00:05good morning welcome you must be here for the interview yes I am John Williams I have a 10
00:13o'clock with Logan Harris perfect let me let him know you're here make yourself comfortable okay
00:22okay he's here thanks he'll be right with you are you the candidate John Williams it's nice to meet
00:37you I I was expecting this expecting what exactly well I I didn't know about your
00:47situation my situation well my situation is that I use a wheelchair and I'm here to interview for
00:53a management position that I'm highly qualified for right okay but you you gotta understand you
00:58know this job requires a lot of physical mobility moving around different floors visiting sites
01:04client meetings yeah I'm aware of the job requirements okay well you know what what
01:09if there was an emergency what if the elevators went out how are you gonna navigate that I
01:13understand your concern but those are questions that apply to any employee but you're making
01:18assumptions based on my wheelchair rather than my actual qualifications no no I'm not making
01:23assumptions I'm just being practical excuse me but um our office is fully accessible we have ramps and
01:33elevators and everything you could possibly need um maybe we should focus more on his experience and
01:41qualifications okay all right this really isn't your concern okay look I'm gonna be frank with
01:46you this position involves managing teams attending high-level client meetings you know people have a
01:52certain expectation on what a manager looks like are you suggesting that my wheelchair would prevent me
01:57from managing teams or meetings with clients I'm saying that maybe you'd be more comfortable in a
02:01different role you know something more desk based what's client facing I didn't apply for a different role I
02:08applied for this one and I have a right I have eight years of management experience right right
02:13experience on paper is different from real-world reality look you understand what I'm saying I
02:18understand exactly what you're saying good this doesn't seem right you're dismissing mr. Williams without
02:32reviewing his qualifications properly Mariah you to stay out of this okay this is a hiring decision you
02:42know maybe we should just end the interview now you know save us both some time I'd like to speak
02:46with
02:46your supervisor my supervisor you want to complain to my supervisor I want to speak with someone who will
02:53conduct this interview fairly yes fine I'll call Meryl she can explain the same thing I just did
03:05yeah Meryl we're gonna come to your office now we have a little situation with a candidate okay
03:11great we'll be right over come on let's go Meryl
03:25Logan what's going on well this is John Williams the candidate for the management position there are
03:31some concerns about whether he's the right fit need I say more this Meryl it's nice to meet you I'm
03:41hoping we can have a productive conversation about this position let me see your resume yeah sure have it
03:56right here where'd you go to school I have an MBA from State University it's a well respected program
04:02hmm we typically prefer candidates for more prestigious institutions for our management positions Harvard
04:10Stanford Yale right well State University has an excellent business program I graduated at the top
04:16of my class I'm sure you did well tell me about your previous management experience sure I worked at a
04:24fortune 500 company where I led a team of 15 people during my tenure and I increased operational
04:29efficiency by 30 percent and and were you the only manager at that company who looked like you excuse me
04:35and were you some part of the kind of diversity initiative a quota system perhaps I was hired
04:41because of my qualifications of course but companies have diversity goals these days and sometimes that
04:48influences hiring decisions I'm just asking if that played a role my race has nothing to do with my
04:53professional capabilities or achievements look there are just a lot of factors here that make this not
05:00the right fit for our company and what factors are those exactly I mean we need to consider the
05:05overall picture culture fit presentation how you'll represent the company I can't listen to
05:12this anymore what you're both doing is wrong Mariah please just no I won't you need to actually listen to
05:20Mr.
05:21Williams qualifications his skills his experience not his wheelchair not his race okay this is not your place
05:29your receptionist act like one it is my place when I witness discrimination happening right in front of
05:37my face fine we'll hear what he has to say thank you I appreciate that as I was saying my
05:46management
05:47philosophy centers on okay how are you going to command respect when you can't even stand up during
05:52presentations when you're sitting down while everyone else is standing my leadership doesn't come from my
05:58physical position in a room it comes from my skills and experience we need someone who can represent
06:04this company at high-level meetings we have to consider how clients will perceive our management
06:10team what you're describing is discrimination pure and simple we're not discriminating we're evaluating
06:16practical concerns and culture fit exactly this is not personal no this is absolutely personal when you
06:21judge me based on factors that have nothing to do with my ability to do the job you both are
06:26making excuses for
06:27being prejudice and it's shameful Mariah you're out of line okay you're defending him because he's your
06:35people but no no no no no no no no you did it you're out of line both of you
06:42my people I can't work for a
06:46company that treats anyone this way regardless of their race you know what I'm done here okay you're gonna
06:52throw your job away over nothing over someone you don't even know it's not nothing Logan it's everything
07:00it's about basic human decency okay all right Mariah stop you're not going anywhere okay really dude that's not
07:12really your decision to make now is it actually it is my decision is this is this some kind of
07:27joke
07:27you're the CEO it's not a joke I came in undercover to test your hiring practices after receiving multiple
07:34complaints about discrimination in this department that's you can't do that yes I can I just did and you
07:41both failed miserably okay look there's been a misunderstanding we were just being thorough in our
07:45evaluation I heard exactly what you said Logan blatant ableism questioning whether I could command
07:51respect because of my wheelchair suggesting I'd be better in a less visible role and you questioned
07:57whether I earned my position or was just a diversity hire that's explicit racial discrimination
08:02I was just asking questions about your background you were questioning my competence based on my race
08:07there's no other interpretation okay mr. Williams please we deserve a chance to make this right your
08:14discrimination doesn't get second chances your employment is terminated effective immediately both
08:18of you get your stuff get out you can't fire us if you do we'll file wrongful termination suits
08:23I recorded this entire interaction on my phone the audio is clear you're both on record making
08:28discriminatory statements if you fire us this could hurt the company's reputation people will talk
08:35no what hurts the company's reputation is having discriminatory hiring managers who reject qualified
08:40candidates that is what damages our reputation okay sorry this is unfair we were doing our jobs your
08:48job is not to discriminate your job is to hire the best candidates regardless of their physical abilities or
08:53race we have families bills to pay so do the qualified candidates you rejected because of your prejudices
08:59collect your belongings and leave within the hour security will escort you out if necessary
09:03oh this is unfair what's unfair is you rejecting qualified candidates because they use wheelchairs or
09:08because the color of your skin that is unfair you'll regret this don't think i will
09:22thank you for speaking up oh well i couldn't just stand there and listen to that well most people
09:29wouldn't have risked their jobs to defend someone they just met that takes courage well it was simply
09:35the right thing to do it was and because of that i'm promoting you effective immediately to interim
09:41director of human resources with a significant raise what but i don't have hr experience you don't need it
09:50you just demonstrated better judgment about fair hiring practices than anyone currently in that department
09:55you showed integrity and integrity can't be taught oh are you serious that serious wow i need people
10:04who will stand up against discrimination even when it's hard even when it puts their job at risk yes
10:11absolutely yes i will do it thank you
10:18mariah i expect you to hold everyone to the same standard you held logan and meryl to today
10:23including me oh i will and that's a promise
10:34good morning i'm mariah thompson i'm here for the hotel manager interview right uh take a seat over there
10:48uh good morning mr daniel lewis martinez thank you for this opportunity yeah
10:54sit down we'll get to you when we get to you
11:02um is it me or is this completely unprofessional trust me you're not imagining it
11:11i'm here for the manager position i assume you've been expecting me
11:17vanessa what a pleasure please please come in it's a beautiful chanel suit if i'm not mistaken
11:25well yes it is you have excellent taste my personal shopper picked it up for me in paris last month
11:32paris how wonderful and that necklace absolutely stunning oh my god thank you it's been in my
11:41family for generations we own several properties in the hospitality industry you know my father has
11:49connections with major hotel chains all across the country really which chains i'd love to hear more
11:57about your family's business empire well my father owns the grandview resort chain and we have
12:05partnerships with luxury suites international i'm used to the finer things obviously and i understand
12:12what wealthy guests expect that's exactly what i needed to hear someone who understands our clientele
12:21someone with the right background and proper connections excuse me but when we'll be discussing
12:27the actual interview process and timeline you will have to wait your turn can't you see i'm speaking
12:32with a qualified candidate i'd also like to mention my experience managing the downtown marion for the past
12:38five years i have excellent references look the position requires someone with the right background
12:44the proper connections in this industry not everyone is cut out for this level of responsibility
12:52i think we should start with your interview first since you're clearly the most qualified candidate
12:57here oh my god that sounds perfect i had a feeling that this would go so smoothly right this way
13:04i'm very impressed about your family's credentials
13:24did that really just happen he's more interested in her jewelry than anyone's actual qualifications
13:30what do you think about his behavior have you experienced this kind of bias before
13:35unfortunately yes but never this blatant he didn't even look at my resume just dismissed us both the
13:42moment he saw her designer clothes how do you typically handle situations like this honestly i usually just
13:49walk away i mean it's clear he's already made up his mind based on our family's money why waste our
13:54time
13:54maybe you should stay sometimes things aren't what they seem sometimes situations can change
14:00unexpectedly change did you see how he was practically bowing to her i mean the interview is just a
14:08formality at this point trust me on this i have reasons to believe the right person would ultimately get
14:14this job what reasons you seem awfully confident for someone who just got dismissed as unqualified let's just say i
14:24have faith that justice will prevail sometimes the most unexpected things happen
14:33well that went even better than i expected
14:36i've essentially been offered the position just a few more formalities to complete
14:41formalities the interview lasted less than 10 minutes
14:45well when you have the right background and connections things move quickly
14:49my family's business relationships really impressed him
14:53mrs vanessa is definitely our front runner and the remaining interviews are mostly procedural at this
14:59point i'm really sorry that you two came all this way for nothing but some positions require a certain
15:06pedigree we'll see about that mariah thompson you're next let's get this over with
15:15actually let's take our time with this one
15:32look i'm gonna be honest with you the position's already been filmed
15:37i'm only doing this to complete the process so let's keep it brief
15:41i appreciate receiving a proper interview i have extensive qualifications and experience in hotel
15:47management that i like to discuss your experience is irrelevant compared to what miss vanessa brings to
15:53the table she has family connections financial backings and the right social standing shouldn't hotel
15:59management be based on professional competency leadership skills and industry knowledge rather than personal
16:05well i don't understand how the hospitality business works successful hotels need managers with powerful
16:12connections and financial resources let me ask you about some specific scenarios if you had a major
16:19guest complain about service quality how would you expect your manager to handle it look these are
16:24theoretical questions that don't matter what matters is having the right background what about staff
16:31scheduling conflicts during peak season how important is experience with workforce management are we
16:36almost done here i have things to do what specific hotel management qualifications does vanessa possess that
16:43makes her superior to other candidates she has connections money influence that is what business is about
16:51and professional experience leadership skills customer service expertise
16:56this interview is over you failed to meet the position requirements your background isn't even suitable
17:03enough for this level of responsibility can you clarify exactly what those requirements are
17:08in writing i don't need to clarify anything my decision is final let's go
17:22i made my decision vanessa the position is yours with your family connections and background you're a clear choice for
17:32the job
17:33you knew it thank you so much congratulations i can't wait to start implementing all sorts of changes around here
17:41this is unbelievable you're making this decision based purely on wealth not qualification i'm making this decision
17:49based on what's best for the business vanessa understands our clientele yeah she understands spending
17:55money not making it through good management some people just don't understand how the business world works
18:02connections matter influence matters i suggest you both accept the decision and leave
18:09i won't tolerate any more of your challenges to my authority your authority this isn't authority it's
18:15discrimination you're hiring based on financial background not merit that's enough security can escort
18:23you out if necessary this is unethical and potentially illegal i mean qualified candidates deserve a fair
18:31consideration regardless of their bank account qualified you're both delusional if you think you could
18:38compete with my credentials actually i think there's been a misunderstanding what kind of misunderstanding
18:46i'm mariah thompson ceo of this hotel chain i've been conducting an undercover evaluation of your hiring
18:54practices ceo no that's impossible you're just a job candidate there's no way i'm the ceo and i'm appalled
19:04by what i've witnessed today you violated every principle of fair hiring practices wait you're the ceo but
19:15but i thought this this has to be some mistake miss thompson i can explain i was just trying to
19:21find the
19:22best fit for the company culture yeah the best fit you dismiss qualified candidates based solely on their
19:30appearance and financial status that's not what happened i was considering all factors including business
19:36connection to help you never looked at anyone's qualifications except vanessa's family's money that's not just
19:44unprofessional it's discriminatory miss thompson i apologize if there was any misunderstanding i certainly didn't mean to
19:52be disrespectful to any of my future colleagues future colleagues miss vanessa you demonstrated an
19:59entitled attitude and showed no genuine qualifications for hotel management you won't be receiving this
20:05position but daniel already offered me the job you can't just take it back i didn't recognize you
20:12i can and i will this position requires professional competency not family connections please miss thompson
20:21i made a mistake i can learn from this give me another chance daniel you're terminated effective
20:28immediately your bias towards wealthy candidates violates company policies and professional standards
20:35you can't fire me i've been with this company for three years that is totally unfair what's unfair
20:43is dismissing qualified candidates because they don't wear designer clothes this is your fault you said
20:50the job was mine you said my connections were everything you're the one who came in here acting
20:55like you owned the place mrs thompson i apologize you're both responsible for your own behavior
21:01i suggest you leave before i call security this isn't over
21:09oh my dad's gonna be so mad at me
21:14did you see this email up about this meeting some consultant wants to pitch us on inclusive fashion
21:20trends oh god here we go again with another diversity lecture oh god i swear if they try to tell
21:28us we need to
21:29put plus size models in our covers oh my god please tell me that's not the fashion consultant
21:41i mean he's wearing a hoodie did he get dressed in the dark i'm gonna like gave up entirely
21:47all right hi i'm frank this is john here we're here to discuss the potential partnership regarding
21:54consultation services melissa senior advisor helen i work with melissa john is an expert here on
22:02inclusive fashion trends we believe he can help expand your magazine's demographic reach and market
22:06share uh look i'll be honest our magazine has a specific aesthetic a brand image we've spent years
22:12cultivating we cater to a certain clientele and we expect a particular standard well that's exactly why
22:20you need my perspective the market is changing i mean we couldn't possibly work with someone who
22:25doesn't embody our brand's values but the data shows you seriously suggesting we take fashion advice
22:31from you when you can't even dress yourself properly fashion is about aspiration beauty our readers
22:40don't want to see people who look like they've given up on themselves everyone associated with this
22:47magazine must meet certain beauty standards which you simply don't i have 15 years of experience in
22:54this industry experience doesn't matter if you can walk the walk how can you consult on fashion when
22:59you look like that i think we should leave okay this isn't gonna work out i'm sorry i shouldn't have
23:05come
23:05hey don't apologize john i need to speak with john privately before we continue sure maybe you can find a
23:14magazine more suited for his particular style
23:33i knew this was a bad idea i told you people in fashion would react this way john they've judged
23:39me
23:39my entire career based on appearance instead of expertise that's exactly why i hesitated to come
23:44today you have nothing to apologize for i wasted your time no you didn't all right the problem isn't you
23:51john it's their narrow-minded attitude and completely outdated values you led the campaign that increased
23:56sales for riverside brands by only 40 percent okay your market research showed massive demand for body
24:02inclusive content three major retailers thrive by listening to your advice they don't care about any of
24:09that you're right they don't and that's exactly what makes you uniquely qualified to help this
24:15industry evolve all right people like melissa and helen represent everything wrong with fashion right now
24:22if we leave they win nothing changes but if we stay and confront this attitude we can make a real
24:27difference you really think so oh yeah i've heard complaints about this office culture before
24:33whispers about body shaming toxic attitude that's partly why i wanted you to come in today to see if
24:39those rumors were true i'm just i'm tired of running away from people like them and don't i'm tired of
24:46letting their judgment make me feel less than you're gonna go back in there and you're gonna speak your
24:52truth about why inclusive fashion matters i'll be right there supporting you thank you for seeing my value
24:57when they couldn't let's go
25:04no i need one scarf from chanel two shoes from fenty and then three skirts from gurbana don't ask what
25:11skirts just skirts
25:14bye
25:17back for round two
25:20oh did you need a pep talk about your feelings john
25:24maybe you should try consulting for a plus size brand instead
25:28lane bryant might be hiring i want to explain why your attitude is harmful to the fashion industry's
25:34future oh here we go beauty standards have evolved okay 67 of american women wear a size 14 or above
25:40the market for inclusive sizing grew by 24 last year alone major brands like universal standard and savage
25:47x fenty embraced inclusive sizing and saw profit increases to of 30 to 40 percent fashion should
25:54be about self-expression for everyone not exclusion are you seriously trying to lecture us about fashion
26:01your little speech is about acceptance and that's adorable but you're being naive okay this is high
26:08fashion fashion has always been aspirational about showcasing beauty and perfection not making
26:14everyone comfortable about letting themselves go some people don't have the discipline to maintain
26:19themselves and they shouldn't expect the industry to lower its standards to accommodate them
26:24studies show that consumers respond more positively to diverse representation okay i'm
26:30tired of this conversation why would you even bring someone like him here frank it's embarrassing
26:35unprofessional honestly your judgment should be questioned if you think john is qualified for
26:40anything in fashion we're wasting time this is getting too awkward i think we should we should
26:46end this meeting agreed are you quite finished excuse me i haven't properly introduced myself i'm frank morrison
26:54ceo of morrison media group the parent company that owns this magazine and 12 others in our fashion
26:59publication portfolio what i've been conducting undercover assessments of our publications after receiving
27:04complaints about toxic workplace culture specifically body shaming and discrimination i asked john to
27:11come today because i had a feeling based on multiple reports about exactly how you would react to him
27:16but mr morrison i yeah your behavior confirmed every single complaint you judged john solely on his
27:22appearance you refuse to consider his qualifications or expertise you demonstrated harmful attitudes that have no
27:28place in my company i run understand i mean i i didn't mean how it sounded yeah we were just
27:33being
27:33honest about market realities the fashion industry is under so much pressure these days maintain
27:38standards it's cutthroat like maybe we were maybe we're too harsh but it comes from passion for our work
27:46pressure doesn't excuse discrimination or cruelty you weren't just unprofessional you revealed the
27:51fundamental lack of understanding about where fashion is heading and the value this company stands for
27:56body inclusivity isn't just morally right it's good business your refusal to see that combined
28:01with your cruel treatment of john shows you're not fit to represent my public vacation i need this job
28:06please i mean we can change we'll do better i mean everybody makes mistakes your employment is
28:12terminated effective immediately no multiple complaints had already been documented today was
28:17your chance to prove those complaints wrong instead you doubled down you validated every single concern
28:21this isn't fair i bet collect your belongings and leave the building hr will be in touch about
28:27your final paperwork this is entrapment yeah you set us up simply gave you an opportunity to show your
28:32character you chose how to behave you ruined our lives you ruined your own lives with your choices
28:38john had nothing to do with it
28:48john i'd like to formally offer you a position a position that's right diversity and inclusion manager
28:54for this magazine effective immediately you'll have full authority to reshape our content strategy
28:59hiring practices and brand image to reflect truly inclusive values i i don't know what to say say yes
29:07all right this office needs someone who understands exclusion all right someone who has a position
29:12and expertise to create real change that's you yeah yes i accept thank you for believing in me and
29:20what no one else did you always been qualified john all right now you have the platform you deserve
29:27i won't let you down better not
