MarketWatch provides a comprehensive overview of the S&P 500 Index, covering the latest stock market news, trading data, and market movement analysis, with stocks categorized by sector and industry to help investors understand performance trends and market capitalization strength.
Transcript
00:00The S&P 500 ended higher on Tuesday, July 28, as gains in Boeing and Coca-Cola helped offset tumbling
00:06cheap stocks ahead of quarterly reports from Apple and other tech companies this week.
00:11Global markets have been volatile this month as investors worry that Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon and other technology heavyweights may be
00:19overspending on AI data centers as they raise to dominate the emerging technology.
00:24Now let's take a look at the US market heat map which provides a visual snapshot of the S&P
00:29500 as we can see right now, stocks across different sectors and also industries.
00:34So on this map, the size of each box represents company's market capitalization, meaning the larger the box, the bigger
00:40the company and green means gains and trading higher, whereas red means losses and trading lower.
00:45So I'm going to start with Apple first. Apple shows a green color over here, so it's increased by 0
00:51.94% and now standing at the level of 340.08.
00:56And the latest update on Apple is Apple's market capitalization briefly surpassed $5 trillion for the first time on Tuesday,
01:04making it only the second company ever to achieve that milestone after NVIDIA.
01:08And its shares were last up 0.72% at $339.33, giving it a market capitalization of $4.98
01:17trillion.
01:18So Apple became the most valuable company in the world earlier this month, overtaking Cheapmaker NVIDIA, which had been at
01:25the top since June 2025 and was the first company ever to breach the $5 trillion threshold.
01:31So Apple has benefited from strong demand for its products as well, as its decision to skip the ongoing AI
01:37spending race among big tech rivals that is sapping their cash flows and settling them with humongous debt.
01:43So that's the latest update on Apple.
01:45Moving on to Google, it shows a green color as well, so increased by 2.19% and now standing
01:52at $333.71.
01:54And Google, a decades-long crackdown on Google's business practices in Europe, is entering a costly new phase as the
02:01loss of the first case brought against its under-new EU legislation opens the new door to a wave of
02:07private lawsuits demanding up to $10 billion in damages.
02:10So having already absorbed billions of dollars in EU fines since 2017, Alphabet's surge giant is now facing lawsuits from
02:18smaller rivals across Europe, according to half a dozen lawyers and litigation financiers, and a tally of cases filed in
02:26half a dozen countries.
02:27So that has been precipitated by a $1 billion fine, the first under Digital Markets Act imposed on the company
02:33for favoring its own services and preventing app developers from steering users to cheaper options outside its app store, Google
02:41Play.
02:42And moving on to Amazon.
02:44Amazon, on the other hand, decreased by 0.2% and now standing at $230.86, and that's under Internet
02:52Silicle.
02:52So the latest update on Amazon, Amazon.com is revamping its AI strategy, winding down many in-house AI models
03:01and sharpening focus on a new frontier model effort, Business Insider reported on Tuesday.
03:07So the company has begun deprecating most of its flagship Nova AI models, including the high-end, premier and omni
03:14models, real video generation model, and canvas image generation model, the report said.
03:19So instead, Amazon is increasingly moving resources toward a frontier model development, led by researcher Peter Abel, with frontier research
03:28becoming a top priority this year at the company.
