00:02You probably know your own and the numbers of your loved ones by heart.
00:06But have you ever wondered what these digits mean?
00:09Plus 11 or plus 2, plus 3, plus 4?
00:12Why are there different numbers in different countries, and who invented them?
00:16Well, let's figure it out.
00:18There's a large worldwide organization called the International Telecommunication Union, or ITU.
00:25It's one of the 15 specialized institutions of the United Nations, which is a global organization that deals with security,
00:32diplomacy between countries around the world, and many other important things.
00:36Among its duties is the establishment of telecommunication links, and this is the area of responsibility of the ITU department.
00:44People in this union assign different codes to countries and coordinate international communication.
00:50They've divided our planet into 9 regions.
00:53Depending on the region, each country has its own prefix, a digit that denotes a country code.
00:59When you type plus on your phone and then the first digit, your phone automatically connects to the phone lines
01:05of the specified region.
01:06The following numbers narrow the radius of this region to one point.
01:10In simple words, first, you select a continent, then a country, then a region in that country, then a cell
01:17tower in a particular city, and finally, the subscriber's registration number.
01:21For example, the countries of the North American numbering plan group have the number plus zero zero.
01:28To call an African region, you need to type plus two and put a specific country code.
01:33The regions with codes 3 and 4 are in Europe, so each number represents its own region.
01:39You can easily find the table with region codes on the internet.
01:43Do you know that people began to widely use wireless communication only in the 90s and 2000s?
01:49Before that, every house had one stationary phone.

03:45In 1995, the number of wireless subscribers was about 35 million people.

05:34To get 0.3 ounces of gold, you need 1 ton of ore or 21 smartphones.
05:40And a whole ton of phones without batteries will give you 10.5 ounces of gold.
05:45People extract about 2,700 tons of gold from ore per year.
05:50That's 7.5 tons per day.
05:52If they started extracting the same amount of gold from smartphones,
05:56the entire population of our planet would run out of phones in 23 days.
06:01Your phone has the Ingress Protection Rating, or IP rating for short.
06:06It shows how waterproof your phone is.
06:08If you have zero, there's no water protection in your device.
06:12If you have nine, then your phone is protected from high pressures and temperatures.
06:17You can find the information in the instructions or on a special website.
06:22Almost 90% of phones in Japan are waterproof because, in this country,
06:27people like to take their phones with them when they take a shower.

06:32Wireless phones made the revolution.

08:53Well, it's not actually a real tree.
08:55More like a solar and storage system in the shape of a tree.
08:58One company from London officially presented it recently, and their goal is to power EV charging stations, where EV stands
09:07for electric vehicles.
09:09Trees here produce clean electricity.
09:12The company has created these solar trees because they wanted to harvest power into an energy storage and management system,
09:20EMS, that AI runs.
09:22That system will both release and regulate all the power, and we'll be able to see the first generation of
09:28these solar trees in early 2023.
09:32I don't know what you think about it, but I can picture one of these in my backyard.
09:37You're chilling, having a cup of coffee hidden under a treetop, and you can charge your laptop or a phone
09:42without having to go inside.
09:44But we probably won't be able to afford it right away.
09:47The company has decided that they want to focus first on rapid electric vehicles, and they say that these trees

10:24So, how do solar trees work in general?
10:28They absorb sunlight with their leaves.
10:30The leaves are photovoltaic, which means they convert light into electricity.
10:36The electricity then goes down through the central pillar that looks like a trunk and ends up in an internal
10:42battery.
10:42Some designs have rotating panels that move throughout the day so the tree can catch more sunlight and, by that,
10:50produce more electricity.
10:53When you build a solar power plant, customers will mostly get a power purchase agreement where it says they can
10:59expect it to last 20 to 25 years.
11:02It doesn't mean your plant will become worthless after that.
11:06In reality, its infrastructure is really stable and panels will probably last 40, maybe even 50 years.
11:13And you can replace them with new modules that will be even more efficient after that, at a relatively low
11:19price.
11:20We need more sources of energy now because there are more and more things we need to charge.

11:29When you first think about it, yeah, it's weird to imagine you have to plug in your football and charge
11:34it like it's a phone.
11:34But, months before the World Cup, we got the news this was really happening.
11:40There will be a match ball with AI sensor technology.

11:48It also collects data and statistics of matches so people can analyze games better.

14:08What's the harm?
14:08Well, it's not an actual myth.
14:11Nothing bad will happen to the software.
14:13But, if you put your phone on low power mode for most of your time, you might have a poorer
14:18user experience since your phone simply gets rid of any extra thing.
14:23Sound won't be as loud as you usually like.
14:25You'll hardly see your screen because of low brightness.
14:28Plus, apps won't check for notifications all the time.
14:31But, approximately every 10 minutes or so.
14:34Low power mode is great if you want to take a break from gadgets though.
14:38My friend told me I shouldn't charge my phone until it reaches zero and turns off.
14:43I had to check that one and, as expected, it's not true.
14:47It's better to charge the lithium-ion battery before your phone runs out of juice.
14:52This type of battery kind of forgets when its maximum capacity level was.
14:57So, when you recharge it, your phone's battery might not recharge to its initial level.
15:02It may lower its capacity because it thinks it's on 100%.
15:07Even one app can take up tons of your battery, sometimes up to 20%.
15:12For example, some social media apps drain up your phone's battery since they're constantly doing things in the background,
15:19even when you're not doing anything there, like checking status updates, messages, and so on.
15:26It's useless to turn off your phone when it comes to saving your battery.
15:30Not true.
15:31Most of us don't fully close apps even after we stop using them.
15:35The more of them are running in the background, the shorter your battery life will be.
15:39So, turn off your phone at least once a week to close them all.
15:43Let's say when you're watching a movie or having a long meeting at work.
15:47That way, you have zero tasks in the background as opposed to those 20 or even more tasks every 10
15:53minutes.
15:55Nothing will happen if you touch your phone while it's plugged in, even though some claim differently.
16:00It's just that it will take longer for a battery to charge, so avoid using it if you don't have
16:05that much time.
16:07Here's one of my favorite myths.
16:09When you lose your charger, save some money and buy an off-brand one.
16:14That could damage the battery of your phone since these chargers might not have the standards in place to fill
16:19the battery with the correct voltage.
16:22No need to hit eject when you're taking your phone out of the computer.
16:26Not.
16:27If you don't hit eject, you could damage your files or keep the phone from finishing backup.
16:34And don't worry if you have Wi-Fi searching on all the time.
16:37It takes some energy, but not that much.
