Western Australians urged to register as organ donors as data shows only one third have have signed up

Western Australians are being urged to register as organ donors, after new data from Donate Life shows just over a third of the state are registered.  Across Australia, almost two thousand people are waiting for an organ transplant and families who have received a donation say it's given them a second chance at life.

00:02When Alana Prince's son Jake needed a liver transplant at 13, she waited anxiously for

00:08a phone call that would save his life.

00:11And when that phone call does come, your heart sinks because you know a family are going

00:16through their darkest time and in that darkest time they've made the decision to save someone

00:20else.

00:21This is the greatest gift someone could give, someone's choice to save my life and it's

00:28absolutely inspiring.

00:29Donate Life says almost 2,000 people are waiting for an organ transplant across the

00:35country.

00:35We've got another 14,000 people on dialysis and many of those people on dialysis would

00:41benefit from a kidney transplant so the need for organ transplants is huge.

00:47More than 17,500 people in WA registered to become organ donors last year.

00:53Donate Life says there are still many more who support donation but have not registered.

00:58Make it this weekend that you register for Donate Life because a tragedy can happen at

01:02any time.

01:03And it's so easy.

01:04It takes a minute or two on the Donate Life website or the MyGoVal.

01:08Perth families gathered to raise awareness at the annual Walk for Life including Aurora

01:13Molina and her son Sebastian who received a liver transplant.

01:26Sebastian's parents say they didn't consider organ donation until their son experienced liver

01:31failure.

01:32Raising awareness is very important because you never know if you'll end up in that

01:37situation.

01:38Anyone aged 16 or older with a Medicare card can register as an organ or tissue donor.

01:44And if you lived for a lot of people in the year and it was a little less than $1

01:44,000 or

01:44And then we will be happy to get an example.

01:44All of the people who don't have a better job or do the job or do the job.

01:46In three weeks for someone who has been given a lot of people who are interested in the

01:49background, and I hope we can do that.

01:49And that's something that gives you a little bit of food.

01:50And I think that leads us to know if you have access.
