00:27Now let me tell you the thing nobody selling you a $40 can of foam wants you to understand.
00:33The wasp you see flying around your porch is not your problem.
00:37That one wasp does not matter.
00:40Kill it and 10 more come tomorrow.
00:43Your problem is the nest you cannot see, and the queen inside it laying eggs all summer
00:48long.
00:49Spraying the air is like dipping water out of a leaking boat with a teaspoon.
00:53You can do it all day and the boat still sinks.
00:57What you have to do, the only thing that ever truly works, is reach the nest itself, and
01:03the wasps are going to do that part for you.
01:05You just have to know how to send them.
01:08My mother taught me this, and her mother taught her, back when a tin of powder cost pennies,
01:13and there was no store down the road selling you a different bottle for every bug that crawled.
01:18The old women in our district did not have an aisle full of sprays.
01:22They had a few cheap things they understood well, and they used them with scents.
01:27That is what I am handing you today.

01:51But you do not need to buy a thing to use what I am about to tell you.
01:55So let me show you.
01:57The first thing, and this is the one that does the real work, costs you almost nothing and
02:02starts in the dollar store.
02:03You buy a small bottle of plain apple juice.
02:06Then you go to the hardware store, over by the pest things, and you buy a container of
02:11pure boric acid.
02:12Plain boric acid, the fine white powder, nothing else mixed in.
02:16Not the roach powder with all the extra things added, just the pure powder.
02:21It runs about $6, and that one container will last you years and years.
02:25Here is what you do with it.
02:27Take any large container.
02:29An old bucket is fine.
02:30Pour in about two cups of the apple juice.
02:33Add two teaspoons of the boric acid powder.
02:36Stir it until that powder is gone completely, dissolved right into the juice.
02:41That is the whole thing.
02:42That is your bait.
02:44Now here is why it works, and why it works on the wasps, but leaves the honey bees alone,
02:49which matters to me a great deal because we keep bees, and the Lord gave us those bees
02:53to pollinate the whole garden.
02:55A yellow jacket and a wasp are scavengers.
02:57They are looking for sugar, and they are looking for meat.
03:00And that apple juice hits both of those wants hard.
03:04They cannot pass it by.
03:05But a honey bee does not forage that way.
03:08A honey bee goes to flowers, and she tells the other bees exactly where the flowers are.
03:12A bucket of apple juice sitting on the ground means nothing to her.
03:15She flies right past it.
03:17So this bait calls the wasps and lets your bees be.
03:21That is not something I read in a book.
03:23That is just how the Lord made the two different, and the old women knew the difference and used
03:27it.
03:28Now, the boric acid.
03:30It is a slow poison to an insect, and slow is exactly what you want.
03:34The wasp lands, she drinks, and she does not fall over dead on the spot.
03:38She lives long enough to fly home and share that food with the queen and the young in
03:43the nest.
03:44That is the whole secret.
03:45She carries your bait into the one place you could never reach yourself, and she feeds it
03:50to the very wasps that are making all the others.
03:53Within a few days, the whole nest is gone.
03:57Quiet from the inside, without you ever climbing a ladder.
04:01To set it out, you do not use the bucket.
04:04You pour just a little of the mixture into the bottom of an old soda can.
04:09Just a little.
04:11You do not want it deep enough that the wasps drown in it, because a drowned wasp cannot carry
04:16anything home, and then the nest lives.
04:20You want barely enough at the bottom for them to reach.
04:23Then break a little stick and set it into the can so one end pokes up out of the top
04:29like
04:30a ramp.
04:31The wasp climbs down the stick, drinks, climbs back out, and flies home.
04:38Set these cans around the edges of your property, up under the eaves, near where you see them
04:43coming and going, anywhere your dog or your little ones cannot get at them and knock them
04:49over.
04:50And let me be honest with you the way my mother was honest with me, because telling you the
04:55truth is how you know you can trust the rest.
04:59That boric acid will not hurt a grown person or a dog at the amount in this bait.
05:05A child would have to sit and eat spoonfuls of the raw powder straight to come to any harm.
05:12But you keep the powder container up high and out of reach anyway, the same as you would
05:17keep any such thing from a child, because there is no sense being careless.
05:22Set the bait where the wasps can find it and the children cannot.
05:27That is just good keeping.
05:29Now the bait handles the nest you cannot see.
05:32But you may already have a nest you can see, up under the porch roof, in the corner of
05:38a shed, and the bait will not be fast enough for one of those.
05:42For that, I want you to do something so simple you will not believe it until you watch it happen.
05:48You take a spray bottle.
05:50You fill it with water, and you put in a good squirt of plain dish soap.
05:55That dish soap.
05:57Shake it up.
05:58That is your wasp killer, and it costs you nothing because it is already by your sink.
06:04Here is why a thing so plain works.
06:07A wasp does not breathe through her mouth the way you and I do.
06:11She breathes through little holes along the sides of her body, and her whole shell is covered
06:17in a thin, waxy coat that keeps the water out.
06:20The soap cuts right through that wax coat.
06:23Once the wax is broken, the water pours straight in through those breathing holes, and she drowns
06:30from the inside.
06:31There is no chemistry to be afraid of, no poison cloud drifting over your garden.
06:37It is just soap and water doing what soap and water do.
06:41You spray the nest straight on, and you keep spraying.
06:45Do not stop after one squirt.
06:47Within a few seconds, the wasps drop right off.
06:50But here is the one rule you must never break, and I mean never.
06:55Do not spray water at a nest that is up against a light, a switch, a wired box, anything at
07:02all with electricity in it.
07:04Water and electricity together will hurt you, or worse.
07:07And every year, somebody ends up in the hospital because they stood on a ladder spraying water
07:13straight at a nest built around a porch light.
07:17If the nest is anywhere near a wire or a fixture, you leave the soap bottle in the kitchen, and
07:23you do this next part instead.
07:25For a nest near electricity, you go and you buy a proper wasp spray made for exactly that,
07:31the kind that does not carry electricity, that exterminators keep on the truck for nests by
07:37the breaker box and the outdoor lights.
07:39It costs around $15 and one can last you several seasons.
07:44You stand back a good ways, 10 or 15 feet, you aim, and the wasps drop almost the moment
07:51it touches them.
07:52It is faster than the soap, and it takes the danger of the wire clean out of it.
07:56There is no shame in buying the right tool for the dangerous job.
08:01My grandmother would have told you the same.
08:04You do not risk your life to save $15.
08:07But here is the part nearly everybody skips, and it is the whole reason the wasps come back
08:13to the same corner of your house every single summer.
08:16You have to treat the spot where they build.
08:18A wasp comes back to the same eve year after year because the old nest leaves a smell behind
08:26in the wood, a marking the wasps make while they build, and it soaks into the wood and
08:32the cracks, and it stays there long after the nest itself is knocked down and gone.
08:39So next spring, a new queen comes along.
08:42She catches that old scent, and she reads it the way you would read a sign that says,
08:47good safe spot, build here.
08:50And she builds in the very same place.
08:53That is why you keep having the same trouble in the same corner.
08:58It is not bad luck.
09:00It is that smell still sitting in the wood.
09:03The fix is a waterproof dust made to kill insects.
09:07And you put it up under the eaves, on the rafters, around the light fixtures, in the cracks
09:13and corners where they like to build.
09:16You use a little duster to puff it back into the tight spots.
09:20It holds up out there for months, right through the rain and the snow.
09:25Any wasp that lands on a dusted spot picks it up on her legs and carries it home.
09:31And it works the same slow way the bait does, back to the nest, into the colony.
09:37You dust your eaves once in the spring, and you will not see a new nest go up all season.
09:45So let me lay the whole thing out for you plain, the way I would tell my own daughter.
09:51The boric acid and apple juice in the cans, set around your property, to quietly kill the
09:57nests you cannot see.
09:59The dish soap and water in a spray bottle, for a nest you can reach that is not near any
10:05wire.
10:06The proper wasp spray for any nest up against electricity, where water would be dangerous.
10:13And the dust up under your eaves, so next spring's queen never settles there in the first place.
10:20The bait reaches what you cannot.
10:23The soap handles what you can.
10:25The spray takes care of the dangerous spots.
10:28And the dust makes sure none of them ever come home again.
10:34Now here is the part I want you to sit with.
10:37A man with a truck will charge you between $100 and $300 to come out and do one or two
10:44of
10:44these very things.
10:46One visit.
10:47And he is using the same boric acid, the same dust, the same idea of letting the wasp carry
10:54it home, that my mother used out of a tin that cost her pennies.
10:59Everything I just showed you, all four pieces of it, comes to under $30 in supplies.
11:06And most of that $30 lasts you for years.
11:10And I do not say that because the man with the truck is a wicked man.
11:15He is making a living and there is no sin in that.
11:18It is worse than that in a way.
11:21It is not one person plotting against you.
11:24It is a whole system where every part of it does better when you believe this is too
11:30hard and too dangerous to do yourself.
11:34The store sells you a fresh $40 can every summer.
11:39The service sells you the visit.
11:41And nobody anywhere has to sit down and plan it because everybody profits from the same
11:47forgetting.
11:48The knowing how just quietly slips out of families, one generation to the next, until
11:55a woman is afraid of her own front porch and reaching for the telephone.
12:00That is the real thing I am trying to put back into your hands.
12:04So here is what I would ask of you.
12:08Go out and look at your house this week.
12:10Walk the whole way around it slow and look up under every eve in the corners of the porch
12:17around the shed.
12:19Find where they are building.
12:21Then set out one can of that bait and tell me what happens.
12:27Come down to the comments and tell me your county and how old your house is.
