00:13The red light is on inside a C-130 moving at 130 knots, about a quarter mile above the ground.
00:2064 paratroopers are crammed shoulder to shoulder, each carrying over a hundred pounds of weapons,
00:25ammunition, and equipment strapped to their bodies. Some of them are shaking, some look half asleep,
00:31and in about 90 seconds, every single one of them is going to throw themselves out the door.
00:36This is what an airborne operation actually looks like, and the jump is just the beginning,
00:41because once they hit the ground, these soldiers are expected to assemble, arm up, and start fighting
00:47within minutes. To understand how that's even possible, you need to understand what happens
00:52inside that aircraft in the final moments before the green light.
01:12It starts with a sequence of commands that every paratrooper has drilled hundreds of times.
01:17The jump master shouts, stand up, and the cabin erupts as 60 plus soldiers echo it back. Then, hook up,
01:25and each one clips their static line to a steel cable running the length of the aircraft. That
01:31static line is everything. It's a 15 to 20 foot cord that connects the parachute pack on their back to
01:38the plane itself. When they jump, their body weight pulls the line taut, rips the parachute out of its
01:44container, and deploys the canopy automatically. There is no pulling a rip cord. The system does
01:50it for you, which is a good thing, because at 1250 feet above the ground, you have roughly four seconds
01:57before that canopy needs to be open and working.
02:14After hooking up, they check their own equipment and the equipment of the person in front of them.
02:19Then comes the call, sound off for equipment check. Starting from the front of the line, each soldier
02:24taps the person ahead of them and shouts, OK. The signal ripples down until the last person in line
02:30locks eyes with the jump master, holds up a knife hand, and calls, OK, jump master. It looks choreographed,
02:37and in a way it is, but every piece of that ritual exists because something went wrong once,
02:42and somebody got hurt or killed. Then the door opens. Wind fills the cabin. The jump master leans out,
03:02scanning the drop zone below, checking for other aircraft, confirming they're over the right target.
03:07A red light glows above the door. At 30 seconds out, it switches to amber. The first jumper turns to
03:14face the open sky, and then it goes green. The jump master slaps the first jumper on the back and
03:19shouts, GO! From there, the line moves fast. Soldiers shuffle to the door, hand off their static line to
03:26a safety, make eye contact, and step into nothing. One after another, alternating sides of the aircraft,
03:32they file out at roughly one second intervals. In a well-drilled unit, an entire stick of 64
03:39paratroopers can be out of the plane in under a minute, and then they're falling. But not the
03:44way you'd think. There's no stomach-dropping roller coaster sensation.
04:04Paratroopers exit into a 130-knot blast of air, so it feels less like falling, and more like getting shoved
04:11sideways. Within three to six seconds, the static line does its job, and the canopy inflates above
04:17them. Under the current T-11 parachute system, a fully loaded soldier descends at about 19 feet
04:23per second. That's slower than the older T-10, which brought you down at closer to 24 feet per second,
04:29but it's still fast. For context, 19 feet per second means you're hitting the ground at roughly the same
04:35speed as if you jumped off a nine-foot wall, except you're also carrying a rucksack, a rifle, ammunition,
04:42water, radios, and sometimes anti-tank weapons strapped to your legs and torso.
04:59That landing is where a lot of injuries happen. Paratroopers are trained in something called the PLF,
05:05the Parachute Landing Fall. The idea is to distribute the impact across five points of contact. Balls of your feet
05:12first, then calves, then thighs, then buttocks, then the muscles along your upper back. Done right, your
05:18body rolls like a rocking chair and absorbs the shock across the entire side of your body instead
05:24of slamming straight into your knees or spine. Done wrong, or in bad conditions like high winds or rough
05:30terrain, you can break ankles, compress vertebrae, or get dragged across the ground by your canopy
05:36before you can release it. But the landing isn't the mission, the mission is what comes after,
05:41and this is where airborne operations get interesting, because once a paratrooper hits the ground,

06:13The first thing they do is release one side of their canopy to keep from getting dragged,
06:18then they drop prone, unclip their harness, and get their weapon ready. In a combat scenario,
06:23you don't stand up and look around. You stay low, scan for threats, and start moving toward the
06:29assembly area. The whole time, other paratroopers are landing around you, some close, some scattered
06:36hundreds of meters away, depending on wind and aircraft formation. In the airborne community,
06:41they have a term for what happens next.

07:14Because no matter how well you plant a drop, soldiers end up spread across the drop zone.
07:19So the doctrine is simple. Find the nearest friendly soldiers,
07:23form a group, figure out where your unit is assembling, and move to it.
07:27In good conditions, that assembly can happen in minutes.
07:40On the night of D-Day in 1944, with paratroopers scattered miles from their intended drop zones,
07:47it took hours. Small groups found each other in the darkness and moved toward the sound of gunfire.
07:53That same principle holds today. The 82nd Airborne Division is built around this idea.
08:00Their stated mission is to deploy anywhere in the world within 18 hours of notification,
08:05conduct a parachute assault, and secure objectives for follow-on forces.
08:10They're essentially the door kickers. They go in first, seize an airfield or a key piece of terrain,
08:15hold it long enough for heavier forces to arrive by plane, and then hand it off.
08:32The whole thing depends on paratroopers being able to go from sitting in an aircraft to fighting on
08:38the ground in the shortest possible time. The last large-scale US combat jump happened in March 2003,
08:44when about 1,000 paratroopers from the 173rd Airborne Brigade jumped into northern Iraq as part of
08:52Operation Northern Delay. The C-17 transports dove from 30,000 feet to roughly 600 feet above the drop
09:01zone. The soldiers landed in knee-deep mud, each carrying about 120 pounds of gear. Their mission
09:08was to open a second front and tie down Iraqi forces in the north.
09:24Two battalions of light infantry going up against an entire mechanized division, and they did it.
09:31That kind of capability doesn't come from some secret technology or special equipment. It comes from
09:36drilling the same jump commands, the same static line hookup, the same PLF, the same assembly procedures,
09:43over and over again until every piece of it becomes automatic. Because when you're falling out of a
09:49plane in the dark over hostile territory, there's no time to think about what comes next. You either
09:55trained for it, or you didn't. There's an old saying in the airborne community, when it no longer scares
10:00you, you have to quit. Fear is what makes you pay attention. And when the green light comes on at
10:061,250 feet,
