00:00Why Antarctica's ice gains don't disprove climate change.
00:04Antarctica can gain ice in one place and still be in trouble.
00:09That is the part viral climate headlines usually skip.
00:13First there are two different ice stories.
00:15Sea ice forms from frozen ocean water around Antarctica.
00:20It grows and shrinks every year with the seasons.
00:23The ice sheet is the massive land ice sitting on the continent.
00:26When that land ice melts or slides into the ocean it raises sea level.
00:32So when someone says Antarctic ice is growing the first question should be which ice?
00:39Recent research has found that Antarctica gained some ice sheet mass after 2020.
00:44Largely because unusual snowfall added weight in parts of East Antarctica.
00:49But scientists describe that as a short-term shift.
00:53Not proof that long-term warming was overestimated.
00:56At the same time Antarctic sea ice has recently been near historic lows.
01:01With NASA and NSIDC reporting weak winter growth and record or near record low extents in recent years.
01:08That is why one good year, one region or one measurement cannot cancel the larger picture.
01:17Antarctica is complicated.
01:19More snow can add mass.
01:22Warmer oceans can melt ice shelves from below.
01:26Sea ice can swing wildly year to year.
01:30And West Antarctica remains one of the biggest long-term sea level concerns on Earth.
01:35The honest headline is not that climate change was wrong.
01:39It is that Antarctica is changing in messy, uneven ways that still matter.
01:45how the last appear future data have passed on Earth,
01:45Well, I'll live there for you,
