Helen Mirren and Sam Worthington star in The Debt, the powerful story of Rachel Singer, a former Mossad agent who endeavoured to capture and bring to trial a notorious Nazi war criminal.
Transcript
00:13The film is about the pursuit of a suspected Nazi war criminal by three young Mossad agents who
00:22believe him to be working and hiding, I suppose, working under an alias in Soviet-controlled East
00:29Berlin in the mid-60s, but unusually it also examines the same events from the perspective
00:35of these characters when they're older, 30 years later.
00:39The character Vogel is inspired by Mengele, who was a really, really nasty piece of work,
00:48which is awful. I mean, I only started reading about him and I stopped immediately at him.
00:55He is a horrible, horrible person.
00:58Stefan is the leader of the three young Mossad agents and all three of them are very much
01:08in it together and they're there to take a Nazi officer out of Berlin to get him to Israel
01:14to try him for crimes against humanity.
01:16It's so disgusting and thrilling in the same way.
01:27Helen and Tom, both of whom are next to me, are veterans of my resume, as it were.
01:33If a director especially asks you to work with him again, it's an incredible affirmation, you
01:39know, so you go into the job with a great sense of sort of relaxation, knowing that they know
01:44what they're getting, if you know what I mean. And then, of course, it's great to work with
01:48old muckers, you know, that you've been with before.
01:51She's wonderful. I like her. No, I'm very, I love her. I'm very fond of her. I worked with
01:56her a few times and I hope to work with her a few times more because she's a cracker.
02:00To think I'm playing a young Helen Mirren, fail, right? You don't succeed at that. So I tried
02:06not to think about it that way. I tried to think like, okay, I'm sharing a role with this
02:11great woman.
02:14My car is waiting outside.
02:26It's a sort of meditation about history and the claim that the past has on the future
02:32and so on and so forth.
02:34It's a great date movie because it's so exciting and there's a mystery in it, but also there's
02:41like romance and drama. It kind of has everything.
02:43Big themes in there, but at the same time, it's an on-the-edge-of-your-seat thriller.
02:49There will be scenes where, yeah, women will get their money's worth.
02:54But I can't be more specific than that because I've been told, at pain of death, say no more.
03:00It's just great, great storytelling.
