like the idea of having more stuff for people to listen to really and
01:28like I personally don't like listening to live records. I can't really think of one I like.
01:33Oh shit. But like, I saw a Nirvana CD the other day like, I didn't realise they'd released
01:43like live at Reading actually as a CD. I was talking about milking it.
01:47Surely that's been done afterwards. Well maybe it was done at the time but I'd never seen it before
01:51and like, yeah I just, I always think that like, it was for records the other day but I always
01:55think
01:55the live albums are just a quick, they're an easy way to make a quick buck aren't they?
02:01They are though. We just released one. Yeah there was, like it was, it was um, it was record store
02:07there.
02:08Yeah, yeah, yeah. It was like a thousand copies or whatever, yeah. It was our major labels idea.
02:14All in support of our independent record stores of course. I don't know how we can prepare really.
02:19I think it's going to be a pretty busy summer. Sometime we were doing 45 festivals.
02:24Um, I think just, er, I think we really feel confident that we're, er, you know, we're good at what
02:29we do.
02:30We've been throwing the deep end quite often and like, we've had to raise our game quite often.
02:35And it's definitely going to happen this summer again, you know, and I will just, you know, we just have
02:39to...
02:40I'm really, I'm just excited. Yeah, it's going to be a challenge and we're just, I'm looking forward to it.
02:44Yeah, I mean it's hard, like I don't really write habitually, I write therapeutically.
02:48Um, and like, I don't know, we've got like a few, like we have got like, we've been working on
02:53new stuff.
02:53And er, but like really like, so many people ask us that.
02:58But I think because there was, like, because there was so much that preceded the album,
03:01I think people could get the album's only been out for eight weeks.
03:04And so like, we just, I'm not bored of, none of us are bored of like playing this.
03:08I still get a kick playing all these songs and I still feel that they're relevant to us as people
03:13and to us as a band.
03:14And so like, yeah, we're working on new stuff, but I don't think any of us are in like, like,
03:18you know, like we, like, like I said the other day, like, I like the idea of kind of releasing
03:23like,
03:23they're like touring new EPs and that sort of thing.
03:26But in terms of actually like, like a new album, I'm not in any hurry to do that.
03:30I don't think any of us are really. Just want to enjoy this one.
