France and Spain battle to control wildfires ahead of expected heatwave

EU officials have warned that "extreme conditions" are looming across parts of Europe, with the wildfire situation expected to worsen in France, Spain and Portugal.

00:02Firefighters in Spain and France are working around the clock before another heatwave approaches.
00:07The huge fire near Bordeaux in the southwestern region of Gironde,
00:11which has forced hundreds of thousands of people to evacuate,
00:14remains stable Tuesday morning.
00:16But with soaring temperatures incoming in combination with the ocean breeze,
00:20officials warned that the blaze could reignite.
00:24French President Emmanuel Macron said the second major fire in the Londres region
00:28further south was contained but also remained a threat.
00:34Firefighters in Spain also experienced a quieter night battling wildfires west of Madrid.
00:39But similarly here, the coming hours will be decisive as temperatures begin to rise again.
00:44In total, more than 300,000 people have been forced to flee their homes in the two countries,
00:50making it one of Europe's largest evacuation operations in decades.
00:56Meanwhile, in Portugal, several fires broke out in the north and the centre of the country.
01:01Over a thousand firefighters are tackling the blazes.
01:05The European Union has activated its emergency response system to support France and Spain.
01:11But with extreme conditions looming in other countries across Europe,
