Did you feel that? A powerful magnitude 5 earthquake with its epicenter in Cartago shook Costa Rica tonight, leaving residents in the Central Valley and beyond on edge.
The temblor, originating just 4 kilometers southeast of Orosi and at a shallow depth of 8 kilometers, was caused by a fault system in southern Cartago. This proximity to the surface allowed the seismic activity to be widely felt, even reaching as far as Miramar de Puntarenas.
Emergency services responded to initial reports of disruptions, including a notable incident where a man was injured by falling glass in Cot de Oreamuno. The Costa Rican Red Cross provided medical assistance, transferring him to the Max Peralta Hospital.
Widespread power outages were also reported across several areas in Cartago, affecting communities such as Oreamuno, Cervantes, Pacayas, Capelladas, and Birricito. Municipalities are actively assessing the damage and working to restore electrical service.
