00:00For generations, there's been an expectation that each new age group would enjoy greater opportunities than the one before it.
00:07But new analysis carried out by the Institute for Fiscal Studies suggests that progress has slowed significantly for today's young
00:14adults.
00:15We've been on the streets of Liverpool to ask, do young people these days have a tougher start to adulthood?
00:20It's tough in different ways.
00:23I look after older ladies, so I'm a carer.
00:28So, like, my general, the demographic I hang out with is, like, 80s and 90s, so.
00:34I'm 56, so when I was starting work, it was all good.
00:41Yes, my son's just passed out degree, 2-1 in cyber security, £80,000 in debt.
00:50Went for an interview the other day, two interviews, following day, unsuccessful for a stacked shelf stacker.
00:58Can't get a job in a coffee shop.
01:01There's so much online nowadays.
01:04Like, speaking as someone who's got mental health concerns, it is so difficult to, like, pull yourself out of that.
01:13And you're just exposed to, like, perfection because everything's curated online.
01:18And it just makes you miserable.
01:20I'm beginning to wonder, was education and college a good thing now?
01:25I don't know.
01:26No, because my daughter graduated university and she's going back to university to do her master's.
01:33She's just been promoted and she's almost 30.
01:38Our rent is, we've just been informed our rent's going up to £880 a month, yeah.
01:43No, I think the kids have got it a lot harder.
01:48It's scary.
01:49There's a new housing estate that's being built near us and they've got, like, a certain amount of, like, rent
01:54to buy, affordable housing.
01:55But it's like, in that entire estate, there's 17 whole houses that are rent to buy.
02:02And that list for approvals is going to be insane.
02:05So we've applied for it, but I don't think we're going to get it.
02:09It's a personal choice.
02:12I was brought up with good worth ethics and I transferred it down to my daughter.
02:19So, yeah.
02:21You get what you, get what you, if you put enough effort in, you get what you achieve.
02:29The job market, my partner's trying to look for a job at the moment and it is vicious out there.
02:36So, like, the job market's in tatters, mental health is in the toilet, you know, cost of living's insane.
02:45We just have to support them and hope something will come along the way.
02:49But not to get a shelf stacker's job and you're on a 2-1 degree.
02:57That's scary.
02:58Thank you, baby.
