00:00Ron DeSantis and Florida's Board of Education recently passed controversial new standards in their state.
00:06They explicitly attempt to downplay the horrific history of slavery,
00:09with one of the new standards requiring teachers to tell students, quote,
00:13how slaves developed skills, which in some instances could be applied for their personal benefit.
00:18The new standards have been widely criticized, and Vice President Kamala Harris took a stand against them recently,
00:24to which DeSantis responded with an invitation to debate her on it.
00:27Saying recently in a letter to the Vice President,
00:30In Florida, we are unafraid to have an open and honest dialogue about the issues.
00:34So given your grave concern, which I assume is sincere, about what you think our standards say,
00:39I am officially inviting you back down to Florida to discuss our African American history standards.
00:45Well, Harris has returned, and has also now publicly responded to the Florida governor's invitation,
00:50once she says warrants no debate.
00:52Right here in Florida, they plan to teach students that enslaved people benefited from slavery.
00:59They insult us in an attempt to gaslight us, and now they attempt to legitimize these unnecessary debates
01:12with a proposal that most recently came in, of a politically motivated roundtable.
01:21But Harris goes on, criticizing the very notion of debating history with DeSantis.
01:25Well, I'm here in Florida.
01:29And I will tell you, there is no roundtable, no lecture, no invitation.
01:36We will accept to debate an undeniable fact.
01:44There were no redeeming qualities of slavery.
