00:00hi this is a pre-recorded presentation entitled introducing linked open data living informational
00:06books i'm mark bilby this is under the digital humanities section in the society of biblical
00:14literature for the annual meeting while the presentation was accepted the session is
00:20happening in person and so i can't be there for that in san antonio and that's why i'm recording
00:25this ahead of time i'm also uploading to zenodo an open access archive not only the recording but
00:33also this outline so that people can follow along and have persistent reliable access to this so i'd
00:41like to start out by describing a little bit of my own journey in terms of my education and vocation
00:47and what led me to try to do something new in this space so at the intersection of monopolistic and
00:54open science trends in academic publishing my first heading i started in religious studies
01:02in seminary and then a phd program at uva in judaism christianity and antiquity and uh so i work in
01:11early christianity new testament reception history a little bit rabbinic studies classics and bringing
01:18all those things together and then later is kind of a retooling of my career i got
01:22uh and masters in science and library and information science at drexel and this helped me
01:29get up to speed on trends in systems management information organizations academic publishing
01:37and for the last five years i've been working as a scholarly communications or scholarly publishing
01:44librarian at cal state fullerton so i'm something of an interdisciplinary scholar working in humanities
01:53trying to bring up new competencies in data science and information science working as an advocate for
02:01open access practices open science open data and staying up with trends in scholarly publishing
02:07one of the big concerns that i and many others have working in academic publishing space is the
02:14economics of extraction there's a massive monopolization going on in academic publishing not only are big
02:22publishers buying up other publishers but they're also buying up the whole supply chain of knowledge
02:28production and access so big companies such as proquest or elsevier they're not just acquiring journals or
02:37ebooks or these sorts of things they're acquiring whole platforms that are about the archiving and distribution
02:45of uh information uh at concurrently and as very much part of that monopolization there's a massive
02:52trend toward inflation and our students are the ones who feel this most acutely textbook monograph and
03:00journal inflation rates are exorbitant going from anywhere from five percent up to 40 or 50 percent a year
03:08covet has not made that better there were band-aids uh in terms of online access made available but the
03:17trend toward price gouging has only continued book rentals in online spaces just are just the latest
03:23iteration of this in a lot of ways ebook licensing is itself a lease mode and bypasses all the rights
03:33that
03:34libraries and and purchasers would get from actually buying a print version of a book and retaining
03:43for sale rights to to sell that book so books are becoming more and more of an online service
03:50uh publishers are trying to make money as many ways as they can it's not uncommon for instance
03:57uh for me as a scholarly communication librarian to see a big publisher charge you know a university
04:04hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars at the same time charge authors article processing charges or
04:11book processing charges and at the same time charge end users to access articles even if they've already
04:19been paid for by the university um so multi-channel price gouging is the economic model for a lot of
04:28the
04:28big publishers and at the same time they are harvesting and selling user data so there are all kinds of
04:37issues around the ethics of publishing these days as a countervailing movement we have the open access
04:43movement and i've provided links here to a bunch of different resources so you can do something of an
04:49environmental scan in the open access movement there have been several important statements including
04:56the budapest declaration berlin declaration and others there are these days thousands of mandates and
05:03policies some of the bigger ones you may be aware of are harvard's open access policy or the university
05:10of california open access policy many r1s have these in the united states but also big government
05:17and non-government funders often have these open access policies the state of california has an open
05:23access policy for any state grant funded research gates foundation nsf nih a lot of the big funders
05:31especially in the heart sciences tend to mandate open access not only for publications coming out of
05:37their grant funded research but also the underlying data this is not filtered as much into the social
05:44sciences and even less into the humanities and so there's some room for us to catch up and
05:51and innovate in this space maybe in ways that our colleagues in the heart sciences might not at first think
05:57about
05:58there are aspirational goals and coordinated initiatives for institutions to shift their budgets
06:05to supporting open access and to have open access standards so all nations for instance in europe germany
06:13and sweden have been very aggressive in insisting that any of their employees in academia
06:21have open access protections for their publications there are major new sites around this there are major
06:28transformative agreements that's where as as part of the deal for a university or consortium to access a
06:37publisher's publications it comes built in with all the authors of that institution having all of any and all
06:46publication costs subsidized in advance so ucs for instance inked such a deal with elsevier essentially
06:54flipping 10 percent of elsevier's journal content to open access uh in a snap uh open access repositories
07:03are common both open science uh such as zanodo which is funded by cern in the in the eu and
07:12uh but also
07:12institutional repositories for universities there are more and more open access funds
07:19sponsored by grant funders but also by universities we have open access publishing platforms these are
07:25open source systems several of the more common ones are under a group called pkp the public knowledge
07:35project these include open journal systems open monograph press and open conference systems so these are
07:42all about uh sort of democratizing publishing uh to provide uh high quality top end uh publishing
07:52experiences um for journals um that aren't under the umbrella of uh one of the big publishers and some
08:00universities do and university consortia do a phenomenal job in this space university of alberta and
08:06canada for instance is publishing dozens of journals through ojs there are major open access publishers
08:13fully committed to open access principles these include ubiquity press which was founded by a former
08:20executive at elsevier and uh and nature science which has i think hundreds of journals openstax is one of
08:29the better known for open textbook production the open textbook library and associated with that is the open
08:37educational network uh have hundreds of books that are open access and there are hundreds of publishers
08:44that have open access imprints as well there's also a trend toward unlatching or ungluing or you might say
08:52flipping books from closed access to open access we're flipping them from print only to an open digital
09:01format so to the big players in this space are knowledge unlatched and they tend to ink high level deals
09:08for dozens or hundreds of publications backlisted as well as frontlisted and then unglu it which does one
09:16at a time uh crowdfunding as a way of flipping books to open access i just recently did that for
09:22a monograph
09:23i had published uh with the university of strasburg in 2013 distributed through rebels and it was a successful
09:30campaign raised over three thousand dollars and effectively flipped my monograph to open access
09:36and then there are open access finders and plugins uh open access button and on paywall are two of the
09:42better known ones these are tools that allow you to find if any articles are available for free
09:49um in in a green version or a gold version green being the author's accepted version gold being the published
09:57version
09:58if either one or both are available openly anywhere in the web these tools help you find that and you
10:04can install
10:05them as plugins in your browser so there's a lot going on in the open space um again the big
10:11grant funders
10:12and governments government agencies are very much behind getting their dollars uh getting the value of
10:21tax dollars and their investments back for the public good while you have these publisher monopolies
10:28trying to soak up as much money as they can from from academic authors and institutions
10:35at the same time there's a movement toward link linked open data uh tim berners lee gave a very well
10:42-known
10:43presentation a ted talk in 2013 about this and talked about how we need to start uploading raw data and
10:49then
10:49connecting all data and over the last seven eight years we've seen a massive uh shift toward creating
10:57permanent ids for all kinds of knowledge products uh and all kinds of other things that we might not even
11:04consider knowledge products so dois are probably one of the best known ones a digital object identifier
11:09these are used these days not just for journal articles but also encyclopedia articles book chapters
11:19uh but even beyond that for grants and even pieces of equipment in a lab all of these can have
11:26dois so
11:27that there's a reliable way to identify something in a global interoperable system arcs are very similar
11:34they tend to be used for massive uh data sets where there are just lots of items that need to
11:39be uniquely
11:40identified arc stands for archival resource key it works just like a doi the the the information
11:49architecture underlying both dois and arcs is called handles and some institutions just use handles on
11:55their own essentially these are permanent urls but a consortial or national international commitment to
12:02link resolution to find those items many of you are probably familiar with isbn's for books but you
12:08might not know about isssns for serial publications magazines journals as unique identifiers and you
12:16may not know about ISNI uh international standard name identifier so probably most of you listening to
12:21this presentation if you've published a book and it's been distributed in europe you probably have an
12:27ISNI it's a 16 digit purely numeric identifier for you as an author that lets international agencies and
12:36libraries and other information organizations reliably identify and collect the publications of a given
12:43author more and more people are familiar these days in signing up with orcid orcid is a subset of
12:48ISNI and it's interoperable with ISNI the architecture is exactly the same 16 digits purely numeric it's being
12:56required by dozens of publishers these days so that there's unambiguous identification of authors even
13:04when names can be represented in different ways or names can change over time and orcid allows for
13:11massive interoperability with all kinds of other systems and automatic data exchanges between them so
13:17you don't have to type in the same information in a bunch of different systems uh fair data principles
13:21is a very important trend as well making data findable accessible interoperable and reusable
13:30so that's again more in the hard sciences but it is becoming more and more part of digital humanities
13:35today data management plans are also important again this tends to be more in the hard sciences
13:41and it tends to be more of a requirement for big grant funding but again it's filtering into the
13:48humanities through the digital humanities and it just basically involves having a plan for how you're
13:54going to collect data how you're going to format it how you're going to preserve it how you're going
14:00to protect the privacy of persons or sensitive information as part of that um you know how how
14:08will this be integrated and shared as part of your research or part of your publishing where will it be
14:15stored all of these kinds of things version control is part of this as well and linked open data you
14:21can
14:21have you know a publication or a data set and then you might have an update to it or open
14:26source software
14:27and you know this is very important for software development that you clearly label each version and keep
14:33track of how things are changed how software is forked and merged back into the the main development stream
14:41so that's becoming more and more part of publishing practices as well there's a lot of gray literature
14:46in academia and it's important to keep and data now it's important to keep track of all the versions
14:53rdf is now the standard for library cataloging in terms of and web development a lot in the information
15:00science space connecting data to other data through meaningful relationships through rdf triples
15:08there are more and more public ontologies being developed this can be you know art and historical
15:14institutions like the getty but it can also be governmental organizations or major publishers or major
15:20database vendors that develop their own ontologies better than shared more and more digital humanities
15:27projects are crowdsourced and interdependent so they're not reinventing the wheel but using each
15:33other's data we have data set finding tools google has a data set finder website now where they will
15:41you know index and then make accessible all kinds of data sets as data sets basically the whole linked
15:48open data movement envisions the world is a massive interoperable database of data sets and portals
15:54okay and then as part of all this we have massive experiments happening in academic publishing
16:00archiving and cataloging most of us are probably used to blogs and websites from the last 30 years
16:07social media has obviously ramped up a lot in the last 15 but gray literature and academia is becoming
16:13more and more common of archiving all kinds of scholarly knowledge products you know over the last 10 years
16:20digital humanities is obviously very important and then we have platforms such as scalar or omeka
16:26storyline that allow for meaningful and immersive and interactive presentations of data we also have
16:36book experiments going on brown university for instance through uva has this really rich immersive book
16:44that they released about a year ago that's sort of art history but it's rich and interactive and then
16:49obviously textbook vendors are doing similar things trying to build whole course experiences into books
16:56okay so in the midst of all of this i proposed something of a new format for academic publishing
17:02and author work i called a rod lib linked open data living informational book and when i was encapsulating
17:11this and thinking about how to prototype this and pioneer this what came to me is that it needs to
17:17be in a codex format
17:19so it needs to look like a book and and read like a book with pages with specific page numbers
17:26preferably
17:27in a pdf format preferably in an archival pdf format though rtf or docx could be acceptable it needs to
17:35be both
17:36human and machine readable so you know i don't want people having to click around in a bunch of different
17:42places it needs to look and feel like a book that you can move through quickly page through quickly uh
17:48read through as as you would any other book um i see a lot lib as an academic book um
17:55but something
17:56that evolves like software so you know we use software platforms every day apps on our phone that software
18:04is constantly being updated right daily weekly monthly major updates are being released for that software
18:11where often we don't notice them or when we do they're advertised as feature enhancements so what
18:19i'm envisioning here with an academic book is similar evolutions right where every week or every month or
18:26quarterly or annually you can set your own schedule but significant new features um or content are rolled out
18:36within the book and uh it's something that's completely under the control of the author right so
18:42where you know wordpress has all kinds of great functions twitter is wonderful for getting information
18:50out quickly and virally uh there's pretty minimal control you know you have pretty minimal control over
18:57something like facebook or tick you know twitter or tick tock um you have to kind of fit yourself into
19:03you have to kind of fit yourself into their molds um in terms of your productions your how you format
19:09and
19:10share the the knowledge um that you have wordpress obviously is going to allow for quite a bit more
19:15freedom but it's still quite restrictive and you know again thinking in terms of the codex as something
19:21that's quite flexible right books can come in all kinds of sizes and shapes right and yet it's still a
19:29book
19:30but something that the author completely controls from top to bottom how it looks and how it feels and how
19:37it reads
19:39so and i see it as more of a democratic thing where both the author is empowered to not have
19:45to fit into
19:47uh previous molds of what a book is supposed to be but also readers have freedom to navigate the book
19:54as
19:54they wish right so instead of a an attention extraction economy it's more of a meditation immersion
20:04experience where people can spend as much or as little time in your book as they want to
20:10lodlibs are cc license that is creative commons license openly archived and globally distributed
20:16they're linked and iterative so when you first upload a log lib you get a doi for it that is
20:22its
20:22root or its base doi which i like to think of as a broadcast station that that is permanent and
20:29then
20:29every time you update the log lib you get a new doi and all the dois are connected to each
20:35other and all
20:36the new dois will resolve to the original doi and all the original the original doi will resolve to the
20:42latest doi right so you have permanent identifiers for every single version and therefore you can cite
20:50any individual version and then the final thing is i thought that it was important to make this
20:55you know scientific i suppose it doesn't have to be the format it doesn't inherently have to be
21:00scientific but i i wanted to make it an open science book experiment so i started my log lib back
21:07in july of last year with five hypotheses that were scientific related to the gospels related to q and
21:15the gospel of marcian released those and then since then i've tried to prove those scientifically
21:21okay uh what are the advantages of log libs for me book writing has become a mode of research and
21:27discovery and not merely an after product i feel like every time i go to write more content in the
21:34book
21:35or edit content i'm learning and i'm always learning and i feel like that's my default posture anyways as
21:41an academic person i love learning constantly learning there's so much to learn uh so i feel like i i've
21:49turned my book writing process into a learning process for me it's very educational sort of active
21:54learning pedagogy applied to the professor i'm staking a historical claim to novel hypotheses right when i came
22:00up with my five hypotheses i archived them i sent out emails about them and then i released my first
22:06set
22:06of proofs about six or seven days later uh so those digital files are date time stamped uploads in caches
22:16so they're permanently and persistently secured as long as we have a global digital infrastructure
22:22and they're basically poach proof that is if somebody else tried to copy my hypotheses i have a digital
22:28record at a moment in time uh showing that i was the one who came up with these hypotheses first
22:33and
22:34the first one to prove them um so you know if we have real original scientific contributions to make
22:40this is a cool format to use at the same time i emailed about a hundred of the top new
22:45testament
22:46scholars in the world to let them know about my hypotheses so i you know use archiving means but also
22:51you know kind of traditional email means um as i said before for me the lot lib is a opportunity
22:58to
22:58continue to build out proofs of those hypotheses it's also a way to build an audience in a market right
23:04we think about you know youtube performers tick tock performers that build up their audience and go viral
23:10and yet comparatively academic authors get very little attention uh and very little loyalty or devotion
23:20uh within the global you know information landscape um you know wikipedia gets a ton of hits but how
23:27many of our blogs if we're writing blogs get similar amounts of hits so you know the way i saw
23:33this was
23:34make a book so you know important and meaningful and cool that it starts to drive audience and loyalty so
23:44that's i build that into my regular updates when i update a new version of the book um i basically
23:51make
23:51prior versions restricted access so people can still get access to them they just have to request it but
23:58it automatically points them to the latest version so they're constantly seeing and you know i'm open
24:04i haven't been approached by advertisers yet but i imagine you know if my book had tens of thousands of
24:10views
24:11could be something where advertisers actually look to place ads in a book um again that hasn't happened
24:19yet but but we'll see what happens in the future uh it's a it's also a space for creative experimentation
24:25and layout um doing things that bring together traditional reading experiences but also invite and
24:33encourage machine learning quantitative kinds of research that our hard science colleagues or social
24:41science colleagues may be more familiar with but i also saw it as a space to do things like creative
24:46writing and even community art so i had my daughter's digital art instructor design book covers
24:53for my digital book and you know i'm open to other author artists as well contributing to the book
24:59uh i could you know i've heard some of the criticisms of lodlibs from from friends and colleagues not who
25:05are
25:05not down on me it's just they just see the uh how this is new and and strange and you
25:13know what some of
25:13the perceived problems might be so i'm just going to surface those and then respond to them so one one
25:19potential complaint is that a lot of that is not something you can cite um and i i'd say yeah
25:27you
25:27can uh in fact it the whole architecture of it is built to be citable it has a doi for
25:34every unique
25:34version and it has pagination in in the footer for every version um the fact that it can change
25:44from week to week doesn't mean that it's not citable it just means that you need to cite it at
25:49a specific
25:50moment in time right and there are different ways to cite things you know social sciences hard sciences
25:56tend to cite at the journal article level rather than the page level you could cite my log lib at
26:03at the
26:04book level if you wanted to or a subsection level but you could also cite it as a page level
26:11as long as
26:12you have that sort of granular time stamp and it's very similar to how when websites are cited or
26:18blogs are cited typically the style manuals require a last accessed date so building the date into the
26:24citation as a way is a way of doing that and i just say you know in the digital landscape
26:30citations are
26:31evolving knowledge products are evolving standards for citation are evolving so there's no reason we
26:37can't cite this in fact i've already cited my own work now in published journal articles so i haven't
26:42found citation to be a problem it's not peer reviewed as one response and i would say to that it
26:49could be
26:50there's no reason you couldn't have pre-peer review of a lot lib before you release it you can build
26:56endorsements into the book which i did with one of my colleagues but i also say peer review is after
27:02publication as well right what are book reviews except peer reviews after publication so that's
27:10more where i've seen the peer review process happening is release this welcome criticism welcome feedback
27:18and then whatever feedback i get try to respond meaningfully and make corrections and improvements
27:24based on that so instead of seeing peer review is all front loaded i see it as more uh opening
27:32up
27:32a process of continuous improvement cycles of continuous improvement so the whole world you know
27:38so sort of a fearless throwing down at the gauntlet and saying i welcome all critics bring it on
27:45that that's been my approach another criticism might be that it's too ephemeral to use right it's too
27:52a subject to change um you know it could just disappear one day potentially right if an author
27:59just decided i don't want this up anymore so yeah there is this significant factor of radical author
28:05freedom that it's not a publisher that's guaranteeing you know the ongoing availability um or content
28:15and it puts a lot of responsibility on the individual author uh to maintain it at the same time
28:21by using an open science platform such as zenodo right and there are many others harvard dataverse
28:27once you upload something to those platforms it's there basically as part of your upload agreement you're
28:34agreeing that that content is permanently archived right so very very rarely are there full-on deletions
28:44right if it's part of the open you know scientific record and academic record even if it's versioned
28:50even if you're on version 50 version 1 through 49 are all there permanently and even if they're
28:56restricted in terms of access they are still there so they could still be accessed you know if you got
29:03the the correct permissions or get the permissions to access them but this also comes in the licensing
29:09too by licensing each version with a creative commons license i'm essentially opening up the whole world
29:17to co-guarantee the permanence of the artifact with me and this goes to a principle that we in the
29:25library
29:25and information science community called lock called locks lots of copies keep stuff safe
29:31in a digital space just having a single copy is the worst thing you can do archiving something
29:38openly and allowing hundreds thousands or more people and institutions to download that content that's
29:47the best way to keep something safe the more copies that there are out there in the globe the safer
29:52something is so in some ways this is the antithesis of ephemeral this is radical permanence through
30:01radical sharing uh it's career suicide i've heard that from collins including trusted colleagues
30:06and uh i would just say it's new but you know i'm i'm trusting history uh to be the judge
30:13my future
30:14colleagues not just my present colleagues reactions have already differed for me and i welcome critical
30:20feedback and believe ultimately that persistence will pay off uh it's full of errors and i totally
30:27acknowledge that right and all of us who've written books and journal articles know that we make errors
30:32all the time incomplete information inaccurate information information we had not wish we'd not
30:38written before you know and that is part of the peer review process of fixing those errors and you know
30:45usually in the review literature we like to identify errors but also assess whether it's a acceptable
30:53number of errors is the error rate at an acceptable level for a given genre or you know field or
31:01topic
31:01and i i just say here my trust is is not in achieving perfection it's actually an embracing imperfection
31:09uh as long as we can continue to improve it and correct it so i i see this not as
31:16uh uh you know
31:18catastrophic or mortal failure of the experiment it actually is an opportunity um again to treat it
31:28as software and to engage in regular bug fixing right so uh if the core of the book is wrong
31:35that's a
31:35problem but if the core of the book is right or on the right track and you can continue to
31:42fix errors
31:44add new features and edit your own work then that can be a beneficial process both for you and for
31:51the
31:51world people can see you adapting and changing in good ways right without doing necessarily a full-on
31:58retraction of everything it's really just constant self-correction um all right and on that note
32:05that i've already gone a little bit over time so i ask indulgence from viewers but i'm gonna give
32:10you a brief book tour uh so here's a little outline of it i'll start with the title page and
32:15the table of
32:16contents uh look quickly at the bibliography uh sort of opening author bibliography as well as footer
32:23um some of the main sections of the book hypotheses methods proofs data visualization code
32:28um the space i've carved out for future book or article or chapter proposals creative writing
32:35and community art and then a live update of the upload process and uh i'll leave this open question
32:41to you you know you think that this could go viral if one or more of these online evolving digital
32:50books
32:51could go viral what might happen to our field and what might happen to the economics of publishing so i'm
32:57going to go over to the book right now for a quick book tour
33:05so this is the one i just saved today see the opening page the title page and here i have
33:14version
33:15notes about what's been updated when it was last updated you have to zoom in quite a bit to see
33:22uh this is the copyright page and i've given information about how to cite it um
33:30but excuse me
33:35but i also down here you can see in the footer i've created a page level um
33:45you know ability to cite something so pages for everything as well as a copyright notice
33:50on every single page as well as a license on every single page so that's something of a watermark
33:54almost for every page so that it identifies me but it also lets people cite at the page level
34:00um i'll go forward to other sections so some my bibliography author bio you know some of these
34:07are going to look very traditional abbreviations um i have sort of a research abstract of the whole book
34:14this kind of a visualization
34:18highlights uh here's kind of a summary of my findings in tabular format
34:25uh and as we go through you'll see you know there's some creativity here i like tables so there's
34:30there's quite a bit of quite a few tables i had a a theorem i was trying to develop here
34:36about triangulating signals
34:40and a new criteria or some old but remixed as to how to uh historically sequence strata within the gospels
34:49the core of the book are these five hypotheses
34:51um so this i released these uh back in archived these in july of 2020 and then released them
35:01publicly july 7th 2020 along with my initial proofs so here i explain my hypotheses
35:09here are proofs of the hypotheses again i'm trying to take a very overtly scientific approach to this
35:16here i use binomial distribution to try to separate out void the voice of the redactor luke
35:23from the gospel of marcian um and then reconstructions and you'll see here right now we're in two page view
35:30but right the the format of the lodlib here you know means i can shift to different page layouts
35:39you know from one section to another so this is a tabloid landscape layout this is a page that's
35:4617 by 11 or yeah and uh so it allows for quite a bit of information and complex relationships to
35:55be
35:55mapped out you'll see here in the reconstruction i've also put tags the tags represent different
36:01things different symbols for the tags different voices basically and tagging signals to represent
36:08different voices and then some of these tags even are comparative so this is basically a proximity
36:15tag so basically these tags can be harvested very quickly through machine applications so i've
36:24turned the whole writing process both into like creating a a novel massive hypothesis or synopsis
36:30gospel synopsis but more focused on historical voices and then allowed myself to tag the work as i go
36:39as well as traditional you know footnotes but even these i use as an opportunity to unpack you know not
36:47just traditional you know patristic evidence or manuscript evidence but also uh vocal signal evidence
36:55characteristic features of different voices so i try to build some of the scientific proofs let's go to the
37:01end of the book so these are the main reconstructions that's over 500 pages of contents a lot of content
37:10scrolling through still working on this it's it's now up to 470 000 words i'm anticipating when this
37:18is done it will be in the neighborhood of a million words it may take me another year or so
37:23to finish this
37:24up and what i'm hoping to me this is very much a prototype it's it's a book it's a book
37:30that you
37:30can use today it doesn't have everything it's not totally complete but tons of really potentially
37:37very important information in here great content um but what i'd really love to see is for this to
37:42become a group project you know maybe under westar or a group of scholars who basically buy the
37:50hypotheses that i've published and want to create a version of gospel marcion cue and a solution to
37:57the synoptic problem that's very much a consensus building process this might remind you of stanley
38:03porter's research basically i'm here i'm separating out voices of vocal strata but basically i have an
38:10internal data dictionary or lexicon that counts up uh the occurrences of a given word or a given
38:19word form or a given syntagmata or bigrams trigrams within the text same thing with different grammatical
38:30features same thing with scripture references same things with topics or themes right again the whole
38:36goal is to separate out voices this is a section on the gospel of marcion uh the major editions of
38:43it
38:43and what the major editors of them have found um verse counts word counts so this is massively open
38:53radically open data right i'm i'm putting all the cards on the table you know what have i found in
39:00my
39:00research then we have uh data visualizations of these are of the major restorations of the gospel of
39:07marcion so i'm showing how they're related over time and to each other uh we come next these are
39:14some of my older proofs um here are data papers and then data sets that i've created based on
39:21editions of the gospel of marcion so most of these are now peer-reviewed and published
39:26or about to be published through the journal of open humanities data but this was essentially my initial
39:32place where i staged this harnax reconstruction here roth's was also i've got copyright permission from
39:40roth and brill to archive these transformative open data sets um these this is signals from luke
39:49morphologically tagged text from luke that i think is the voice of the redactor luke i have code here
39:56uh r scripts that you can use in r um to facilitate computational linguistics analysis for people who
40:04don't read greek um loading code for uh data sets here's a translation of the first gospel as i've
40:14started to reconstruct it um here's a critical edition of the gospel of marcion including its sources
40:21early mark and q or the new q as i've reconstructed it along with page references to major editions and
40:29citations and tertullians against marcion so you know again all of most of these things are not
40:36totally complete uh their works in process but lots of good information list of the critical works
40:41of tertullian a list of all the times epiphanius refers to the gospel marcion
40:47uh then we have some proposals at the end um a few creative writings my own poems there's a particular
40:56author he's a holocaust survivor named raymond fetterman who used to do the most creative things
41:01with text on a page um in his books and he was a good friend of my dad's and he
41:06gave me his books and
41:07they uh they influenced me in terms of thinking about very creative ways of representing information
41:15so uh that's the tour of the book now i'm going to upload this to show you how the lodlib

41:21process works so i'm on the zenodo platform um this is the last version i uploaded so what i'm going
41:28to
41:28do is upload a new version of this book dated today i just saved it right before this presentation
41:35so you know i already have an account in zenodo it's connected to my orchid account
41:40this is not going to permanently delete the last version it's just going to delete it

43:05of congress subject headings so those will persist even through the updates
43:12um so you know using my library skills as well as my author skills to create a really easily findable
43:19a meaningfully connected um knowledge product so i've saved it and now i'm going to publish it
43:29and you'll see it's pretty quick zanodo as a platform you know it's a 44 meg file zanodo deals with
43:36you know gigabytes and terabytes of data all day so they they can manage uh you know
43:44an upload that's 44 megabytes so it's going to take a little bit but okay it's done so now the
43:49new
43:49version is uploaded um you'll see it's listed here it's version 2.16 now i'm going to go back to
43:56version
43:562.15 and 2.14 and with 2.15 i'm going to edit this you'll see it already says there's
44:07a newer version
44:08available right so it already all these records are connected

45:07open to a restricted access version because now this is not the latest file so my latest file is always
45:15going to be open completely open but my penultimate file will be slightly restricted in terms of
45:22access again that just takes a little bit of time and now you'll see it's restricted so if we go

45:36and each one of these actually you can get analytics on it's it's kind of cool to see how many

45:41are reading the book you know from a week to week so version 2.15 i have 63 views and

45:51in a week and a half or something like that so it's a good way of just seeing you know
45:55how what interest
45:56in the book and how there is and how it's varying and you know uh so it's not the level
46:02of analytics you
46:03from like google analytics or google tag manager but it gives you some decent analytics um and then
46:09certainly other systems can pick up on this too because of the use of dois so you know as this
46:14as the core doi is cited um repeatedly then like google scholar would be able to track the citations
46:23so i've already gone too long but thank you again for your patience and indulgence i hope you found this

46:58about kind of the radical democratization of publishing because truth does not abide in publishers
47:06truth is self-evident and uh people who seek after truth scientific truth um can share their hypotheses and
47:16share their proofs openly in this kind of spirit of radical freedom and let it be reviewed
47:22um so and experiment in creative ways with this so i hope this talk has been uh inspirational
