Sportscene brings you extended highlights of Celtic against Dundee.

Transcript
02:003, 2, 1...
02:22Liam Scales is suspended for Celtic, but Cameron Carter Vickers is back, having been out since last October.
02:27Record signing Casper Hu comes straight into the side, with the other new arrival Camilo Duran on the left.
02:34That apart, it's a fairly familiar looking Celtic team, with Newgren, Johnston, Yang, Tierney and Trusty all returning from World
02:42Cup campaigns.
02:44A few changes to the Dundee team that started their final League Cup group match with Clyde.
02:49There's a debut for new keeper Owen Goodman, who joins on loan from Crystal Palace.
02:53He was in Canada's World Cup squad with Johnston.
02:56Idris Odutayo comes into the back line, as does former Bournemouth man Owen Bevan.
03:00Ethan Hamilton's in the engine room, having scored the goal that looked like putting Celtic out of the Scottish Cup
03:06last season.
03:07And what a goal it was.
03:09And so another season begins for these two different ambitions for the campaign, of course.
03:16But it is the same ambition for both tonight.
03:19Dundee beat the champions for the first time in 24 years last year, and came close to knocking them out
03:25of the Scottish Cup.
03:26So, so close.
03:28As they look for a win here for the first time since 2001, when Ivano Benetti outfoxed Martin O'Neill.
03:35And all those years and decades on, the legendary Parkhead boss begins their first full season in charge here, for
03:42the first time since 2004.
03:46And taking his Celtic trophy haul from seven to nine, when he least expected to do so.
03:56Dundee looking to start brightly. You have to when you come here.
04:04There's Trey Wright.
04:08Break signing Murray's way, still he continues.
04:12Major 34 now.
04:15Still be a big player for Stephen Cresley.
04:18Scott Patterson there beside him.
04:25Oh, it's a poor ball by Wright. How much punishment is there going to be?
04:31None is the answer.
04:33First glimpse at goal for Kasper Hu in a Celtic shirt.
04:39And Trey Wright's breathing a sigh of relief.
04:42You just can't do that here.
04:45You can't do that anywhere, but particularly here.
04:56Matthew McDermott's given the free kick, but there was an argument to say Dundee and an advantage there.
05:04A challenge between Hu and Astley there, and then the striker went in on Finnegan.
05:15A little bit of respite for the Dundee defense because they've had to be so concentrated in these early stages.
05:24Right takes.
05:27Murray's managed to get the flick on to that.
05:31Away by Engels.
05:36Here's Trinnegan.
05:38Back to Hamilton.
05:41No foul this time.
05:43Yang wins it back.
05:44Here's Duran.
05:49Now Murray.
05:53Both teams contriving to give possession away.
05:56Cheaply.
05:58The Celtic fans shout man on in unison.
06:01Austin trusty.
06:09McGregor.
06:11Newgreen.
06:15Yang for Tierney.
06:17Chance.
06:18And it's wide.
06:22It was Newgreen initially.
06:24Kasper Hu is frustrated with himself and little wonder.
06:30It's well worked by Celtic this.
06:33Benjamin Newgreen with the initial effort and it fell Hu's way.
06:39And puts it past.
06:41He's had two big chances already.
06:45Although it hits a few years ago.
06:49And it's broken nicely here for Dundee in the box and it's just clipped the side net from Riley.
06:58Well there's another warning for Celtic that Dundee will be a threat this evening.
07:04Didn't really fall for either Wesley or Murray but you can see Riley trying to bend that in at the
07:09near post there.
07:20Tierney.
07:23Tierney.
07:25Newgreen with the effort's blocked when it comes back to him.
07:30Appeal for handball as Carter Vickers goes from distance.
07:35He's going to score the way out before.
07:41Remember that was always going to be ambitious from the centre back.
07:46What a relief for Celtic to see him back in the team though.
07:51That was clearly not his forte.
07:54He's a decent header back onto the pitch as well.
07:58I think they steal a march on them on week one but Dundee are here to play.
08:02They're looking at a shock opener here.
08:07Joe Bevan trying to touch it to Finnegan.
08:09He'll be regretting that now.
08:11Here goes Johnston.
08:12He's going to get there but Natayo does enough.
08:25Martin Anil back at the helm.
08:34Right for Joe Bevan.
08:37A bit of movement in navy blue ahead of him.
08:50Hamilton.
08:57And his goal here last season was so outstanding.
09:03Probably bettered it with one at Petaudry a few weeks later.
09:10And Hamilton as it pinched off him by Yang.
09:16Celtic supporters crying for it to be played forward quickly.
09:19It has been Nugren and Kasper Hu.
09:22And an important intervention.
09:26To prevent the Dane getting a clear sight on goal there.
09:31By Owen Bevan.
09:33This was better from Celtic.
09:34Bit more pace about it.
09:36Benjamin Nugren finding Hu.
09:39And Bevan did well.
09:43The three chances that was the toughest one for the new Celtic signing.
09:49They lost another bunch of players in the summer.
09:52Dundee.
09:54It's not quite as dramatic as last year but.
09:58Luke Graham going to Stoke.
10:00McCracken to Bradford.
10:01Ingram to Partick Thistle.
10:02Robertson went to India.
10:04The Celtic come through here with Yang.
10:08Just as he was pulling the trigger.
10:12Ashley gets in his way.
10:15It looked like it was opening up beautifully for the South Korean.
10:23And then a combination of he and Finnegan on the follow-up.
10:36Now Finnegan for Dundee.
10:39Joe Bevan.
10:43Will be a corner only.
10:47Kieran Tierney.
10:49Inventing that threatening Sinisalmo's goal.
10:55Again it's good positive play for Dundee.
10:57Yes Celtic have threatened but.
10:59Dundee have come here with a bit of a punch themselves.
11:06Tierney for Carter Vickers.
11:11Always a crucial time.
11:12The closing stages of a half at Selby Park.
11:17Visitors hold out.
11:20Tierney's cross.
11:21A good one.
11:22The header's wide though.
11:26Arnie Engels will be furious he's not got that in target.
11:31Because if it is it's probably 1-0.
11:35Nice ball in by Kieran Tierney.
11:37And Engels found himself exactly where he would have wanted to be there.
11:50But he's giving Celtic an advantage.
11:54Good officiating on this occasion.
11:56And Engels through the eye of the needle.
11:58And Tierney.
12:00Draws an excellent save out of the debutant Owen Goodman.
12:04That's good refereeing by Matthew McDermott.
12:06As you can clearly see he's waiting.
12:09For Celtic to take advantage.
12:12Which they did.
12:21Callum McGregor.
12:2312 years on from his debut.
12:28Captain.
12:32Yang for Engels.
12:35McGregor.
12:39Tierney from Yang.
12:40It's a good ball.
12:41And it's the first goal.
12:43Of Celtic season.
12:44And it's last season's top scorer.
12:51Who breaks the deadlock.
12:55Indyman Newgreen.
13:00Where Celtic would be without his goals last term.
13:04Is anyone's guess.
13:06He won't get an easier one than that potentially this season.
13:14So often he was the main man.
13:16For the champions.
13:18And their eventual way to the title.
13:22And they've got the early second half goal.
13:25And almost 60,000 home supporters were praying for.
13:31New men in the building.
13:33But it's one of the main men of last term.
13:37And eventually gives them the lead.
13:42Celtic are off and running.
13:50New green scoring.
13:51He managed 21 last season.
13:53That was four more than the now departed Dyson Maida.
14:01Tierney back to McGregor.
14:06And it's a lovely turn.
14:08By Duran.
14:13This is a whole lot better.
14:15More purpose.
14:17Without Celtic in the second half.
14:20That's a brilliant little spin away from Hamilton by Duran.
14:27Carter Vickers underneath that.
14:28Joe Bevan.
14:30Going to get.
14:31He involved immediately.
14:36I've been headed away there from Johnston.
14:38I was important.
14:39Now it's with Newgren.
14:42Who makes the run ahead of him.
14:45It's Casper Who.
14:46It's the chop on the other side.
14:49The front support was a little bit closer than it ultimately was.
15:01It's a nice play in the build-up by Celtic.
15:06Johnston for Duran.
15:11And we need another goal without conceding to Dretton St Mirren who are proudly sitting top of the embryonic premiership
15:22table.
15:29No one back though here's Joe Bevan stretching his legs.
15:34He's interesting.
15:35He's up against trusty here but the U.S. international deals with it well.
15:42And we've got to believe Dundee that a chance will come.
16:09Dundee's way in the aftermath of that.
16:13Yang's effort.
16:14Goodman got down but it's a foul by Kasper Hu.
16:20To look for that bottom left, the South Korea international.
16:30Tidied it up.
16:34Nerves around the ground for a split second there.
16:40Ingles.
16:42That's a lovely goal.
16:45Here's Yang.
16:48De Tierney.
16:52McGregor.
17:01No Duran for Johnston.
17:06Like the second goal to arrive.
17:10Promptly with Celtic.
17:13Who then finds Tierney.
17:16Right through it.
17:19Much more comfortable save for Goodman than the one he had to make from Tierney in the first half.
17:31Here goes Ingles.
17:34McGregor.
17:38Massic.
17:39Hit that by Callum McGregor though it didn't have the end product we've seen so often from him.
17:49Astley.
17:52Halliday.
17:55Forrest.
17:56It's a good ball!
17:58And Sinishawo.
18:00That's to make the save from Hay.
18:03As close as Dundee have come.
18:06And a timely warning to Martin O'Neill's men.
18:10That this isn't done yet.
18:17James Forrest.
18:20To Necti.
18:22Desperately trying to put the ball settle in front of him.
18:25It just wouldn't.
18:27And Robertson wanted too long.
18:32And the tile clears.
18:37James Forrest.
18:40Cow in for Donovan.
18:41As it comes.
18:44And just wide from Kasper Hu.
18:48He's wondering what he's got to do to score.
18:51He's had four chances in the game.
18:54That is seven goals in the Norwegian top flight.
18:57This season.
18:58In their summer calendar.
19:01He's been in goal scoring form.
19:04And it's as close as he's come.
19:06To breaking his duck.
19:20McGregor steals onto it.
19:23They fancy this now.
19:25It's opened up for him.
19:28Forrest.
19:32They try and find the killer blow.
19:34The post denies the skipper.
19:39Forrest with one of his trademark outside of the right boot efforts.
19:45Doesn't hit target.
19:47McGregor came close to doing so just before that.
19:51Opened up beautifully.
19:53For the Celtic captain.
19:57Next up for Celtic is a trip to Kilmarnock.
20:00On Sunday.
20:02Dundee host Aberdeen.
20:04The day before.
20:07Also facing the Dons in the League Cup.
20:09Celtic get to go to Tanadice.
20:12Venue.
20:14Where they last lost.
20:19Costly it looked.
20:21On the day.
20:23Tenekti.
20:24Gets it back.
20:27He was just waiting for that angle.
20:30It's eventually arrived.
20:31But he skies it.
20:34Just haven't been able to put Dundee to bed.
20:38Lovely little interchange with Forrest there.
20:42Annoyed.
20:44And he's not managed to keep that down.
20:49Sebastian Tenekti.
20:58Finnegan.
21:00He wanted too long there.
21:02He's managed to find Hamilton.
21:03Who does go for goal.
21:06As he tries to recreate a little bit of personal history.
21:10A wonderful Scottish Cup goal.
21:11This coming.
21:12This effort.
21:13Just as we go into the 90th minute.
21:17The games are going to be flowing faster this season because of the new laws.
21:21And also there's been no VAR interventions.
21:26And it sobs really.
21:30The yellow card comes out for Hay.
21:33For that on Carter Vickers.
21:45Flipped in by Finn Robertson.
21:48Only half away with Finnegan.
21:51Lashes it high over the bar.
21:54And he wonders what might have been.
22:00He's fallen to him in a good position.
22:11It is victory on day one for Martin O'Neill.
22:15And for Celtic.
22:18Well like at the end of last season they were made to sweat it out here.
22:22Like the opening day of last season.
22:25It is a slender win.
22:27Benjamin Newgrain with the goal.
22:29Early in the second half.
22:31Which is done for Dundee.
22:33Who pushed Celtic as they did.
22:35Plenty last term.
22:40And at the end of the day.
22:42It is a win.
22:43When you consider.
22:44Their title rivals of last season.
22:46Both slipped up in the opening weekend.
22:48They will absolutely take it.
22:51It could have been more.
22:53It maybe should have been more.
22:55Dundee had chances themselves.
22:57In either half.
22:57Particularly from Ashley Haley.
23:00As Sinisalo kept him out.
23:03But it is three points.
23:05For the champions.
23:07Whose impressive opening day.
23:09Record.
23:11Continues.
23:11Finished.
23:12In Glasgow's East End.
23:14Celtic won.
23:16Dundee nil.
23:19I think that in terms of the result.
23:21Obviously the most important thing.
23:23To win the game.
23:24I thought we created a number of chances in the match.
23:26But overall.
23:27I didn't think we played particularly well.
23:29I think that we could have.
23:30I think we could have played with a bit more intensity.
23:33Which I think we did in the second half.
23:34At least for a period.
23:37When we got the goal.
23:38I mean maybe we could have added to that.
23:40But overall.
23:42It was like a typical opening game of the season.
23:47For us in that sense.
23:49You know.
23:49We did enough to win the game.
23:51Big improvement for us.
23:52I think.
23:54Overall assessment is that.
23:55I'm exceptionally proud of the group.
23:57You know.
23:58We're at a real transitional moment.
23:59But I ask for bravery in our performance.
24:01I thought we were incredibly brave.
24:04Brave with the ball.
24:05But also brave without the ball.
24:07With our high pressure.
24:11And also.
24:13I couldn't be prouder.
24:14In how hard the players worked tonight.
24:17You know.
24:18I think they gave an exceptional performance.
24:20And one that we can certainly build on.
24:23And one that sets standards for the season.
24:26You know.
24:26The way we went about our business.
24:28How hard we ran against the ball.
24:29All of these things are standards.
24:31That the players have set tonight.
24:34Despite all the speculation about Callum McGregor.
24:35It seems that he is definitely staying at Celtic.
24:38For this season.
24:40For this season.
24:41And forever more is it?
24:42I hope he stays here until he's 45.
24:45But.
24:45Yeah.
24:46Of course.
24:46I think that he had a conversation with our CEO.
24:49And he's got a couple of years left to run.
24:51I think he.
24:52I think he loves it.
24:54You know.
24:54He's been a big winner.
24:56For the football club.
24:57And yeah.
24:58And he has.
24:59He has definitely got.
25:00But he's.
25:01To me.
25:02Not that I'm talking about this at this minute.
25:04But he's potential managerial material.
25:07Big time.
25:08And coaching.
25:09So it's all of those things in the.
25:11In the future to look forward to.
25:13But for me now.
25:14Selfishly.
25:15I just like him as a player.
25:16To see what he can do this season again.
25:19I think some of our pundits thought you were a bit doom and gloom about Dundee's chances.
25:22Pre-match Stephen.
25:23But is it about managing expectations?
25:25And in a way.
25:26Does that take some of the pressure off the players right now?
25:28It's just about performance.
25:29It's not about worrying about league positions.
25:31Come the end of the season.
25:32And it's not doom and gloom.
25:34You know.
25:34I think anybody that knows me.
25:35It's reality.
25:36I only speak the truth.
25:38We've lost so many key players.
25:40We've brought in players.
25:41But it takes time.
25:42It's transitional.
25:43I think if you look at Dundee over the period of the last.
25:47You know.
25:4725 years.
25:48They've maybe spent 10 of those in the championship.
25:51The average league position in the Premier League is 10th.
25:55So it's not doom and gloom.
25:56It's reality.
25:58We know where we are.
26:01But we know that with a lot of hard work.
26:04A lot of resilience.
26:06A lot of character.
26:07Then we can become an effective team.
26:09Before the next match for Celtic.
26:12Would you expect much movement?
26:14Well we're hoping.
26:15You know.
26:16I don't want to turn around and say to you we expect something.
26:19But we are doing our utmost to get some people in.
26:23Because it is naturally it's important.
26:26It's important.
26:28And with the.
26:30With what is it.
26:32About 15 days or something.
26:33They got there.
26:34To the Champions League game or something.
26:36They got there.
26:36So you would like.
26:38You know.
26:38Obviously.
26:39That's a difficult game for us.
26:41No doubt.
26:41We would like to have some people in.
26:43But we are.
26:44We are trying our utmost.
26:45Which positions.
26:47Are your priorities.
26:48Would you say.
26:49There's no point in me letting you into that.
26:51You know.
26:51We are.
26:52We're looking.
26:53And just in case somebody leaves the football club as well too.
26:56So we'll be looking to.
26:57We'll be looking to.
27:00Put some players together.
27:02Hoping that maybe.
27:03Maybe transfer speculation might disappear.
27:06Who knows.
27:07Hardly likely.
27:08But it might do.
27:09Talking about players maybe perhaps leaving.
27:11You know.
27:12When we talk about Johnson and Engels.
27:13Engels.
27:14But overall.
27:15We are looking to try and improve the squad.
27:17And that's it.
27:18And really with a bit of quality.
27:20I think I said to you before.
27:22You know.
27:23Improving with quality.
27:24You know.
27:25Quality costs.
27:26We're trying to.
27:27We're trying to do our best at this minute.
27:29To get the players in.
27:30Lots more to come later in the week.
27:33Rangers are in the northeastern Polish city of Białystok in the first leg of their Europa League third qualifying round
27:39tie.
27:40Sports Sound has full coverage of that on BBC Radio Scotland with kickoff at five.
27:44As well as Hart's tricky trip to Portugal to face Benfica.
27:48There will also be updates from Motherwell and Tabernian's ties in the Conference League qualifiers.
27:54Then on Friday BBC Scotland's first live championship game of the season.
27:59As Partick Thistle hosts Livingston.
28:00That's from 7.25 on the BBC Scotland channel.
28:05And remember you can get the Scottish Football Podcast every day at BBC Sounds or wherever you download your podcasts.
28:13And if that wasn't enough, you can watch the Craig Gordon episode of Icons on BBC3 and on the iPlayer
28:20following this programme.
28:22The opening weekend of the 2026-27 Scottish Premiership season has come and gone.
28:29Plenty stories as usual.
28:30Good night.
28:41Good night.
28:43Good night.
28:45Good night.
28:49Good night.
28:57Good night.
28:59Good night.
