Voter registration opens as Haiti eyes december polls

Haiti has launched voter registration ahead of December's elections, the country's first in a decade. Ten registration centres have opened across generally secure areas of Port au Prince, as hopeful voters begin signing up in a key step toward restoring democratic rule.

00:20The Electoral Council will continue to open registration centres across the country
00:25so that the public can register for the first step, the second step being to go and vote.
00:33Haiti hasn't held a general election in more than a decade and has been without a president since
00:39Jovenel Moïse was assassinated in 2021. Since then, gang violence has spiralled with armed groups
00:46controlling an estimated 70% of Port-au-Prince. The country's unelected prime minister is under
00:52growing pressure to deliver elections, although the planned December 13th vote
00:57still depends on security conditions improving.
01:05It's up to them to do their job because they have all the necessary means at their disposal.
01:10The prime minister, the interior minister, Mario Andressol,
01:16and police chief Vladimir Parison to establish security so that everyone can go to the polls
01:23and choose a candidate.
01:32The violence remains relentless. UN figures show more than 5,900 people were killed last year,
01:38with another 1,600 deaths reported in just the first three months of this year.
