00:20Is the world's most important oil route becoming the next major battlefield?
00:25Iran has said it has struck and stopped two oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, an incident
00:31that could further escalate tensions across the Gulf.
00:34According to a statement released by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or IRGC,
00:40the incident took place in the early hours of July 31.
00:44The IRGC said the two tankers attempted to transit the Strait of Hormuz using what it
00:49described as an unannounced and unsafe route while under U.S. military air escort.
00:55Iran alleges the vessels ignored repeated warnings before they were targeted and forced to stop.
01:01The statement also claimed that four other oil tankers changed course and returned to their
01:07previous locations after the incident.
01:09Iranian state-linked media later released footage that it says shows one of the tankers on fire.
01:15The IRGC accused the United States Central Command, or CENTCOM, of directing the ships through
01:22the route and warned commercial vessels and shipping companies against following U.S. military
01:27guidance in the Strait.
01:29However, Iran has not identified the tankers by name, flag, ownership, or cargo, and no precise
01:36location of the reported strike has been released.
01:39So far, there has been no independent confirmation of Iran's account.
01:43Maritime monitoring agencies, shipping companies, and Western officials have not verified the
01:49reported attack.
01:50U.S. Central Command has also not publicly commented on the specific incident.
01:55The latest announcement comes amid months of heightened tensions in the Strait, one of
02:00the world's most important oil shipping routes.
02:03Since the conflict intensified earlier this year, Iran has repeatedly said that vessels passing
02:09through the Strait must comply with its directives, while the United States has maintained that
02:14international shipping has the right to navigate freely through the waterway.
02:19Both sides have exchanged accusations over attacks on commercial shipping, military operations,
02:25and regional security.
02:27If independently confirmed, the reported targeting of the two tankers could further raise concerns
02:32over global energy supplies, maritime security, and the risk of a wider confrontation in the Gulf.
02:39For now, the incident is based on official statements from Iran, while independent verification
02:45of the reported strike, the vessels involved, and the extent of any damage remains pending.
