00:00Algeria's ruling National Liberation Front has emerged as the largest party in parliament
00:05after legislative elections marked by record low voter turnout.
00:10Official results released on Monday showed that just 21 percent of the country's 25 million
00:16registered voters cast their ballots in the July 2nd election, the lowest participation since
00:23independence. The FLN secured 90 of the 407 parliamentary seats despite widespread public
00:31apathy and controversy over disqualification of nearly a third of prospective candidates.
00:38Election Authority Chief Karim Khelfan defended the voters transparent,
00:42saying low turnout was not unique to Algeria. The election comes years after Iraq protest movement
00:49which forced the resignation of long-time President Abdelaziz Butel Fika in 2019.
00:56President Abdelmajid Tebbun, re-elected in 2024, remains in office as political participation continues to decline.
