00:00:12titans and it's coming up next well it may be a bit soggy but that certainly hasn't deterred this
00:00:30fan base a great crowd on hand to battle the raindrops at nissan stadium in nashville
00:00:35the whole of downtown nashville likely still reverberating with the sounds of the titans
00:00:40taking the field a moment ago they're ready for football as their titans are set to match up
00:00:46with the kansas city chiefs
00:00:55welcome again everybody with charles davis i'm brandon gunn and yes the rain is falling now and
00:01:01it is supposed to continue to fall throughout this game so how do you think that will impact this
00:01:05contest well first and foremost both quarterbacks are going to make sure the officials have those
00:01:10dry footballs coming in each and every play and standing over them sometimes with a towel before
00:01:15the center gets up there to snap it second thing is the focus of all the guys who handle the
00:01:20football
00:01:20do they wear gloves do they take them off will they carry the ball high and tight to make sure
00:01:25they have good ball security that's paramount in a game like this
00:01:35so
00:01:42so
00:02:43Simply put, for many, he's a gold standard for quarterbacks in today's NFL because of his ability to create, find
00:02:50the open man, use all the different arm angles that he has.
00:02:54He's a complete package, and boy, his team loves to play around him.
00:03:01Fights loose, and he'll get this up over the 25 to the 26.
00:03:07Nine yards is the pick up there, and they'll have a second and one.
00:03:11The success there, Charles coming on the outside of the field, the ground game, curious to see if that continues
00:03:15as we progress.
00:03:16Yeah, we often talk about a variety in play calling and usually between run and pass, but in this case,
00:03:22with strictly the run game, you can be creative there as well.
00:03:25Run it inside, run it outside, keep the defense off balance.
00:03:29And this carry now is for deep to be swallowed up at the line of scrimmage.
00:03:34No gain on the play, and now they're faced with a third and one.
00:03:39As usual, the hallmark of a good run defense, linebackers making plays near the line of scrimmage.
00:03:44Absolutely nowhere to run there.
00:03:46They'll just play number three here on the opening drive, and it's an early third and one.
00:03:51Edwards-Alaire, they'll try to run for it.
00:03:54Oh, and Edwards-Alaire, I don't think he got there.
00:03:57He did not, they'll stop him short.
00:03:59Nothing doing on second and third down after that nine-yard gain on first.
00:04:04Strong start by this defense, third and short, they go with a run, Stonewall for no gain.
00:04:09I played for a guy who always talked about setting tones and meeting force with force.
00:04:14That felt like it on that play, didn't it?
00:04:17And they met it in a big way and won.
00:04:19What a great job by the defense.
00:04:21On fourth down, Tommy Townsend to punt for Kansas City.
00:04:27And now a low liner, I think he mishit it.
00:04:30Fair catch called for, no gimme in these conditions, but he's able to look this one in.
00:04:34Here comes the Tennessee offense, and you see Ryan Tannehill leading them out.
00:04:39And one of the things that has really impressed me about Ryan Tannehill has been his perseverance.
00:04:44Early in his career, didn't have the success that he desired.
00:04:48Had some injuries that slowed his development, but he kept working at his craft.
00:04:52And now, he's a guy that I think you can put a game on his shoulders.
00:04:59Now a first carry for Derrick Henry.
00:05:01And he'll take it across the 50 and into Chief Territory.
00:05:06Seven yards on the pick up there, and it'll leave him with a second and three.
00:05:10A nice run here early on.
00:05:12It doesn't take a great play call to realize.
00:05:13You want to establish a guy of his caliber who runs like this early,
00:05:16because they'll pay dividends as the game progresses.
00:05:19So they'll come up after the gain of seven on a second and three.
00:05:26Tannehill going to turn and give this to Henry.
00:05:28And he'll get this down only to about the 46.
00:05:31They got two of the three they needed there.
00:05:33Leaves them with third in just a yard.
00:05:36Ladies and gentlemen, that is a force of nature.
00:05:39At the defensive tackle position.
00:05:41Yes, he's as big as they come, but still plenty agile.
00:05:43He's able to make a nice play there to swallow up the ball carrier.

00:06:15It'll be out of bounds, incomplete.
00:06:18A deep ball down that right sideline,
00:06:20and he made sure that he put it where either his guy was going to catch it

00:06:45They'll stay put on fourth and one.

00:06:51Fighting through, and he's got space.
00:06:53But he gets us from inside the 15,
00:06:56just a yard or two shy of the 10.
00:06:59It's a big play there on fourth down.
00:07:02Well, that is a running back who is not about to go down easily.
00:07:05He fought his way through the contact until the seas opened up for him.
00:07:09And with a guy his size, you have to know defensively
00:07:11that arm tackles aren't going to fly with him.
00:07:14You have to be able to wrap up,
00:07:15or else he can just brush tacklers aside like they're not even there.
00:07:19And you can see the distance traveled there after the initial contact on the next-gen stats.
00:07:24So how about this for field position after the big play?
00:07:27Inside the 15 now as they come up on first and 10.
00:07:34And they'll try the jet sweep here.
00:07:36And he'll take this one inside the 10 down to the 8.

00:07:45All-level guys on defense diagnosing the jet sweep and putting it down.

00:08:25He is a huge human being and a lot faster than what people know.
00:08:30When he gets rolling, he's a lot to bring down.
00:08:33It's a loss of a yard there.

00:08:36When a draw works, it can be a thing of beauty.
00:08:39But when it doesn't, oh, it can be ugly.
00:08:41And in this case, loss of yardage ugly.

00:12:52And tried to work his way open.
00:12:54He was able to make the catch.
00:12:56But the defenders were there.

00:13:05And down he goes, taking it inside the ten, just shy of the five at the six.
00:13:11Boy, how about the speed with which this offense can get down the field.
00:13:14It's taking them no time at all to get down here.

00:14:46And the Chiefs are an extra point away from tying up this football game.
00:14:51You get down near the goal line.
00:14:53This is where having a sure-handed tight end becomes a luxury.
00:14:55And it pays off big time,
00:14:57especially when the defense sells out against the run.
00:14:59And he finds himself open for an easy touchdown.
00:15:03Harrison Bunker is on for the extra point.
00:15:10It's up and good.
00:15:11And we're tied at seven here in quarter number two.
00:15:16So that one at eight-play drive.
00:15:18It spans 75 yards.
00:15:20And it winds up with the Chiefs hitting Pater.
00:15:47So I'll leave it at seven now as they kick it away.
00:15:54From a yard or two deep, here comes a return.
00:15:57And a nice job there on special teams.
00:16:00Deliver him to inside the 15 as he's dropped at the 14.
00:16:06The Titans coming back onto the field for their second drive.
00:16:09And they're hoping to redo their efforts in the last drive
00:16:11when they got into the end zone.
00:16:12And just think of what it's like now on the sideline.
00:16:15Because when you score a touchdown,
00:16:16you have to go over and look at the tablet
00:16:17and see what you did on the last drive.
00:16:19When you scored points,
00:16:21it's a whole lot better view
00:16:22than when you're trying to figure out how to fix things there.
00:16:26And that one off the mark behind him.
00:16:29Incomplete.
00:16:29I know coaches tell us all the time that having a powerful arm
00:16:32isn't the number one thing they look for in a quarterback.
00:16:34But when you're trying to throw inside routes
00:16:37and you need to put some heat on it,
00:16:39it helps to have the big gun.
00:16:40In this case, just a little bit too much.
00:16:43Second and ten.
00:16:51Again to Henry.
00:16:54And he'll use his blockers to get this up over the 20 to the 21.
00:16:5959 yards rushing for him now in the ballgame.
00:17:02That was a really nice run there to bring up third and short.
00:17:05After the incompletion on first down,
00:17:07it's awfully nice to have a running back that you can hand it to
00:17:09and put you back in a good situation.
00:17:15Now a play fake, and it's Tannehill.
00:17:18He sets to fire deep.
00:17:20And it's incomplete.
00:17:22Took a shot, couldn't connect.
00:17:25And this is what you want to see from a defense.
00:17:27Give up an opening drive touchdown?
00:17:29That's fine.
00:17:30But how about them going back out there,
00:17:32recommitting themselves to the task at hand,
00:17:34and forcing a three and out,
00:17:36and giving the ball back to their offense?
00:17:38On fourth down, here's Brett Kern to punt the football away.

00:17:48a step or two inside the 45-yard line.
00:17:51It's just a 30-yard punt that time, no return.
00:17:54And it's Chiefs football, first and ten.
00:17:57And Kansas City's offense now set, ready to go.
00:18:01The last possession, these guys were able to tie the game with a touchdown,
00:18:04and now they'll have a chance to move out in front.
00:18:06Yeah, let's give a big assist to the defense.

00:18:09The special teams went out there, handled things.
00:18:11They've got it.
00:18:12They've got momentum.
00:18:13I know they're eager to get out there and put it on display.
00:18:16Yeah, he's got to be out of bounds,
00:18:17but not before he takes it inside the 40.
00:18:20And this was a nice example of an offensive coordinator scheming his guy open.
00:18:25Just a little underneath route, just trying to free up some space.
00:18:28And it worked awfully well.
00:18:30Got him not just space,
00:18:31but plenty of room to run after the catch to pick up really nice yardage.
00:18:40So from the 39 now, they'll come up on a first and ten.

00:18:52This would complete to me, Cole Hardman.
00:18:55Five yards on the catch there, brings up second down.
00:18:59That next teammate used to tell me all the time,
00:19:01I hate experienced quarterbacks,
00:19:03because no matter what, you really can't hide what you're doing.
00:19:07And I think that right there, he knew right away where the blitz was coming from,
00:19:10where his primary guy was going to be,
00:19:12and he ended up going to a secondary target for a nice game.
00:19:15I was just going to ask you, that wasn't the primary target.
00:19:18He's so good at that, isn't he?
00:19:19I think he knew right away that he wasn't going to get to his primary guy.
00:19:22I think he read that as soon as he got to the line of scrimmage.
00:19:25Knew where the pressure was going to come from.
00:19:27He said, wow, I know how to beat that.
00:19:29And that's what he did.
00:19:32So this will be accepted as it moves the offense backwards.
00:19:40They had a great starting position to begin the drive,
00:19:43but now they look up for the third and five.

00:19:52He wiped those lines, it's intercepted.

00:20:05I'm going to look at this from the defensive perspective.
00:20:07In the rain, you have to be more cautious trying to cover passing routes.
00:20:12Why?
00:20:12The offense knows where they're going with the football.
00:20:14The receiver knows the route he's going to run.
00:20:17You have to make sure you keep your footing underneath you.
00:20:20The Titans offense now, they get ready to do battle again here.
00:20:23And on the last go-around, they really couldn't get anything going.
00:20:27They had to putt from deep inside their own territory,
00:20:29which means you're going to lose the field position battle as a general rule.
00:20:33What they're looking for now is a little more consistency.
00:20:36Move the ball at least a few times on offense.
00:20:38Get a couple of first downs and hopefully flip the field.
00:20:41Yeah, just something to build off of.
00:20:43That's what they're looking for here.
00:20:44That'll give them eight that time.
00:20:46And it'll be second down.
00:20:48Just about every quarterback is trained to really look downfield first
00:20:51before you come back and make a nice, safe throw.
00:20:54And in this case, that's exactly what he did.

00:20:57Let him create some space.
00:20:59And it turned out to be a nice play for the offense.

00:33:35If you can't run with a tight end as a linebacker, this is going to be the result every time.

00:33:52The opening of the second half is better for him than the first half.
00:33:54They've got to find a way to get him going.
