00:00Why do we think they are taking such extreme measures to prevent or deter or suppress our right to vote?
00:16We need to immediately address a number of issues that demand priority and immediate attention.
00:24And that relates to getting people back to work.
00:27It means investing in infrastructure and creating millions of new jobs.
00:32It means fighting for health care for all people, as opposed to what the Trump administration is doing right now,
00:37which is they're in court trying to get rid of the Obama-Biden Affordable Care Act.
00:42It means fighting for criminal justice reform and police reform.
00:47A number of issues that are immediate in terms of how they are impacting people are the priority issues of our ticket and what will be our administration.
00:56And make no mistake about it, if you line up what we have in terms of the current occupant of the White House,
01:03somebody who has spent full time trying to sow hate and division among people,
01:07who has spent full time looking in a mirror instead of addressing three of the biggest crises that our country has ever faced,
01:14two of recent making and one that has been around for centuries, meaning a public health crisis,
01:20it's an economic crisis, and finally a reckoning in a more broad level around systemic racism in our country.
01:28It is Joe Biden, together with me, who are going to take these on as priority issues and address them immediately,
01:34because we need our country to heal and we need to do better.
01:38And that's a big part of the plan, which is build back better.
01:41How do you plan to measure your success as a vice president?
01:47First, I plan to measure my success as a candidate for vice president by doing everything I can to not only support Joe Biden,
01:58but to encourage and to remind people of what is at stake at this election.
02:04Because I do, I firmly believe, I firmly in my heart and in my soul know that this is the most important election of our lifetime.
02:13It really is. It really is. There is so much on the line.
02:18People are dying. Over 165 folks in just a matter of months have died in our country.
02:24Disproportionately black and brown people.
02:26Black people are twice as likely to die from COVID than other people.
02:30Let's look at the issues that are at play in terms of what we need to do to resuscitate the economy
02:37and understand that African-American small businesses, the numbers I've seen are staggering around those that are,
02:44will be closed forever because they've not been given priority around the relief packages and the relief that they should receive.
02:54These are such big issues that are on the line in this election.
02:58And so I first am thinking about and working on what I must do to be a success on this ticket.
03:07And part of it is it's going to be the success of all of us, which is we got to make sure folks vote against great obstacles.
03:15You know, we always say people got to vote.
03:17But let's also be clear.
03:19In many states in our country, there are state legislatures and frankly Republicans who are putting in place laws
03:26and have been putting in place laws designed to stop black folks from voting.
03:30And, you know, I have to tell you, yes, we know it's an injustice.
03:34We know it's a violation of the Voting Rights Act.
03:36We know it's a violation of civil rights.
03:38But here's the thing that I also urge all the friends to think about, which is to sit back and say,
03:43why are they trying to stop us from voting?
03:47Like, let's ask that question.
03:49Why do we think they are taking such extreme measures to prevent or deter or suppress our right to vote?
04:01And I will tell you the answer.
04:04It is because when we vote, things change.
04:08When we vote, we get things like the passage of the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act and the Fair Housing Act.
04:15When we vote, we have the ability to say, what's happening right now does not meet my needs.
04:23It does not meet the needs of my children.
04:27And I'm going to step up and change the direction that this is taking.
04:32So when I think about this election, look, my mother taught me you got to deal with what's right in front of you.
04:39Because, you know, you staring down the road, that thing over there, you might trip over this thing right here.
04:43And this thing right here is we've got 80 days to get our act together.
04:50And I mean, my, I'm talking about myself, everybody else out there, I know you got your act together.
04:55But to be ready.
04:57And part of what I'd like to encourage is, hey, let's all have a plan for voting.
05:02Like, let's start thinking about what's our plan for voting.
05:06And let's find out, is my state a state that has early voting?
05:11In some states, you can vote as many as 20 days before the actual election.
05:15Let's know that.
05:17And then look at the calendar and say, you know what, I think that will be a good day for me to vote before the election day.
05:23Find out if you can vote by mail.
05:26And then find a sample ballot so that you can make sure you know how to fill it out properly.
05:32And get it in the mail early.
05:35Right?
05:36If it's going to a polling place, let's figure out how you can go and be safe to do that.
05:41But that's what I'd encourage people to do right now.
05:44Have, let's all say we're going to have a plan for voting.
05:48And then just execute on that plan.
05:51If you guys do end up winning in November, you will have a limited amount of days in the legislative branch.
05:58We know it's been five months now that Breonna Taylor has been killed.
06:04And right now, one of her killers does not have a job, but could go anywhere in the country and have that job.
06:13And then two others are still employed.
06:15So what I want to know is, in these next few days, while you're still in the Senate, what are you willing to do to push her name forward and make sure that what happened to her does not happen to other black women?
06:30Well, you can look at my history on the case of Breonna Taylor to know that I was, I think, the first elected person or national elected leader to speak her name.
06:43And I've been speaking her name.
06:45I have talked with her mother, Ms. Palmer.
06:49It is a travesty what happened to Breonna Taylor.
06:54And we need to speak her name and we need to demand justice.
06:57We need to demand justice for her.
06:59I have seen too many cases of not only unarmed black folks being killed, but women.
07:06And we need to speak their name and understand that we have to have justice.
07:13And so I will continue to speak the name of Breonna Taylor and fight for the right for justice in her memory, justice for her mother and justice for that community.
07:24We need to speak the name of Breonna Taylor and justice for her mother and justice for her mother and justice for her mother and justice for her mother and justice for her mother and justice for her mother and justice for her mother and justice for her mother and justice for her mother and justice for her mother and justice for her mother and justice for her mother and justice for her mother and justice for her mother and justice for her mother and justice for her mother and justice for her mother and justice for her mother and justice for her mother and justice for her mother and justice for her mother and justice for her mother and justice for her mother and justice for her mother and justice for her mother and justice for her mother and justice for her mother and justice for her mother and justice for her mother and justice for her mother and justice for her mother and justice for her mother and justice for her mother and justice for her mother and justice for her mother and justice for her mother and justice for her mother and justice for her mother and justice for her mother and justice for her mother and justice for her mother and justice for her mother and
