00:02Authorities launched a major crackdown on illegal water and electricity connections at two squatter settlements on Tuesday,
00:09amid concerns that water theft was worsening supply losses and reducing water pressure for legitimate consumers.
00:16One person was arrested, 43 illegal water connections were disconnected,
00:21and two water pumps seized during the operation at Kampung Mangkalinao, Mile 3.
00:27Led by the Sabah Water Department, the operation also uncovered and cut 40 illegal electricity connections.
00:35Sabah Water Department Enforcement and Security Branch Head Azmi Subli said the operation targeted squatter settlements
00:42believed to be contributing to Sandakan's non-revenue water problem.
00:46He said the illegal connections not only resulted in water losses,
00:50but also reduced water pressure and disrupted supply to registered consumers.
00:55The suspect was arrested and investigations are being conducted under Section 49 Subsection B
01:02of the Sabah Water Supply Enactment 2003.
01:06The operation, which ran from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.,
01:10involved 89 personnel from 18 federal and state enforcement agencies.
01:16Sabah Electricity also removed about 82 kilograms of electrical cables used for illegal power connections,
01:23while the Sandakan Municipal Council issued three compounds and seized 11 packets of contraband cigarettes.
